  • Small on size and price big on sound and features - that´s how I would shortly characterize the incredible Behringer MS-1 analog synthesizer.
    I admit I have neglected my Behringer MS-1 for quite a while often giving preference to my other favorites like Odyssey or Monopoly - shame on me! - but I hope this my new video will help to remedy MS-1 position as one of the best compact fully featured analog monophonic synthesizer especially suitable for funk and other related genres like hip hop, RnB, soul, jazz, disco and more. It´s a remarkable little synth that most anyone can afford even those of us budget minded and if you decide to get one you can rest assured you will be getting a lot for your money. If this would be my only synth for all my synth funk productions I would be certainly thrilled with my choice. I am lucky enough to own several other Behringer synth offerings though so MS-1 is a terrific add on to my existing synth setup. The sound of this gem of a synth is indeed very smooth, warm, organic with a liquidy quality to its genuine analog tone. It comes equipped with a great ARP, a sequencer and even an FM synthesis generator section. Just an excellent complete package for all of us synth funk players. And with such a low asking price what is there to complain about? Go get one, you won´t be sorry that I know for sure.
    The funk factor of MS-1 synth is indeed very high in my book and I hope at least some of you will agree after hearing this demo featuring only the MS-1 bass and lead sounds laid around a simple funk drum groove.
    Feel free to share your thoughts or opinion on this Behringer synth - I would like to know whether you find it as funky as much as I do! :-)
    Have fun everybody and enjoy my demo!

      Thanks so much David! I make all sounds myself - obviously - since none of these true analog synths have a preset memory - but I love creating my own patches - this way you can stay more unique and avoid sounding like someone else if all you are using are premade factory sounds. It´s good to be yourself. And this is what I love about purely analog synthesis not relying on someone else making the sounds for you, it would be just too easy and that is boring I think. There is an endless universe of sounds waiting for you to be explored within an analog synth and it´s always in the hands of a player who gives the machine its very own special vibe and unique character.😎👍❤

      Wow thank you for this your kind comment!! I truly appreciate it👍❤️yes all synths were multitracked, each take/sound was recorded individually and then layered on top of each other and finally mixed. So glad you like it!👍👍👊🤟❤️

    sounds so funky. i just want to play stuff like this and am a total novice. i played 30 years ago as a kid simple stuff. which synth would you reccomend for this stuff/p funk/chic/ type stuff? this or the monologue or the monopoly or the polyd? anything else?

    • @synthsforfunk
      @synthsforfunk  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you I really appreciate your comment here! I do not own any of Korg´s analog offerings so cannot speak on how Monologue is in terms of funkiness so I suggest you check out some sound demos here on youtube to get an idea how this unit sounds. I suppose it´s great at doing your usual analog style bass and lead duties though after hearing some online demos I get an impression it´s pretty capable though not necessarily authentically oldschool sounding. If you prefer more vintage sound character, I would probably grab any of the Begringer units first. My personal favorites are Odyssey and Monopoly by Behringer - both spectacular synths and incredible funky beasts! Especially Monopoly is highly flexible synth - it is able to pull out some excellent sounds including some very convincing Moog-style tones, has an on onboard ARP (can come in handy at times) and has a full size keys which are perfectly playable (unlike the super tiny mini keyboard on Monologue). But mind you it has no patch memory or other modern day features but that is totally fine with me, I prefer things simple and easy and having to always create new and interesting sounds everytime I turn the synth on I see as an advantage instead of a downer as you always end up sounding totally fresh, original and unique (instead of relying on the pre-made factory presets that make you sound like everybody else and that´s no fun to me). This is like real oldschool sound and approach in every possible way - and that´s how I like it folks! Stay funky - stay real! 😎👌👍👍If you stay true to yourself and believe in your creativity your potential, and your ideas, your music will speak for you and music never lies!

      @@synthsforfunk Hi :) I got a moog sub 25. ...now I need to learn how to play it. Can you give me your advice on what type of music theory I should learn that is relevant to playing funk on it? I don't think piano lessons are exactly right since it's a mono synth smaller keyboard right? thanks

    • @synthsforfunk
      @synthsforfunk  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SureFeelsGood Hey there! Sub25 must be a terrific synth I am sure, well I used to own both Litlle Phatty and Grandmother by Moog, unfortunately both units are long gone now as I sold them to fund other stuff. Sure Moog is a legend no doubt but I found my significantly cheaper Behringer vintage synth reisues (Model D, Pro-1, MS-1, Odyssey, Monopoly) made me somehow more happy (not mentioning they have saved me a lot of cash) while giving me the more vintage and raw sound that I seek and prefer for my humble home synth funk productions/synth demo creations. Not sure what advice to give you regarding the learning process though. I am a self-learner :-) so I guess as long as you have a feeling for the music style of your choice and you have the feel for the groove and the funk timing (me being a years long fan and listener of oldschool funk music), I believe you may still with some patience and practice be able to learn yourself and put down some awesome funky grooves even if you have no proper music education or knowledge of music theory - like myself.
      Everything is posisble if you believe in yourself and follow your dream, I am certain you can do it too! My advice is to always stay humble and down to earth, be contantly learning and improving upon yourself and not to pretend to be better than you really are. If you do your thing (music or whatever your passion is) with your heart set on it and even if you make mistakes along the way or the outcome is not always perfect, the love, passion and efforts you put into creating your very own "thing" can then be transferred through your work (be it a piece of music or anything else) onto the people who can feel the emotions, excitement and vibe you
      were feeling when making your "work of art". Music never lies 😎👍❤

    How is the keybed? Eg compared to a fatar feel, are the keys not too loose/light feeling?

    • @synthsforfunk
      @synthsforfunk  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hey Blouies! Great to see you here👍👍😎🤟I can only compare against other Behringer keyboard fitted synths like Monopoly and Odyssey. My feeling is that the keys are not up to the Fatar standard of course (I used to own Moog Grandmother that had a better quality keybed - Fatar as you can expect) however the keys on all three Behringer synths including MS1 are perfectly fine and really playable - not overly loose or wiggly. I have to say I am totally satisfied with the overall quality of Behringer synths and that includes their keybeds too👍👍😎🌈🤟👊I am now working on my new MS1 video so please check back here on my channel soon👍😎❤

      @@synthsforfunk and how would you rate it vs the Barp? Im looking for a funk controller, i have the Boog, but only a controller with weighted piano keys and a cheepo master controllers with wiggly loose keys. I am on the lookout for a moog little phatty stage 2, because of the keys, as i thought the barp keybed was considered too wiggly. Soundwize the barp is more up to he funk alley i think but i thought the keybad was considered not good by most? Anyways, love your vids on funky keys.

      @@blouies thank you so much for the kind words!!👍🤟😎between Odyssey and MS1 if the better controller is what you want I would take the MS1 since the keys on both have practically the same feel however with the Odyssey push buttons you may not be able to easily control the pitch and modulation of your external hardware modules (i.e your Boog synth) while on the MS1 you have your standard pitch bend and a mod lever all in one and to my knowledge it works very well with the hardware modules. Sure I love Odyssey for its more raw and earthy funky sounds but the MS1 might be more practical for what you need and it still sounds super funky👍🤟❤️

      Thank you for commenting on my video and on this fabulous synth! Regarding the bass slides I have not really tried so cannot tell for sure but I believe this will be very much possible, with the help of the Glide function on the MS-1 synth it should give you some fantastic options and super funky slides👍🤟👊😎🌈❤️

    How can I set tempo for sequencer? The nob has no display or labels, and my Po-12 doesn’t work as external clock, and I don’t understand midi, so am I screwed?

    • @synthsforfunk
      @synthsforfunk  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there and thanks for making a visit to my channel, glad to have you here for sure!👍👍 As for your question, I am afraid I am not the right guy to give you the answer as I generally do not use onboard sequencers on any of my synths so have not really dug deeper into this functionality at all as I do not have a use for it for my own way of working or recording synths. Everetyhing I record is played live by me, no MIDI sequencing for me, sorry. But I am sure there are plenty of more experienced synth users/players that can give you proper info on how to use the MS-1 sequencer. Sorry about my lack of knowledge regarding this - I am not much of a technical guy when it comes to synths in fact more of a "player". Hopefully you get the advice you need soon! Take care and keep the funk alive! 👍😎🤘❤

    I dont remember the sh 101 sounding this funky ?

    • @synthsforfunk
      @synthsforfunk  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for the comment. In fact I used to own the original SH101 long time ago but sold it not really knowing what I had as I only cared for MIDI capabalities back then which it did not have of course so I let it go. Later I regretted that my decision after I started to appreciate what analog synths can do for me. Too late I guess. But this Behringer reissue is terrific and basically kills all the lust I may have in reacquring the original Roland SH synth. It does the 101 thing so well and offers so much more than the vintage unit could ever hope for. It is definitely more than just a cheap copy! It´s one fantastic sounding synth in its own right👍👊🤟😎❤️
