For your breeder bins, I understood from the video that you place 500 adult breeders per mortar tray for about 21-24days and expect around 2000 cocoons at the the time of sifting. So at your scale, somewhere between 1-2 cocoons per adult breeder per week is considered efficient/effective . . . that's very helpful, Samantha--thank you. You had mentioned on your breeder bins that you stop adding water and let the bins air dry for a week before sifting in order to eliminate excessive moisture in vermicompost/clumping of eggs--I might of missed it, but I'm curious if you are mixing or churning that bedding in each tray at any time in that three week window or do you leave the bedding undisturbed until sifting. Great video detail, how much gallons of bedding per your 500 breeder worms are in your bins, I saw in the comments you said the bins were 6 inch deep put only 1 to 2 inches filled. Also, is it the same size nursery bin for the cocoons and filled same depth? Thank you for taking the time to answer the questions in the comments:) Oh, one more, do you put the half an apple in straightaway, and is there a specific time frame when you split the nursery bin each time or is splitting determined by something else, thanks again.

I tried to calculate how much bedding that works out to, off the dimensions of the bin that you linked in another comment, but it looks like the bin is curved on the bottom in that link so I couldnt figure the volume that would fill 1-2 inches of that bin even though the link said it was a 10 gallon bin and 26x20x6. It would really help get the best start on making up a similar breeder bin at home if I knew how many gallons that works out to as I can't purchase that exact bin here in my country, thank you.

Samatha i assume with as many bins you feed only your worm chow. How often do you feed? I try to feed wèkly but i have only 3 bins. And i feed food scraps. Of anyone needs more food scrap check woth farmers mkt. Went last month got enough free for about a month. Now i need another small freezer. 😊

Why do you feel that the time spent hand counting your 500 Worms is important. In other words, why is that degree of accuracy important? Also, have you changed you bedding mix after seeing the results of the Chef Boyardee experiment?
I have not changed the breeder mixture but I am experimenting in my beds. The reason we hand count is if you go over or under it affects the cocoons ratio. It's very important to have the exact count. Thank you for the kind words.
Hi JO, This was determined by trail. Yes the tray can hold more but then the worms we more crowded and didn't lay as many cocoons. Didn't feel they needed more babies I guess.
Hey Samantha, amazing vid! Do you know what happens when a red wiggler mates with a blue? Someone on Reddit mentioned it would result in 2 sterile, empty cocoons. Know if that is true?
You stated the you used 50/50 pittmoss and manure. Are you using a store bought composted manure? Out here where I live the feedlots/farms use lots meds and I don't want that in my bins.
Thank you for another great training video! I love your setup. We don't have the space to do quite as well, but are working at being better organized. What i learned today will go a long way toward that. One quick question: Where do you get your trays? We have been having difficulty finding enough here in northern IL. In fact, we've bought out all of the mortar trays from four large building supplies and they are having trouble restocking with enough to do us any good.
Ask at the fish counter where you shop - they have Styrofoam boxes that the fish comes in. They are smaller - maybe two to a cement tray. The cost is 2 X $0.00 - I can handle that. Watch the Bilsdale Worms video for a prevue.
Math question: So if you don’t sift and if we pretend the new breed tray only breeds for 21 days then stops: 1) 500 breeder worms make 2000 cocoons. 2) cocoons hatch in 40-60 days 3) after 60days, assuming they all hatch with an average of 3 juveniles, that means you have 6000 juvenile worms. 4) that means in under 90 days, you went from 500 worms to 6500. That is 13x worms in 90 days. So why is it commonly said worms double every 90 days?
Under ideal conditions red wigglers can in theory hit 28+x in 90 days. I’ve heard the comment about doubling before also and I just laugh. I’m doing a tedious experiment right now. 200 adult red wigglers in a 5 gallon buck with 2 gallons of sifted finished compost. I started them on august 24th,counted every cocoon I could find today, 325 of them. Pulled all the adults out and I’m going to count the worms in 69 days so I don’t have to look for a bunch of babies. Worst case I’m expecting 600+ worms. Add that to the original 200 and that’s 4x in 90 days. And conditions where I live are anything but “ideal”.

I do not know the gallons. Just make whatever bin you have 1 to 2". That would be the correct way not figuring gallons as it may make it too deep.
