in the opening he was touching sara its the scene where he saved sara, actually in the light novel zanoba dont like the idea of a slave, he was actually hoping he can do it himself, theres no satisfaction of making other do what you wanted to do so badly, but he has too little amount of mana thats why he faints, and he's too strong for a delicate job.

One thing to note in LN, Zanova explained he wanted to give Julie his brother's name to establish a bond to protect her from his strength. Also "Fitz" reacted to Rudy turn a boys name into a girls name by adding "ette" to it (also the anime had the camera to Fitz back there

Rudeus had some reasons to not had gulit and moral anxiety.
It is because the child slave purchase was effectively "a child adoption" as he had no intent to treat the bought slave as a slave from the beginning.
While his reason to buy the child was purely self-interested one (his "personal desire" to help his disciple, Zanoba... no more, no less), he treated her as his disciple of magic and figurine production, and treated her well and kindly the same way he would treat his niece of a distant relative.
As a result, her well-being was tremensously improved, living in a much better environment than that of overwhelming majority of children in the MT world (and perhaps than that of many children in economically undeveloped countries of our real modern world) , and treated as a discple of Rudeus by people around her (instead of as a slave of Rudeus). People in the MT world don't use an honorifics like 'dono' (a medieval Japanese equivalent of 'sir') when they address a slave.
Since he thought he would let her leave him if she wanted once she got older enough to become a capable mage & doll maker craftwoman (which means she could make a living on her own without his and Zanoba's care), Rudeus had no reason to think he was going to do something wrong to her, harming her well-being and violating her human rights.
You dont usually feel gulity when the end result of your act will be beneficial to someone, even if the main motivation of the act is purely self-interested one.
If there is any moral issue worthy of debate regarding Rudeus's purchase of Julie, it is that Rudeus had her to engage a child labor with paymemt when she learnt enough earth magic spells to produce a doll.

This episode is a prime example that Rudeus decided to adopt a slightly more moral relativist approach to his life in a different world, instead of defending principles from his old life he is learning how to live (relativley speaking) a normal life by the societal norms of his current life. In his view, its better to do good things here and there with everything else he's worrying about when possible rather than starting a abolitionist rebellion.
    love y'all, take care

Interestingly, Paul has more similar morality, when it comes to slavery, to us. The guy knows the tragedy of slavery too well. Unlike Rudeus, he fights against Slavery-and had his men murdered because of it.

Nah, he should have left Julie to starve to death in that cage and die in a few days. /s
"rather than starting a abolitionist rebellion." - If he wants to put the lives of all his friends and family, and his own, in serious danger. That's a good idea. Where does he even start, he has no support, no connections - nothing. And of course, it would overtake his entire life, until he dies.
But yeah, he has enough issues dealing with his own problems. Almost killed himself twice in this very season. Nor is he powerful enough to change the culture of entire nations. Too used to cartoony OP protags that can do anything with no consequences and everything goes their way somehow in the end, not matter what they do.

@@HiddenStr3ngththat's because these new isekai think that's good story telling. This is why Mushoku Tebsei is considered the grandfather of isekai because it took years to right and was very popular. Many only took notes from this story and thought they too can sell some cheap imitation. With over powered MC that no matter what they do the women love him and some how the government doesn't fear him so they let them do what they want and it all works out in the end. No risk involved because somehow it will work out. When that isn't how life works. People mind their own business for self-preservation. To protect their love ones. If you are constantly risking your neck out there just to white knight you are actually seen as crazy. As not part of society. And when you are not part of society you are banished not praised. But all these other iseakis have go to far into fantasy to even seem believable or enjoyable to the audience. That's why the interesting at first but then fade with the other generic stories. Paul wasn't fighting slavery though. He was fighting to recover the specific people from Bueno Village and would rescue them from slavery because they were illegally forced into it. They were all free people of Asura, but when they teleported, they had no resources or documents. It would be easy for someone to claim they had debts or something and sell them into slavery. Paul was fighting to free them, but he didn't free others.
I think Rudy is taking a lot of shit about this incident, but there is nothing he can do. Also, Rudy has fought to free people in the past (that's why he attacked Paul's group at first), and they wiped out Gallus Cleaner's band. Changing the society will take a long time just like it did in our world.

There is no 'make figurine' spell to chant. Rudy usually makes a figure bit by bit. Creates the general form, then sculpts it bit by bit until its complete. That is a series of incantationless 'spells' that are each unique and improvised. The only way to make figures Rudy's way is to be able to do incantationless magic, AND be able to improvise 'spells', AND have a generous amount of mana because its very mana intensive work.

That is one of the things that they don't show in the anime. Roxy was his most perfect figure because he spent the most mana and time to do that. As he journey to where he is now it took him years of learning and figuring out how to better use his mana for it to be useful. Like how he learns rock throw to rock cannon to spinning cannon to bullet cannon to spinning bullet. It all takes time and him figuring out how better to use his power to his benefit. It isn't something he immediately knows. As he ages he starts to remember things from his past life that actually help him become a better mage and use mana more detail oriented. Like the Nuke he almost used on the dragon God. That was the only thing he can think for to win the fight. And it was only because he knew he was going to die anyway so he may as well take him with him. Just like how he remembered at that moment how the war ended for Japan.

It's short, only 23 episodes, but is absolutely incredible, and has one of the best soundtracks of any anime! It is also a mecha/political show like Code Geass, so it would be perfect!

  • @-Bill.
    @-Bill. ปีที่แล้ว +4

They kinda need a child in order to have them make figurines because Rudy needs to teach them incantationless magic for it to work. Rudy sculpts by essentially materializing earth like he would for his "earth bullet" spell but setting the speed to zero and refining the shape to whatever he wants. People who have already learned magic find it impossible to learn later, as even Roxy, who is very exceptional, has only succeeded in abbreviating the spells after all these years of trying.
It kinda sucks about Julie being a slave but that's unfortunately that is this world, and Rudy can't change it. Rudy will stop slavers when he can. He initially attacked Paul's group, thinking they were kidnapping that kid, and of course, they wiped out the slavers stealing the beast girls, but as for the institution of slavery, he doesn't have the power. Even his royal friends like Ariel and Zanoba wouldn't be able to change it. Ending slavery will take many, many long years of many people's work, just like it did in our world. Rudy was probably hiding his feelings about it a bit because he's seen it his entire life in this world and was speaking to people who have never heard of anything else although you can tell that Fitz didn't like it. Julie will grow up educated and working to make art for a prince using a magic that only 2 others can use that we know about. Zanoba is a bit perverted but only about figures, he isn't like his brother Pax.
It's actually really touching that Zanoba wanted to name her after his brother Julius, as he loved his brother and truly accidently tore his head off because of his super strength. That's why he is known as Zanoba, the Decapitator Prince.

The young man was not refusing, he was willing but inexperienced and feeling too much... which is why Elinalize is there on the first place
The curse weakens her until she dies, but she needs action once a week or so, and it would take like two weeks to weaken her and maybe a month to kill her, everything else is her choice
Teleportation is taboo, because the demon god Laplace used teleportation to set up bases on human territory, like that cave where they fought the snow drakes, the mana calamity is completely unprecedented on scale and type
*SlaveMart, for all your service needs, doubling as orphanage and prison*
"True slavery is that all species can be enslaved" i find that funny because thats almost a word for word line on Overlord, "Death is the equality that comes for all," i would like to see you two reacting to that one, it gets pretty fun
On the novel Rudeus was very uncomfortable with slavery, but its narrated on first person and we get to hear his thoughts on everything, so it doesnt feel strange to hear his opinions, but in anime the monologue is much fewer, so it would have been a copout to have him showing dislike of slavery and buying a slave anyways
Yes, Zanoba has no sex drive, and has learned to not hurt people, plus, he has a large place and a maid, that with being a prince
And yes again, the beast kids were illegally captured, so they could free them by force, but legal slaves need due process or the government will intervene
I really hope we get a full Silphy episode, to show why she is acting this way, on season 1 i expected them to make a whole Eris point of view, but they cut it short to a single scene, thats why i dont know how much time will be dedicated to Silphy's point of view, but at the pacing they are going there is enough material for that
There is no spell for making figurines, Rudeus casts a regular rock bullet spell, and then uses incantationless magic to modify it
Spell modification is the strongest area of incantationless magic, but the incantation helps to shoot magic on automatic even under distress, so its not a very immediate superiority, a maxed mana pool and conctant training are the things that make incantationless magic strong

I would love a Fittz episode. You supposed to see her react to Rudy changing Juliettes name because that's what he did to her when Rudy figured out she wasn't a boy. Instead they didn't show that. Even the story sometimes to me felt it was too much about Rudy but the anime and manga lack the monolog to even consider it a Rudy story so they should take more liberty in showing more of the other characters and their thoughts. Which now that you mention it, overlord also has that where you want more information on the other characters then you do the MC. I too would like to see them react to it. But the story is written better in Overlord too because it isn't just an Ains story like this one is about Rudy.

This world has two kinds of slavery. The first being captives, historically filled via war captives, but given the current lack of major wars the is a profitable illegal trade in kippaning for it. Another of those caught up in the displacement disaster ended up in slavery. (When Rudy met up with Paul, Paul was in the process of freeing as many as he could). Then you have the type practed in Raona, Depth Slavery. Julie's parents sold themselves and Julie in slavery to pay off the debt. Note the law allow for a slave to to repay the debt to by themselves out out slavery, and Rudy and Zanova are teaching Julie a highly lucrative trade.

It isn't only that. He knows how it is to want to die and not be able to do it. In a way it takes courage to off yourself and he knows how many years he wasted not being able to. And he specifically ask that question to her because even if she was brought she would only be an empty doll doing what the master tells her. Which would be years of pain where she would later reflect and wish she had took Rudy's offer of death.
That's why Rudy brought her when she was at least able to say she doesn't want to die which is a start to something more. She woke up there.
What annoys me the most when people complain about slavery in stories, is that those who do never been in a horrible living situation. You can't just tell your family not do beat you and use drugs otherwise you get more beatings. You can't just tell your neighbors not steal when that's what they want to do or even have to because now they age going to rob you. It paints a target on your back when you want to be a white knight with no actual power.
Rudy didn't have the money to by her Zeno did. The government allows this because they is always a demand. Even today slavery exist in the trafficking of migrates to work for rich land owners or factory owners so you just save everyone. Sometimes it is better to mind your business and just do what you can do to make the world a bit better.
Too many people see themselves as all powerful and all knowing with the ability to do anything. And that is just not possible. You have a family to protect if you get involved they get involved. You have a job that pays bills if you speak out you no longer have that job that helps pay them. Sometimes it is not you doing the most horrible of things but just biting you tounge in order to survive. People don't realize these things and just put their nose in it.

In the LN, he did encounter a worse slave market on his travels. In the case of the beast-children, they were not already in the slave system... they had been kidnapped and in the process of being sold to slavers. Once they are considered slaves... it is a felony to 'steal' them and you have to live as an outlaw if you are doing that (which was effectively what Paul was doing for the Fittoa families that had been enslaved following the teleportation incident).
Julie would have just died in misery if they hadn't bought her. I don't know if her parents had a choice... slavery is effectively the "debtors prison" in this world. So on one hand... Rudeus & co. saved one little girl through the only legal (and, under the circumstances, remotely reasonable) means possible. But in so doing, they fed the beast that was partly responsible for her being in that situation. It is a very uncomfortable compromise. (Of which we have many in our own culture, even today.)

Somewhat short context post this time. Normally I write scene by scene, but I’m about to be hit by a hurricane so I’m in a bit of a rush.
    1) Zanoba is very protective of Rudeus and very subservient to him out of sincere respect. His desire to learn doll making is a large part of that. During the mini montage where he tries to conjure then carve a doll, it represents a significant period of time, and Zanoba literally exhausts himself to near death. In the novels, it is explicitly noted that he would try casting until all his mana was exhausted, then he would get up and do it over and over, not eating or sleeping. The man is dedicated.
    2) A major skipped scene in the slave market demonstrates how protective of Rudeus he is. A sales person disrespects Rudy by ignoring him and addressing Zanoba instead, and Zanoba throttles him and shrugs off all the guards in there before Rudy can calm him down and get the guards to back off. Also of note is that Fitz is ready to fight too.
    3) Every slave in the market is completely nude for inspection. They toned it down in the adaptation. The two you see that Fitz looks at are combat slaves. There are several types of slaves, and not all of them make sense. In the novel, when Fitz makes her size comment, Rudy thought she was talking about the endowment of the female slave. This was obviously not the case.
    4) The adaptation made the strange choice not to include the inner monologue of Rudeus. In short, he doesn’t like slavery, and hates the market, but has to accept it as it is, at least in Ranoa, both legal and sanctioned. It is not well regulated, though. If Rudy were to upset the apple cart by smashing the place and freeing the slaves, he would become a criminal in the eyes of the State, and nobody could protect him. This leads back to Genos saying that anything off the school grounds was his own responsibility.
    5) Juliet is a dwarf, meaning she is from the millis continent, deep in the great forest. She speaks Beast God, which is one of four languages that Rudeus speaks: Human, Beast God, Fighting God, and Demon God.

I wouldn't say dedicated, I would saw obsessive. Because it is something that has caused him a lot of pain and the fact he doesn't eat or drink because of it makes it an obsession. I would say he is dedicated to Rudy with all his might because of that obsession of dolls.
Not only that Zanoba states to Rudy how much better the slave market is there because back home it is worse. And if I remember correctly that's because of how better care and selection they have there as opposed to where he comes from where it is just a farmer off the street that can't pay a debt or some criminal.

Oh boy. I’ve been waiting and dreading for this episode. I was wondering how they would adapt this, and they unfortunately fell short of what I felt in the novel. They also cornered themselves since they cut Rudeus’ monologues on his opinions on slavery, which is distaste but mixed with a “it can’t be helped, it’s part of this world and this world’s entire systems.”
Rudeus can try to fight it, like Paul, but he’ll end up like Paul, his comrades killed by the state for the mere act of saving slaves. In fact, if Rudeus burns this particular market here, entire kingdoms will hunt him down-and he is not immortal. One very skilled swordsman or a world-power can take him down. He’s also going to worsen the poverty in whichever area that is because of how closely link slavery is to their economics.
Not justifying it, everyone knows slavery is bad. But, in their world, this is unfortunately the state of things. It is fucked in all possible aspects. Rudeus is also the last character we should expect some moral action from. While he is developing, he is also a mix of old-world and new-world moral systems. A moral relativist. Rifujin even said in an interview that while Rudy doesn’t particularly like it, he doesn’t impose his own self of justice on a culture he doesn’t understand.
I do have a problem with how this episode feels though. In the novel, it is clear that Rudeus takes notice of the conditions of the slaves. Rifujin went in excruciating detail as Rudeus walks around the slave market. He doesn’t say anything, but he does observe it. The director could’ve just made it clear by a closeup to Rudeus’ eyes or face, then the sad state of the slaves. Essentially, this would keep going until they meet Julie, which is the straw to break the camel’s back. Here is a slave so worse off, so unbelievably beaten that Rudeus thought that it would be a mercy to kill her, right then and there. The anime wasn’t able to portray how broken Julie actually was. She was completely neglected, beaten, abused. So, even though Rudy was just supposed to just accompany Zanoba, he interfered, talking to the girl in her language. He didn’t want to see her like this. He genuinely thinks that killing her would be a better mercy than forcing her into doing what she doesn’t want to do as a slave. He genuinely thinks that maybe there’s a chance that she could reincarnate and have a better life in her second one. It’s a scary thought, but it is very much Rudeus’. Because of this, he never pretentiously thought that him buying her will “save” her. He thought that he can buy her clothes, food, and the like, but it will never be “salvation”. For that, Julie needs to choose to live by her own terms, herself. So, he gave her the ultimatum. Julie, after moments of silence, said she didn’t want to die. To Rudy, that was enough for him to know that Julie, unlike his previous self, has still the drive to fight for happiness in her life. That’s all that mattered. Then, he left. HE DIDN’T BUY JULIE BTW, that’s a very weird anime implication. Zanoba bought Julie. Rudeus was literally just there to give her a way out. It was a very dark scene.
I am quite sad that the novels were butchered in this episode, but I do hope you don’t judge the writer because he did really portray this scene better.

@@AnimeDateNight I don't really know why they didn't. This is my personal bias and thoughts, but I think it's the director change. I'm quite confident the passionate old director would've caught the author's intention there. He's really good at knowing which piece of monologues to put, which to cut, which to show, which to tell. This current director... lacks that. And so, when very sensitive scenes like these are being tackled, it feels very wrong.
It's kind of sad since this really shows more about Rudy and his mindset, especially the part about killing a child, thinking they could just reincarnate and have a better life. It has a lot of depth and themes about the characters and the world. It was just executed poorly in the adaptation.

The episode did have some of what you mentioned, but quite thin. It could have used some internal monologue, it did feel a bit jarring to me as well, but not a lot. Just a couple of lines. Not going in too much detail. To me it was still pretty easy to infer the gist of it.

@@HiddenStr3ngth that is true. That further complicates it then. The first season had a lot of cut content, but, in retrospect, the changes were pretty good. As a reader, I had complaints, but not as many as I had this season. I wonder if it's really all time and budget constraints then

@@kristoffer2250I feel if they would have spent more time on this it would only have been worse. Like how all the slaves are supposed to be naked and not even a hint of cloth because that's how you buy slaves you have to know what you are buy and if they will die or have sicknesses.
If they would have shown more of what actually was going on and they probably would be censored and this was just a way they certain rating or knowing that others networks would drop it. Like how funanimation foolishly bought that anime with sleeping with different species and races only to stop showing it because it was too risqué. forcing people to pirate. Which is why sometimes blood is censored because they know it still has to sell and if they go too far into it they can get screwed in the long run.
You have the best explanation those this series tho and more people should read it. The story was great and the anime unfortunately can't be because of sensitive issues that are harder to animate without bigger backlash. I knew from the start it would be more tamed when there was less monologs of Rudy. Because the story has more depression in the story. And anime is supposed to be more entertaining.

On Elinalise : The curse is not the only reason of her highly promiscuous sex life. She genuinely enjoys having sex with many men as she has very strong sex drive.
This is one of the lines by her which the anime adaptation skipped. (She said it when she explained to Rudeus about the curse on their journey to the Ranoa University of Magic)
""" but it seemed Elinalise didn’t feel bitter about it at all. “I love sex, so even if I wasn’t cursed, I’d be doing much the same,” she’d said. """ (chapter 2, volume 8)

It seems you censored yourself with the thought of Rudy buying a slave. It is disappointing you feel that way against Rudy when Fitts came up with the idea. And Rudy highly respects Fitts. Sometimes the means justify the ends. One cannot save the world on morals alone. And even protesting usually does the opposite for your cause. Just let that sink in.

Nobody in that slave market has parents or loved one. As soon as you are sold into it all those rights are gone. Some kids are sold by they parents to make ends me. Some kids sell themselves off just so the parents don't get imprison for not paying taxes. If you have a huge debt you have no choice but to be a slave. That's why so many people struggle. It was why Rudy was hated on at the start of this season. Nobles live life of comfort and everyone else struggles day to day. It is not noble for Rudy to be taken life easily when he is out in the field with the powerless.
If Rudy was to become Paul and save slaves so many people would be after him and hate him. And if you remember that right before he got to this town. Rudy fake smiles because he doesn't want people hating him. It is too hard for him to move forward if he believes the world is out to get him. That's why he minds his own business here. He already suffered and had many people hating him in his old life.
As opposed to Paul. Paul wanted to find his family and now many of his comrades are dead some governments are out for his head. His other comrades that left him hate him for the things he has done. Like letting his friends die. Which is even more amazing that three of his old guild mates even helped him. Because they all hated his guts for everything he has done. And most of that is because of Rudy. Rudy made Roxy feel inferior about herself that she sets out on a journey to find him. With the help of Pauls old mates. Geese meeting Rudy help him make more interesting decisions. Elinalise was just enjoying life with a bit of wanting to help Paul but it was Rudy that help her to realize just how petty it was to hold a grudge against Paul because then she would have never met Rudy. She loves Rudy which is something she hasn't done in a while. Sex and love are not the same thing. Enjoying life and actually loving life are not the same thing.

Take it easy dude. This is a failing on the anime's part. They aren't LN readers. They're missing context.

@@Amaterasu77777 while I do believe that's true to some extent. I watch their other videos. Code Geass doesn't come from a light novel and they too show signs of stubbornness that sometimes disappoints. It isn't to say I don't like them. Otherwise I wouldn't watch them. I watched a lot of reactors and they were they the first one I sub to because I like them. But I can still be disappointed too. It won't stop me from watching them either. It is more normal for them to act the way they do because of who they are. Just like an agnsty teen may seem stubborn when they don't understand the other side. They are stubborn because they can only see the side of a morally high adult. Neither are wrong in their minds. That's why I don't fault them. I'm just disappointed they censored themselves but also they that they even had that notion to begun with.

Not to justify of course, but slavery is such a big part of that society I doubt Rudy can do much (agreed that he should not be that comfortable tho) Remember Eris was almost sold to slavery in the first episodes during the fake kidnapping and how the beast tribes are always getting children kidnapped for slavery and how Eris family is a big buyer for beast people servants.
