    So many videos that go from normal levels to whisper levels, yet expecting you to hear it as if it was obvious. So many editors I SWEAR never play back their own audio before publishing. Also the same with text on screen: Golden rule is that you as the editor that knows the text, should be able to read the text THREE times for the viewer to be able to effectively read it ONCE.

    Hi Ailee, thank you so much for providing the in-depth detail about audio normalization. Typically my videos are virtual walking tours with just ambient noise. Would it be okay if my videos have a content loudness of around -25dB or would that be too quiet?

    • @aileezaga
      @aileezaga  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thank you for your question! Yes! -25dB should be fine since the audio in your videos is ambiance. -14dB is a more appropriate loudness for videos with dialogue. 😊

    • @VeeTravels
      @VeeTravels ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aileezaga Oh I see. Although I saw the other videos similar to mine on TH-cam and they keep it at around -10dB. I am thinking of shifting the audio up by +5dB or so globally to at least have the sound more noticeable. What do you think?

  • @VolumetricTerrain-hz7ci
    @VolumetricTerrain-hz7ci ปีที่แล้ว

    Allow me to introduce a new unit of measurement for sound volume,
    which I call vovol* (abbreviated: volume voltage).
    THIS IS HOW IT WORKS: You use two pre-stages, one with positive volume values, and the other negative.
    For example, so has the pre-step with positive values
    a measurement from +0 decibels up to +20, while the one with negative values, has from -0 decibels down to -20 decibels.
    The highest voltage occurs when the value is
    +20 and -20 decibels (or: 20 vovol),
    while there is low voltage, when the value is on
    +0 and -0 decibels (or: 0 vovol).
    You can possibly also combine two different values with each other, by adjusting the value to +10 -20 vovol, which gives a crisper effect. Have experimented with this myself at work and at home.
    The adjustment can of course be set to taste, but the purpose of vovol for me is to equalize the sound volume, so that you better hear weak sounds and at the same time avoid high deafening sound levels (loudness war's).
    Thank you for reading this!
    Take care of your hearing...
    :-)
    Awesome video anyway!

  • @ahom_ahom_ahom

    So odd. My video was made with YouLean loudness meter, and showed -14 LUFS, TH-cam's standard, and yet my video was reduced by 4.9dB? So strange. I'm really having TH-cam sound issues.

    • @aileezaga
      @aileezaga  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ahom_ahom_ahom That's odd indeed. 🤔 I wonder if TH-cam's loudness standard has changed since I made this video. I'll take a look.
      UPDATE: It seems -14 LUFS is still the standard as of 2024. I can think of 2 suggestions.
      1) Make sure you are getting -14 on integrated loudness and not on short term.
      2) If you are still having issues, as an experiment, try aiming for -15 or -16 instead. I've done this before to be safe and was happy with the loudness of my videos.
      I hope this helps, my friend!

      @@aileezaga Thanks for the reply. And thanks for the video too. There is no shortage of videos on this subject, but most of the methods shown don't actually result in meeting TH-cam's recommended -14 LUFS.
      Setting levels in DaVinci Resolve is something that looks like it should be simple, but it doesn't take too long to realize that no matter what Target loudness level is set at the project level, the rendered output never changes. (Apparently) the only thing the project affects is the metering, and even then, only certain metering.
      There may be a way to do it with the tools built into Fairlight, but it's certainly not obvious to me how to match what YouTUbe wants. For example, one might think that by setting the project to -14 LUFS and then normalizing the timeline to -1, that it would come out just perfect for TH-cam, but sadly, that just not true.
      The Waves WLM Plus Loudness Meter plugin actually works - if I adjust for -14 LUFS in the readout, then TH-cam shows a content loudness adjustment near zero dB. It's a little fussier than I would prefer, and annoying to me that it can't be done from the Edit tab, but at least it does provide the desired results!

    • @aileezaga

      Hola! Gracias por tu pregunta. El nivel de volumen de referencia actual de TH-cam es -14 LUFS. Cuando ves el valor negativo significa que ese es el número de decibeles abajo de -14 LUFS, donde se encuentra el volumen de tu video.

    2 years ago it may have been the case that youtube doesnt increase the volume however its not the case anymore. Most people watch videos through the youtube mobile app these days rather than a PC, and unfortunately the volume levels are completley different through the app. One of my videos plays perfect through the pc however, the video begins with a softly spoken passage and due to an automatic normalisation algorithm on the mobile app which increases the volume - the quality is drastically reduced and i know of nothing I can do to allow my volume levels to be left alone! I did a little test and re uploaded the video with minus 16 decibels, however, through the app the volume is just as loud and distorted as the original which was at -1.4db when viewed through the pc and 'stats for nerds'.

I download music from TH-cam but annoyingly, some songs have a low volume (and at times muffled too), while some are loud and clear. I want to compile songs of the same consistent volume, if possible. Can you please share your expertise? In advance, thank you

    • @aileezaga
      @aileezaga  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! Thank you for your kind comment!
      When it comes to downloading music from TH-cam there is no way to change the volume of the file from the downloading service.
      The only way to get the volume of the songs to be consistent would be to import them into a Digital Audio Workstation and set their volume to a similar level from there. You can find free software to be able to do this.
      There might also be programs that can help you normalize the volume of your songs, although if the quality of the file is poor the results might not be great.
      I hope this helps, and thank you for watching!

    • @aileezaga
      @aileezaga  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey! Thank you for your question! DRC stands for Dynamic Range Compression. To my understanding TH-cam has been implementing it for volume normalization, basically compressing everything and bringing it to the same volume level. You can disable it in your video settings, where it says "Stable Volume".

    Mmm. Why does the "TH-cam" preset in Shotcut produce a much too quiet video?

    • @aileezaga
      @aileezaga  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not familiar with that editor, but it's difficult to create templates for loudness because the audio you record is always gonna be different. Even in a studio environment my audio levels vary from video to video.
      If you have audio tools available in the program you might be able to adjust the volume manually.
      Hope this helps!

    One question.. what is the best loudness fo music only videos like, music videos😃?

    • @aileezaga
      @aileezaga  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's an excellent question!
      When it comes to music, there is no 'one size fits all' target loudness, but rather a range of what is competitive and how much of the dynamics one is willing to compromise based on genre.
      Mastering for different streaming platforms is still somewhat in the ball park of TH-cam loudness, if you are below threshold by a few dB LUFS that is ok, but I would advise to not go over. So, no louder than -14 LUFS.
      This other TH-camr made an excellent video about this topic, where he explains in depth. I hope this helps!

    If I play my youtube video on my laptop it sounds good and loud. If I play it on my cell phone it sounds quieter. Is this something that I can fix within youtube or my cellphone? My latest video is at 100% / 55% (content loudness 5.1dB) In old tutorials there was a feature that allowed you to raise the volume in Creative Studio but that feature is gone or I can't find it.

    • @aileezaga
      @aileezaga  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thank you for your question!
      No, unfortunately there is no way to fix that within TH-cam's settings. At least at the present moment.
      It is odd that the video sounds quiet on your phone though, from what you describe, this shouldn't be the case. Check your phone settings, maybe there is an issue there.
      Hope this helps, have a good day. :)

    Please suggest any technique for default volume balance which can be useful for all videos which we are watching! Means we do not need to set balance for each and every videos.

    • @aileezaga
      @aileezaga  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, if you are referring to videos that have already been uploaded to TH-cam, there is no way that I'm aware of, to set them all to the same volume.
      The normalization that TH-cam applies aims to prevent videos from being too loud (by lowering the volume past a certain threshold), but they don't raise the volume of videos that are too quiet.

      @Kiranmai Hi, thank you for your question! The difference in volume that you are experiencing right now has more to do with the headphones and the earphones themselves rather than the volume of your audio. I recommend getting a metering plugin so that you can accurately measure the loudness of your audio and be sure that the volume will be optimal for your uploads.
      A free option is the MLoudnessAnalyzer, if you don't mind a paid option my favorite one is the WLM Plus Loudness Meter. From there, you can follow along with my tutorial to make sure you get as close as possible to -14LUFS.
      I hope this helps! :)

    Why is it necessary to "get" the correct volume? Why can't You Tube control volume from their end? From silence to unbearable; I think they can fix it at a middle range.

    TH-cam's normalization is limited and ineffective at equalizing the level of people speaking calmly, professional news uploads at -23 dB, and young social media celebrities SHOUTING with breaths edited out at -12 dB. They should make the target level adjustable with the volume slider. I don't get why these big plaforms set in stone. -14 dB is too high for natural dialog without music.
