Gotta find the Hudson Bee in Stage 1. He's how you get a continue, but even then it's got extra steps afterwards. Hold Right and press Start on Title screen
I thought the "hold right + start" was a cheat, not the legal way to activate the continue. The mad men! You need to know a trick to activate your continue or you don't use it! LOL

I was surprised he didn't find that odd. I bet he noticed, but didn't pay attention to it meaning anything, due to all the janky games he's played. Maybe he just thought it was jank.
Note that when your weapon appears to stop in midair there is a secret on that spot. eggs, elevators and such. MORE IMPORTANTLY THERE IS A CONTINUE FUNCTION. its referred to as the continue bee or hudson bee, and its at the very end of the first level. A hidden egg on the final platform before the end.
Hi Ryu if you're going to continue this game I will give you some tips: 1. Fairy makes you invulnerable to everything even fireplaces. 2. Eggs are everywhere in the ground to trigger them only jump on them. To know where they are located you shoot and where disappear the shoots are where eggs stand waiting for you. 3. Lives are given when you complete every 50000 points also they're hid in some levels if you don't lose any live (there is one hidden just before the fireplace in level 1-4 inside an egg). 4. Try to learn how to win without the skateboard, it only makes you lose a lot of points. 5. Top bar means time. Every fruit and m's pot gives it to you (m's pot gets you to the maximum amount of time) 6. Monkey pots duplicates your score. 7. pumpkin fairy takes all the time out from you, so avoid them. 8. First level contains a bonus level, you trigger it by shooting between the pilars before the snake a lot of times. Level 1-3 also has one bonus level you need to take a key from an egg placed in the temple before ice part. Take the key and stay in the platform that falls it will get you up to the bonus level (try to shoot to locate the egg). 9. In the game over screen if you press start and select, the game will allow you to continue in the world you died. 10. Try not to rush because are a lot of things hidden in the game that will help you in the future so try to get everything you can. I hope you see this comment if not at least try to beat this game and continue with the sequels of this beautiful game...
I remember playing this game a long time ago, forgot the name now i'm feeling nostalgic while watching this video. I'm gonna go download an emulator and play this rn :D
I was hoping him to discover any special minigame that skips parts of the level giving you a lot of fruits. Or at least the way to find a hidden eggs with items.
One of my favorite childhood memories was of this game, every New Years Eve, my whole family would play this game, even my Mom and she never gamed. Good stuff!
Quick tips: "Health bar" is for monitoring the starving, that's why you have to collect fruit (it works more like a timer) There are spots where your tomahawks seems to collide with something invisible, jump twice in such places to reveal a secret egg Angels make you invincible, so you can collide with anything in your path That was a pretty tough game back in the day, so i believe you can finish it. Good luck!
I still play this game on my Wii U. It's been over a year since I've played, I've gotten to the fourth world (around level 14). The food you collect fills your energy bar at the top-run out of energy and you die (like a refillable timer). Great to see you play it!
at the end of 1-1 there is a hidden egg that has a bee in it. lets you have infinite continues if you hit select after you run out of lives (edit someone else says hold right and then start. That may beeeee the actual input. Its beeeeen a while). I remember finding the bee and not knowing what to do with it. however in the gamebook it has a picture of the bee and how to use it.
Ahh yes the classic must-read-the-manual era of games. Where if you don't the game is basically impossible 🤣🙅♂️🙅♀️ My favorite was a move in Swamp Thing for nes that was only described in the manual and even then I couldn't figure out how to do it!
Ha! Look at Ryu! Dying on first level. Look at him and laugh. Hahahaha. *Starts remembering the childhood and realize that I died more than Ryu on first level and the fact that I still haven't completed this game yet and then proceed to cry.*
if you shot and the hammer suddenly dissapear it means that there is a hidden egg in that spot. also, if you jump in some places it appears a platform that lead you to a bonus screen. it's al about keeping shooting and jumping all the time
Ryu, Master Higgins is a portley fellow, the "life bar" is his starvation meter, he'll die if he isn't constantly eating. When your weapon disappears it signifies a secret egg and there's a hudson bee in level 1 that lets you continue.
I used to love this game as a kid and never knew it was so tough. I guess the difference between then and now is that then I got a game over and went outside to play as the hero of the story; now I just game over and complain
After renting this back in the day, my grandmother decided she needed to buy a copy. She found out about the continues, and would play through a good portion of the day, and left the game running so she could continue later. My NES was held hostage for about 2 weeks until the console decided it had enough and the game froze. I don't think she ever beat the game, but she still brings it up in conversation from time to time.
For people unfamiliar to Adventure Island, that bar on the top is a stamina bar that get drained as you run. You take fruits to refill it. If the bar ran out, you lose a life.
First I really thought this game will not interest me at all. But the tremendous amount of detail is stunning. One example is the fire power up. Taking it back to how it was for the first humans. Fire changed everything and brought them to a new level. So it did in this game.
Couple tips: -When you hammers/fire stop without hitting the ground there is a hidden egg there -there is a hidden egg after the bridge next to cliff in the first level that allows you to continue (still requires a d-pad direction + start at gameover screen) -the egg plant saps you vitality bar -hitting rocks with your hammer causes the snake to shoot you -the milk bottle item refills your vitality bar -the flower power up doubles your fruit points
This is a “try and retry” game. Once you know the rules and start getting the hang of the pacing it gets super fun and you can tear through it. Brings back memories. My Mom loved this game.
Hey Ryu, if you want a continue, in the first level there is a secret egg with a honey bee, which grants you a continue if you game over. the egg is at the end, on the side of the cliff before the "G" sign. even with that I never managed to get too far in the game. Also, if you picked up a flower, it double the points for the whole stage (4 sections), so it helps getting to 50k points for extra lives.

@@adamdavis40208 I don't know how true this is, but this is what I've learnt from watching the Japanese show GCCX: Master Takahashi was president of Hudson. They made this game (not Wonder Boy, on which it's based on) and he put himself in it as the main character (look up a picture of him to see why the character has that face, lol). In the West, the Adventure Island protagonist is known as Master Higgins; but in Japan he's "Takahashi Meijin". He was a somewhat famous character from the 80s for his skill at shoot 'em ups (he was said to be able to shoot faster than anyone!). I remember playing the Sega Master system version (Wonderboy) a few years ago. I remembered the Gameboy games and I got crushed by this game which was significantly harder. I still beat it on one sitting, but learning about the secret world and that you need to rescue all dolls to unlock it crushed me again.... I felt accomplished for maybe 5 minutes xD
I beat this when I was a kid. It was one of the three nes games I owned when I was a kid, Ninja Gaiden being one of them. It took me about three months of straight playing this to beat it.
While my dad introduced me to other games, my mom introduced me to Adventure Islander. Hard AF. But the boss music is an absolute banger from 1-4. - If you run into the first crow on 1-1 with a skateboard, your ammunition changes.
This is a Sega game called Wonderboy. It was released on the Sega Master System a year before Hudson bought the rights and released it on Nintendo changing the name to Adventure Island and the character.
You can find hidden eggs by firing your weapon. The weapon will vanish before hitting the ground. Jump on that spot to uncover hidden eggs. This is my favorite to play as a kid due to the challenge and pace of the game.
If you ever decide to live stream more attempts at this game, or if you decide to make a series out of it I would LOVE to see more! If anyone can take this evil game down it's you, sir. Thanks for all the kick ass content Ryu!
Good lord this game.. I used to hate this game coz it was so difficult but could never put it away!!! Couldn't believe iy when i saw the thumbnail, this brought back memories man :')
I played this game a lot when I was a kid and I never beat it. Farthest I ever got was world 6, I think it was 6-2. I played it again as an adult on an emulator with save states just to get some closure.
I can't believe this game is on here. I played this SO much as a kid (in one of those 64 in 1 things that had a ton of NES games that I'd never otherwise been able to play). To be fair, I never did get very far into it haha
I remember playing this as a kid and the one for the Gensis. But the Super Adventure Island II for the SNES is such a hidden gem. Much easier by comparison but a lot of fun.
And now you understand where all the quarters in the 80's disappeared to. There's nothing better than seeing just how frustrating it is for someone to learn how to play the game 25 years later. Fee hints: hidden eggs are throughout each stage. Where your weapon disappears instead of firing through are either an egg or a bonus section.
Agree on 8:48. So messed up, but so hilarious at the same time. After all that effort jumping over the fire, the rock just effortlessly tosses him back into it 😂
Next time try to find the invisible egg with the Hudson Bee in stage 1. It enables continuing after a Game Over. (There are many invisible eggs in the game. If your weapon disappears for no apparent reason, you are most likely hitting an invisible egg. Jump on that spot to reveal them. For example, check at 11:05, right before jumping the bonfire, notice how your weapon disappeared a bit to the left of it, before it actually reached the ground? That's an egg.)
I played this a lot on the bootleg NES Super Joy thing as a kid, and could never get past the first stage lmao. I could never have imagined that it has 32 levels, so much longer than I could have imagined and way longer than most NES games.
Oh god this brings me back! I used to love this game! Had it on one of those scart 50in1 controller games. I must go dig it back out. Nostalgia is strong on this video!
I remember playing this game when I was younger. It's not bad, but it is definitely hard. As for the thing you think is HP it's sort of HP but it drains of hunger which you use food to replenish making it more of a timer you can get a bonus on.
I had this game on the Sega Master System. It was called Adventure Boy in the UK. It has noticeably different textures, music and sfx to this but the gameplay and levels are the same. I had a lot fun with it.
That is not your health bar, but the level timer. Also you can continue by holding any direction button and then pressing "start", but it will only work if you get the bee from the hidden egg at the end of the stage. Love the vids Ryu, great job
You have three lives, and if you game over, you go back to the beginning? Sounds like Super Mario Bros to me. That must be how it felt to play Super Mario Bros for the first time
I swear I beat this game in childhood along with my elder brother....it was soooooo freaking hard we didn't sleep the whole night.... Lovely memories 😍
Oh m'y God! Wonderboy! I played the hell out of it in the arcade as a student. I'm so happy to see you getting addicted to it. Please watch an arcade gameplay video, you'll see the music was way more awesome.
Remember those controllers that had games in them and you just plugged the controller to tv to play? I had one of those and this was one of it's games.
There is a way to get infinite continues somewhere in the very first level. There is a hidden egg right near the ledge of the Goal at the end of the very first level, which you either need to shoot or jump around (can't quite remember). It contains an item which gives you infinite continues. As for the bar at the top, you need to keep eating fruit or else your health depletes and you die. Yeah, this game is insanely tough; I think I only got to the 3rd boss.
Got this and Adventure Island III on my shelf. Very fun, very challenging. I think I’ve only beat them once or twice each in all the years I’ve had them. Tempted to get an OG Game Genie and play through some old games now.
does anyone else think Ryu just loaded a save State during the edit instead of playing all the way back through those levels? This is why he's a professional; I do not have that kind of patience.
OHHHHH. Really? I played this on a clone console and from time to time I remember about this game. Now I find it on one of my most watched channels. That's awsome.
18:03 makes you laugh 'cause the fish gets revenge for the KO on the turn before, but then 18:15 makes you laugh even harder 'cause it's exact same spot where game over happened before 😂😂😂
I really think you’d like Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair, it’s like this but with a lot more. Funnily enough, Wonder Boy actually had their own version of Adventure Island too!
If you look for it, you'll notice your shots sometimes disappear before they hit the ground. Those spots have hidden eggs - if you jump in those spots, the hidden eggs will appear, which means extra powerups. The real benefit to this is that the fireballs are easier to get if you know where to look.
This was a spirit-crushing rental as a kid.

This is a Sega game called Wonderboy. It was released on the Sega Master System a year before Hudson bought the rights and released it on Nintendo changing the name to Adventure Island and the character.
This game. I remember playing it. Never went past the 2nd level and completely forgot about it. Until now. Gotta finish what my child self started.
You can find hidden eggs by firing your weapon. The weapon will vanish before hitting the ground. Jump on that spot to uncover hidden eggs.
This is my favorite to play as a kid due to the challenge and pace of the game.
Dude you're the best, around, nothing's gonna ever bring you down!
This game was brutal. I've never beaten the Second area
I only went till where ryu went. The hunger meter gets me most of the time man
I played this game a lot when I was a kid and I never beat it. Farthest I ever got was world 6, I think it was 6-2. I played it again as an adult on an emulator with save states just to get some closure.
i played the first 2 games for the NES quite a bit, and I felt this series was among the easiest games.
It's crazy how many secrets I still remember! I wasted so much time in this game and never beat it.
Ryu is every arcade mangers nigtmare 😂😂💙💙💙
I love that you have chosen this game! I tried to pass it when i was a child and i died at the last world.... i dropped it for like 10 years XD
DAMN! Childhood memories right here! Sat for hours on this game when it came out!!
"We got the pot bonus." :) I love the smirk on Ryu's face.
I remember playing this game when I was younger. It's not bad, but it is definitely hard. As for the thing you think is HP it's sort of HP but it drains of hunger which you use food to replenish making it more of a timer you can get a bonus on.
Definitely everyone's nostalgia
Never heard of this
Me neither.
The older bunch anyway. Good old days, I'm sure it was called something different though
I used to play this game a lot as a kid and yes it's tough and very long but still fun and a great challenge
There’s secrets place hidden in the level, somewhere you can shot and your shots are disappeared keep shot to go to the secret places
I had this game on the Sega Master System. It was called Adventure Boy in the UK.
It has noticeably different textures, music and sfx to this but the gameplay and levels are the same. I had a lot fun with it.
this game was my childhood, thanks to my dad for installing like 200 games from A to Z, never beaten none of the 3 games of Hudsons Adventure island
That must be how it felt to play Super Mario Bros for the first time
I have fond memories of Adventure Island 3. I always thought it was crazy hard, but this is even harder!
I swear I beat this game in childhood along with my elder brother....it was soooooo freaking hard we didn't sleep the whole night.... Lovely memories 😍
There was a time in my life where i have only few games available to play and this game is in the top 3 of that list.
I never finished this game because this game is too spooky and too difficult for little me, thanks for finishing this
Oh m'y God!
This was one of my favorites as a kid. You were struggling hard!
This game is my childhood. Side note: In 1990 my 40 year old mother beat this game - do with that what you will Ryu.
This game ate so many quarters, it became successful. I have no clue how people back then didn't see thru it.
I love how all these "extraordinarily hard games" are normal games that I played when I was like 6.
Oh gods, I remember playing the hell out of this game back in the early 90s.
Got this and Adventure Island III on my shelf. Very fun, very challenging. I think I’ve only beat them once or twice each in all the years I’ve had them.
Tempted to get an OG Game Genie and play through some old games now.
Best Game i played in my childhood.. Hey Ryu please do more streaming of this game.. i really love to see you playing
Ryu lighten up my days sometimes。this is one of those days。
That moment at 8:30 where Ryu holds up the cartridge and you realize he's playing an emulator 😁
Or he was doing the gameplay at a different time and it was just an intro.
I really like this serie ! Keep up the good work and thank you for the entertainment
does anyone else think Ryu just loaded a save State during the edit instead of playing all the way back through those levels? This is why he's a professional; I do not have that kind of patience.
ow boy, memories of the arcade version "Jungle Boy" from 1982, unforgiving but always full of people that game
OHHHHH. Really? I played this on a clone console and from time to time I remember about this game. Now I find it on one of my most watched channels. That's awsome.
18:03 makes you laugh 'cause the fish gets revenge for the KO on the turn before, but then 18:15 makes you laugh even harder 'cause it's exact same spot where game over happened before 😂😂😂
I loved this game as a kid. I rented it all the time. It has a relaxing atmosphere.
