I'd first heard Whitney's version and loved it. Years after I heard Annie's version and was amazed, I love this version much more. Whitney's version is more positive, lyrics carry more positive messages and even sadder lines are sung in a joyful manner. These make that version somehow unnatural, it becames something like a silly friend giving depressed you advices "to be positive, to believe in yourself blah blah". But Annie's version have a lot of sadness, hurt, depression in it, it makes you feel all the hurt and sadness, hopelessness inside, then it lifts you up from inside, makes you feel the power and hope in you and does this without "inspirational" shouting and supportive screaming, it speaks to you calmly like your inner voice ("I've got the will to guide me Just where I want to go").

@@ziggyvusal totally agree with you. I prefer the original version much better. I felt Whitney's version was not very heartfelt whereas Annie's version was. I understand why Annie gave this song to Whitney because Whitney could do something good with it but I was not impressed with Whitney's effort for this song.

@@ziggyvusal Humans are not robots. Each of us require different things to carry on. If I'm hurt and sad, I don't want a song to make me feel it more. Some do. So be it. That's why it's great to have a variety of singers and their interpretations of songs. The thing you may find "unnatural" may be what someone finds healing. Whereas I prefer Whitney's version for the role it played in the needs I had at the time of its release, I greatly appreciate the original. Nevertheless.... Singing with encouragement and projecting the voice with a gospel style are often mistaken for singing joyfully, shouting, or screaming. Nowhere does Whitney scream or shout in this song. That's a load of nonsense. Whitney sings with power and was known for her ability to project her voice with clarity.

DaOrigTruthSeeker Wow! Looks like someone is cranky. Everyone has an opinion, and my opinion is Annie's version is better. Something special about the writer singing her own words, gives the song much more meaning. Can't compare to Annie! No disrespect to Whitney, but I find an artist that writes the words and then sings them, is more relatable. Hey, by the way, I don't give a rats ass what you think either! Go troll somewhere else.
