  • From early settlers to the signers of Miami’s incorporation and beyond, Black people have had a significant role to play in the evolution of the Magic City. Additionally, immigrants from the Caribbean brought with them skills and knowledge, which proved critical to the city’s development and helped make Vizcaya what it is today.
Join us as the Black Archives and Vizcaya go LIVE to talk Black history in honor of Miami’s 125th anniversary on Wednesday, July 28, @ 2:00 p.m.

As a person who was born & raised in Miami, I've heard much here that I hadn't known prior. Thank you for sharing!

I am a descendant of the black incorporator Ulysses Grant Bell. I have information about he and his people if the Black Archive Foundation is interested. For starters, he was the son of a Union Soldier and free mulatto seamstress out of Greenville, NC. Ulysses went to Florida with 2 of his brothers General Pain(e) and Ashley Bell. He and one of his brothers worked as barbers and pool guys at the Royal Palm.
