    My wife and I renovated a house in Tokyo and are living in it now. I am American, my wife is Japanese and we both were living in the US. She inherited the house when her father died about two years ago and renovations were required before we could move in -- the doorways all were about 4" shorter than I am, for example. We considered package renovation companies, but in the end hired an architect and a construction company to do the work. It is a completely different house inside now and we are very pleased with the result. The architect had a lot of experience with small Tokyo houses, had good ideas, and worked hard as our advocate with the builder. We moved into the house about 11 months ago and are still enjoying it. You are very brave to take on as much of the renovation work yourself as you have and I congratulate you.

    • @TokyoLlama
      @TokyoLlama  3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Sounds like a similar experience to us. The architect has been invaluable in drawing up proper plans for the carpenters, and advocate as you’ve said. One reason for choosing architect/carpenter that I forgot to mention was that the package renovation companies were not keen for me to work on stuff myself (prob for warranty reasons understandably).

      Some of them here are quite large, actually. Perhaps different things than you would find in the US, etc. but the selection in the larger Home Centers is quite good; pretty-much anything a DIY-er might need. Due to the difference in laws here, there are some things you cannot get in a Home Center and can only purchase from specialty shops with a a proper license, such as anything to do with LPG or natural/city gas, larger electrical components and their parts such as panelboards, circuit breakers, and the like, some plumbing supplies, etc...

    You so had me laugh at the "my wife is not keen at me going there", she sees the shed filled with power tools XD Don't worry, the kids will adapt and can grow roots there, of course renovating a house takes longer than building a new one and really, a company with architects and builders can have errors too, believe me ;>D I love it you let us follow your renovation. Thanks for all the time you put in making these video's.

      That’s a good idea!

    • @Lostisland88
      @Lostisland88 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      The ones that track the sun are more expensive, and for a residential application are usually not worth it. I think I remember back from one of your earlier vids that you kept one of the shed buildings. If the roof on that isn't too fancy you could mount the solar panels on that. Main thing is they need to be facing south though.

    • @FreekHoekstra
      @FreekHoekstra 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@Lostisland88 unfortunataely you are corect, the flower ones look amazing, but realistically, they cost way too much for the amount they produce.
      it would likely be better to put the over a carport, or on top of a shed or something like that.

    • @SparklilyCordiale
      @SparklilyCordiale 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Maybe panels on the roof of the shed if you are not planning to demolish it?

    • @cyqry
      @cyqry 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Does anyone know how much more power the tracking ones produce compared to a well-positioned static panel?
      Initial costs aside, I'm just wondering if the amount of power you get from it moving would outweigh the amount used to move it in the first place.

    I have lived in Japan for over 40 years and raised two bi-lingual children who are now in their 30s. I have also taught English Conversation at a Jr. High School for 25 years and got to know quite a few kids of international marriages. I commend your approach to keeping your children bilingual but it is a balancing act, isn't it? It sounds as if you are at the stage where being intentional about exposure to English (and people who only speak English) is important. In the classroom I found that bi-cultural students who had been raised in Japan were usually fully bilingual if their mother was the foreigner. Keeping children bilingual takes conscious effort and discipline if their father, who may be bilingual himself to some degree, is the only one speaking English to them. (Opposite would be true, of course, if you were living in Australia.) Hang in there and don't worry if they seem dominantly one or the other at any one point. Just be aware and constantly exposing them to the "I have to speak my weaker language" situations that will keep oiling the gears in their little heads.

      @@TokyoLlama My professional background is as a speech pathologist and I'm so excited that you're bringing up your children bilingual! Your strategy of having one parent speak Japanese and the other English is excellent. If the kids talk to you in Japanese though, it's still good to respond to them in English. Perhaps if you don't completely understand them you could ask them to clarify in English, but still responding to them will be good for their ongoing language and social skills development :)
      I've got Japanese friends and my brother's girlfriend is Hungarian so I'm hoping to exploit their language skills for my own kids one day ;)

    As a fellow gaijin DIYer in the Gunma mountains, we finished (?) building a new home on five acres about 10 years ago. It was a seven-days-a-week process for almost two years, but it was also a passion so no pain. Building your own home is quite satisfying, and you get to know every stick of the construction. I admire your ability and patience to document and share the process, that's a lot of work if not a huge distraction from the immediate tasks. The advantage and disadvantage of DIY is that it is never complete (details, details) and always evolving as needs change and tools always ready. I enjoy hearing your stories and following your process. Cheers!

    I’ve been following your series and thoroughly enjoying it. Where I live in Osaka, the trend in my neighborhood is for the lovely old homes to be torn down and replaced with 2 or 3 storey boxes, a few inches apart, no garden and maybe room to park one small car with inches to spare all around. Another of my neighboring houses was torn down a few days ago. I know its probably more cost effective to demolish than renovate, and also a more effective use of the land, but it is sad to see these lovely old homes and gardens go. I hope you continue with the series after you move in - maybe a seasonal update on what you have done. Would love to see the garden in all seasons.

      It's not just the Japanese...that kind of sad architectural genocide is happening here in Texas too. So many cute little houses torn down, so many ugly boxy condos/apartments/garden homes going up. (Remember the old song about the houses being "ticky tacky"?) I imagine that in 20 years they will be falling apart and no one will want to live in them. It's a delight when I happen to encounter anyone with the foresight and fortitude to save a precious piece of architecture like you are doing there. It almost gives me hope. Thank you so much for this channel. Inspirational on so many levels!

    Having worked on many restorations the idea that one can be true to the original design is more myth than reality. Pealing back the layers of any restoration one discovers many shortcuts and curious choices that were more often than not the result of limited time and resources. The more things change the more they stay the same. ;) As long as you’re happy with the overall end product is what counts. Since your original reason for embarking on the purchase was to have ample outdoor space, well you’ve reached your goal. Everything else will evolve. Less is more, keep it simple. Abide. Congratulations and cheers!

    I came across your vlog completely by accident, but I'm so pleased I did. I've been to Japan as a tourist, however I've never had time to examine building technics and such. I love all the wood and joinery and sliding panels, floor construction and walls and beams ceilings and anything Japanese overall. Especially the style and beauty of the roof. Thank you for allowing me to follow on your journey. I am impressed with your enthusiasm if not your knowledge. I am a carpenter and construction worker all my life. My wife and I just completed building our own home from start to finish. With a small amount of help but we did most of it 85 percent ourselves. It is a very satisfying accomplishment. Since we started in our 60s. Many people said we were crazy. My motto is. Never explain yourself, your friends don't need it and your enemies will not believe you. Cheers, keep up the great work. Watching this middle of November and hearing you say 'August' for moving-in is pretty funny. First-time owners always underestimate the time needed to get work done. Last 10% of any build can often take 25% of the time and budget - seems to catch almost every new owner offguard.

    I think your doing a marvellous job, keeping the essence of the house and not changing things too much. I love what your doing with the kitchen, removing the ceiling was a master stroke, so nice to open the original carpenters work for people to see, it’s very aesthetically pleasing.
    Your so very lucky to have been able to acquire the services of the original builder, I’d be very interested to hear what his thoughts are on the renovations, would be nice to film his response with translation if he would agree.
    I was also very impressed that you had the house blessed it shows that you have a great respect for the Japanese culture, and the willingness to respect the previous owner.

    Having heard that this is your first time doing such a big renovation is inspiring. I'm glad to hear there aren't any regrets you have on any particular matter, considering it being your future home.
    I hope I can visit Japan some time in the future, so it's been a relief to know that neighbours have been nice.
    I'm looking forward to your next videos! Thank you so much for taking some time to answer the questions and filling us in on your experiences!

    Thank you for sharing your journey! I've really enjoyed watching the transformation and I for one really love what you're doing with your balance between modern and traditional. I've renovated a few houses in my time and hope to get hands on another in the future, but I'll never have a house like this. It's been wonderful to vicariously experience it through your videos!
