After being plucked from the audience I had the frightening pleasure of being on stage with the Legend Freddie Starr in Oxford with his support act magician Rob Bromley.
A memory I will keep forever.
RIP the one and only Freddie Starr

Grew up watching Freddie Starr and to see what they made him become, at the end of his years, was nothing but criminal.

During the Savile hysteria, he was accused of sexual assault, which he strenuously denighed, it was declared unproven, but the legal fight cost him highly, and he died pennyless.@@nathelondon3719

@@nathelondon3719none. But was accused of a heinous crime. The accusation killed him. It hurt him so deeply.

@@alanashore9570 He was a troubled man too. His alcoholic Dad's abuse, plus the fact that he was half jewish on his mother's side may have taken a toll on him too. Anti-semitism was and is still rife. Plus it wasn't all that long prior to 1988 that WW2 had happened, which, had the germans won?? well lets not go there. Its hard to say, but these things can really affect people negatively.

I loved his mainstream TV performances. He was superb with audience members and his guests. The Vincent routine was genius, the "speed up/slow down" thing he did, all the brilliant impressions, Adolf in wellies, singing with the Jordinaires, etc. Wonderful, every moment. In fact, the only Freddie stuff I don't love is the near-the-knuckle sweary, sexual stuff he did for later stage shows. But fortunately, there's plenty of the former to represent his sheer talent and originality. Still miss him. :-)

Sort of act you still see every Saturday night in a caravan or holiday camp club house.
I thought he was quite funny at the time, but you knew what he was going to do. Not saying it was not funny.
I remember Eric Morecambe saying that he and Ernie Wise did the same act for 25 years live but employed great writers for TV; Freddie Starr just did his club act.
