I've been a fan of Kula Shaker, whose name was inspired by a 9th century Indian king, since their hey-day in the late 90s when they'd play with bands like Oasis, Elastic and Radiohead. Their psychedelic rock mixed with traditional Indian music and mysticism is irresistible. They have had an on-again, off-again history but for now, the band's original line-up consisting of lead singer/guitarist Crispian Mills, keyboardist Jay Darlington, bassist Alonza Bevan and drummer Paul Winterheart are all indisputably ON-again. And I loved every minute!
"Hey Dude," from the band's 1996 debut album K, was the opening number of the night's set at the Regent Theater, a night that would conclude their 2023 North American tour. A song about the temptations of the world and the constant need to stave them off, it has been a staple of the band's sets almost since Day One..
Kula Shaker doesn't get to LA often. Enjoy this glimmer of English glamour.
