It's made from wood, and is used to press down fabric after it has been ironed. This way there is less danger of scorching the fabric or stretching it out. The wood thing is called a "clapper."

It’s called a tailor’s clapper. It is used to permanently set a seam or crease after ironing. Quilters use them a lot.

É chamado de badalo de alfaiate. Ajuda a retirar a umidade de uma costura vaporizada e, quando colocado em uma costura após a prensagem, faz com que a costura fique bem plana
