Hard lesson for Carter to learn: evil can be right in front of your eyes but you can't see it, and because of that you end up harming a lot of people. He had a good thing with Janet, but he ruined it by opening his mouth to talk smack about her dad. If he truly loved her, he would have respected the fact that she loved her father.
