- In this video Im going to show you how I made $5k a month using the Design Joy model. A skeptic at first I soon found that using the Design Joy Model was actually the system I had been looking for all along.
The lack of meetings, freedom and automation really helped me create amazing websites and tools for my clients. I hope this video helps you avoid some of the pitfalls that I encountered along the way.

You are the first person I've found so far testing out Brett's model. I'm trying to find simple automation methods to the onboarding and workflow. I really believe this model is future proof for the next 5/10 years minimum and have been testing it with a few clients of mind before actually marketing it. Thanks for the insight!!!!
You're welcome Mike! If you need help with the automation give me a shout.
Hey Harry! Great content, I love the transparency and that you're taking us along your journey. I recently watched a video from Chris Do interviewing the founder of DesignJoy. It is a great agency model. Wish you the best that it works out!
Thanks!
Thank you Harry for your transparency with your business model.
And thank you for your lovely comment. Its what keeps me going ! :)
Yessssir! You are going craaaaazy!
Hahaha many thanks Imed !
Really nice! also looking to get i this model. thanks for the video!
You should! It’s awesome!!
Check out my latest video to see me build it from scratch !
Nice one bro!!
What is the typical scope of these "unlimited requests"? Do you get requests for full Webflow websites that you can deliver in 72 hours?
No - you usually help the client break down a request into something smaller. For example a wireframed homepage would take me 48 hours to deliver. It's about communicating up front to set expectations, whilst always making sure you are delivering at a constant pace.
the project tracker, is that something you designed on your own, or is it an application you just useful on the internet?
great video by the way a lot of insights on where to start. thanks
I made it inside coda.io :) Ive got a load of free templates to help you get started as well if you're interested in building your own system: harrymckayroper.gumroad.com/
Great video , just I have one question , what was the name of the project tracker ? And where can we get something like that ? 😊
Not available yet but if you're comments gets enough likes I might release it! 👀
Welp I hope this isn't the limit because I'm actually hoping to use this model for about 500k a year.
Thanks for sharing! Could this business model be sustainable on the mid-long and long term? Especially if you want to go on vacation or an unforeseen circumstance. Would love to hear your take on it
Yes quite a common issue. Upfront communication with the client + a good relationship can help when you have an emergency... but I'm definitely for building this out beyond just yourself and having a team that you can lean on if you get stuck.
Final way to cover your bases is to have something in your contract and make sure your clients are aware that you're the only designer and things might pause one week due to sickness.
You can communicate that nicely in your onboarding !
how do i learn what you do?
Hey Harry! I truly value your transparency. I'm setting up an agency where I create and manage websites for professionals like therapists. While I handle everything, including hosting, I'm having a tough time marketing it and attracting new clients. Could you share any advice or tips? Your guidance would be hugely appreciated.
Hey! Great question. I've got a video coming out next to cover this topic.
I would dial down on that niche of yours "Therapists". Where do they hang out online? LinkedIn? Facebook groups?
Then you need to focus on their problems. Therapists probably want to book more clients.
So you could just start posting about how therapists can get more clients using a website and marketing. Dont make it too technical. Just make it detailed enough that they either follow you, reach out or keep you top of mind when they're ready to take action.
One example "How adding a book link to your site will increase conversions".
Remember marketing isnt a one message sprayed to thousands anymore. Its about turning up everyday, spreading your message, helping and always being top of mind for people.
We consume so much content these days its hard to remember that one post we made about tips!
Much easier to remember me as the guy to go to for websites instead.
@@HarryRoperMckay Wow IDK how I missed this, thanks for the informative reply. Will surely use the tips.

is there any reason you dont use trello for your client? i always ha dthe impression that had less friction as its so easy for none techs to use
Hi, repeating another's person question Do you also do that thing that DesignJoy do?, where you can pause the subscription and continue weeks or month after? How does this work with Stripe?
Hello! Yes ! You can use stripes no code billing portal to facilitate it. stripe.com/docs/customer-management/activate-no-code-customer-portal
Had trouble with rendering so no 4k quality this week. ;( Download the template here and give me your feedback: harrymckayroper.gumroad.com/l/clientdashboard
Hi Harry, gumroad wont send template when I put 0 on the pricing so that I can see and give some feedback!
@@adsasdasist Hello and thanks for letting me know ! I've updated the link !!
If still not working send me a DM with your email on twitter and I will send you a copy personally: twitter.com/Harry_Aldian
Well done! Are you using Trello?
Thanks - I use Coda.io!
How did you find your clients?
Networking on Discord!
So you use Notion for your project / design board?
It’s all Coda.io! :)
Great video!
How do clients state their request after paying for a subscription?
Thank you !
They are onboarded through an automated process. Afterwards they are instructed on to how add tasks to the board :)
@@HarryRoperMckay which platform is used for this onboarding process. I'm looking to starting my one man agency some day so I'm here to learn
@@funnies8772 coda.io with a bit of Zapier mixed in ⚡️ if you download the template you can see an example of the onboarding page i run each client through.
@@HarryRoperMckay Thank you for this information it was very helpful 👍
Sorry to bother you. I have another question. Let's say a client pays through gumroad or stripe etc. Does the automated message containing the link ( Coda onboarding) get sent to them automatically ?
What tool do you use to charge the clients automatically? Stripe? I’m curious about how to set that up.
Stripe with a subscription / payment link setup. Handles a lot of things like follow ups etc.
Also their card details are saved on file so you can easily upsell and charge extra services in the future.
@@HarryRoperMckay Do you also do that thing that DesignJoy do, where you can pause the subscription and continue weeks or month after? How does this work with Stripe?
Def got a sub from me!!
Thanks ! :)
Where do you find clients????
A number of places as mentioned in the video:
- TH-cam
- Discord
- Referrals
Are the tools used for automation and other things to handle clients free? Or paid?
Also 1 more question 😅, do you just provide we design service or other services like graphic design, card design, basically all type of designs that designjoy provides? Also is it possible to provide all those services
@@A8277. Depends on your setup but I use Coda which needs a paid plan to function fully with automations.
Its $12/m which isn't too big of a cost considering all of the cool things you can do with it!
In regards to your other question. I'm going to be niching down into landing pages as that seems to be my strong point.
I would suggest trying to keep things simple and get really good and know for just one service to start with. You can slowly branch out as you get better !

Hey do you live in Baires?
Will be back there in 2 days!
Watching this video infused optimism in me 🙏

Is your company UK baised and UK targeted or are you finding corporations with offices in Buenos Aires?
UK based but we work internationally. Mainly focusing on the US market.
@@HarryRoperMckay very nice. Too complicated for me to make those tax forms from the EU to US ..
