Awesome - thanks a lot. Most of your stuff didn't work only with "Strike Commander", but also e. g. with "Descent". Especially the graphics settings. Good job!
Just a comment for joystick setup for anyone else with a Thrustmaster T.16000M (which should have been very similar), I was having trouble with the hat controlling the POV, the solution that worked for me was to change joystick type in the dosbox config to "ch" and then in game options menu changing both the flight control and panning control to "FS Pro."
Phil and others, if you care about accurate emulation of the game, you should use output=openglnb instead of output=opengl. The "opengl" option applies bilinear filtering, which slightly smudges the graphics throughout the game (i.e. even the menus). The "openglnb" option, on the other hand, has "no bilinear," which retains the sharper, more pixelated look that the game was meant to have. At such a low resolution of 320x200, the difference isn't dramatic, but you can notice it if you switch between them.
Yea I know that setting. The thing with the integer scaling is that pixels end up having different sizes. Especially test can look really odd because of this. OpenGL hides this somewhat, but it's also a compromise. So overall I find OpenGL gives a better image.
Yeah, after playing with openglnb some more, I see that it has some issues with scaling. I really don't like how much filtering the opengl setting applies, though, since it washes out the colors and detail by slightly blurring everything. On close inspection, I've discovered that ddraw does the same thing, though not quite to the same extent at opengl. I'm starting to appreciate the ol' overlay setting a lot more. It applies no filtering, so games look as pixelated as they should, and it doesn't appear to have any scaling issues. To me, output=overlay and fulldouble=false provide the most accurate and smoothest graphics in Strike Commander.
Have the exact same joystick but in CTRL F1,every button binds to only 0,1,2 or 3 not to the rest of the numbers. When I hit the fire button,it triggers the landing gear for example.
Another awesome Tweak Guide Phil; much appreciated! This game looks great; I never played it back in the day, but I do own a copy on GOG, so I'll definitely be giving it a whirl with this video! That's weird about BassMidi becoming unresponsive; that only happened to me when I installed VirtualMidiSynth (it was a bit of a hassle to restore functionality); I wonder if it's correlated for you as well...
The Atomik Punk! Thanks :) Hmm, thanks for the tip. I will try removing both and seeing if I can get BassMIDI going again. I've also never played it. It was a bit too "complex" for me. Preferred the simpler Wing Commander games.
I set the joystick up exactly as you, but it's not working. When the game starts, it pops up a calibration prompt, but it does not register any button presses.
IF! Phil and others are still around? What are the best Arcade'ish modern'ish games = Strike Commander on pc? Looking at 2: Ace Combat 7 Skies Unknown Project Wingman
OT but do you know where I can find a list of opl3 supported games? I'm trying to make a list of impressive adlib music, one for opl2 and one for opl3. Also this game should have stereo/dual opl2 fm support according to nerdypleasures.
Very cool! I remember trying to play this game when it originally came out, but PC could not handle it proper at the time, it could run but the frame rate was garbage, when I finally ended up upgrading my PC a couple of months later, this has fallen out of my radar and there was other things that I wanted to play more, and I actually never played this game properly. What sound font are you using?

A hero. Thank you for your work.
Many thanks for this,
loved this game as a kid, still do!
I still have the CD in-box copy so I don't need to know how to make a DOS install, but the rest oif this is pretty helpful.

You are awesome!!! Thanks so much. Although I cannot map any key for my joystick but it's probably my gear's fault

How can I establish an event like Ctrl+Esc in the keymapper of dosbox?
Hmm one question does it work with a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick?

Very nice and informative!
+Mephistoons Thank you!
Can these settings be used in d-fend reloaded?
Absolutely! I very much prefer D-Fend to be honest, I only use DOSBox and manually editing of the config file because it's a GOG game.
imo FM sounds better than gm
