    Thank you Sensei, i have been training karate for 7-8 years, but then i made a break from it around 3-4 years, i am a brown belt (a step away from black) i regret making that 3 year break, im looking to get back into karate now, it's good to refresh my memory by watching your videos, very informative content

    One reason is that a strike is most powerful at the end/point-of-attack. Stepping into a strike with a block or deflection stunts the attack where it is weaker. The closer on the arm or leg to the point of origin that you block, the less resistance you will face.

    Great video tutorial. If I may point out a correction, that would be to check the trajectory of those Soto uke esp. from your right hand as they look like uppercuts. Thanks for the clear instruction and for capturing good amount of detail in your blocking techniques.

    We've always been taught that, in gedan-barai, that the non-blocking arm, which you put forward when the blocking arm is next to your head, should be a little in front of the crotch, so that you can protect a little, while your block is coming.
    It looks like that when you've made the first block, you just let that arm stay excactly the same place, while you take the other arm up to your head.
    We've also been taught that the blocking arm, should be about 10-15 cm/5-6 inches, above the knee.

    I know THAT bow to be called the "Peasant bow" The Warrior has his hand on the front of his thighs with elbows slightly bent so you can be ready to block anything that comes your way because your arms are "cocked" and ready to block.

    this is a good question!
    1) You need to turn your head, always the side of you behind leg.
    2) Then you put your hand above the opposite shoulder.
    3) Turn and do gedan barai.
    Well. At least this is the way that my sensei teach to me.

    KATAS ARE THE HEART OF KARATE -DO- The Okinawan katas are the basis for most modern karate. Without kata there would be no karate- The katas are what makes the martial arts an art. Many hidden movements are contained, throws, takedowns and sweeps.- As far as the Japanese are concerned- supposed the Americans had lost the second world war- Would we be so anxious to teach the invading soldiers the correct way to do anything? The katas are deceptive but when studied their value is found.

    I have a question! Please if you could help me out- when you do the blocks for e.g the gedan barai and shuto uke, we actually hear the movement. Even when my sensei does this its the same.
    Its the only thing lacking in my kata, which makes it appear that I don't put enough strength it when I do it. How can I actually do that? Does it develop with regular practice..or something else?

    • @BritSpit
      @BritSpit 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's a combination of using a heavyweight gi, and an exhalation of breath. In Korean arts we call it 'shin chook' breathing, or 'ho hop cho chun'; breath power

    THESE ARE NOT ACTUALLY BLOCKS- THEY ARE STRIKES- You guys have a lot to learn. When you become aware of this the techniques/bunkai from all the katas become better understood. The shuto is clearly a strike, the ready hand is used to grab. The outside and inside so called blocks will not stop a punch. The upper block fits perfectly under the chin- The lower block is used to hit an opponet who is on the ground and can also be used to strike an incoming kicking leg ..
