The low popularity is probably because it is hard to play, needs well made ground and is dangerous. Here in india, mostly north indians play this game (mainly from punjab state). My cousin played this on state level and got his leg cracked.
I play hockey in the uk and we played a game against a team of only indians and let me tell you... their objective is to hurt you. This one guy put a hole in my leg with his stick I got very lucky not getting seriouly injured but my leg has a dent in it and a scar months later

It was a good game we won 4 - 1 my last goal was legendary, there was a defender, I dragged right and then quickly dragged the ball left, the defender lost his balance and I scored I went up to him and I was like "You alright?" Everyone was cheering (if I recorded it, it would be awesome)
I got tomahawked in the face once with the ball, we were playing U12 shield he hit it right below my eye, for a second I thought I was blind I touched the place where I got hit I was fucking crying

I have played for 7-8 years and have 0 back problems
been playing for nearly 10 years and i am only 17 and after a game my back start to ache but that may not be solely due to hockey
after 24 years my back is done. Artritis. I`m 30 but 2m01. my stick was a 38.5 inch but those were the biggest ones. I`m sad i had to quit
