    Of the three I've seen, yours is the only one that suggests the need for a first aid kit in your kit! Kudos!

    I've just ordered one of these to replace my Lowepro that finally succumbed to wear and tear yesterday in the forest. It’s a big investment for me being a retired pensioner on a limited income so I really hope it lasts at least five years. Thanks for the vid.

    First off, Nick, I appreciate that you're not sponsored or supported by gear companies. Photogs who are sponsored or tag every post with the gear they use have ZERO credibility when they review those products. Ian, I appreciate that you're weighing in and responding to posts.
    Regarding the bag(s), it's only a matter of time (probably not much) before you take my money. Looks sweet. Lot's of great features. I have many FStop bags, but there are enough improvements here that are hard to resist. First, and biggest is the roll top. I LOVE this, especially with the access zipper. Could even be a little taller, in my opinion. I hate zipper lids that prohibit any expansion.
    Personally, I always use an Fstop tripod bag, (both for carrying tripods and stuffing other gear when needed) attached to both sides. Happy to see that it looks like those will still work well on these Shimoda bags. I'm always surprised not to see many other people using them. They weigh little, and Keep your tripod incognito and protected, and are good for storage, light stands, etc. They are excellent, and Shimoda would do well to implement something similar.
    It's nice that zippers are splash proof, but the Main compartment zipper, which houses the expensive / delicate stuff, is not. Surely there must be a way to protect this zipper too.
    Thanks for the review, Nick

      HI thanks for nice good comments. I think 2 things I can comment on,..
      RE: Sponsored photogs. Speaking for Shimoda, we don't sponsor people who don't like our gear. I understand your perspective, but most of the guys we work with, use our bags because they want to. I am fairly sure they use our bag because they work for them. So to say they have ZERO credibility, I think is a bit over stated. IMO. From my perspective these are some of the best photogs on the planet who have personally helped develop the product. I think they are just as credible as anyone. (At least in our camp)
      RE: Zippers: We can't use water-resistant zippers on the rear access because of the sharp corners. It will wear the the PU coating and eventually break. As it is we use number 10 size because the are the most robust, even the smaller of same family break down with that much use and sharp corners. Zippers are best used when straight.
      Thanks again for the good words and I appreciate the tripod bag remarks, it's alway been a product I liked and always felt was under appreciated. Ian

    Really wish they would make this bag in a 20 liter daybag.... I have the hardest time finding a "comfortable" bag that carries 1 mirrorless body and 2 lenses. There are bags that do it...but none that are quality or of professional features. just cheapos that always fail. Im not a youtuber so minimal gear needed for a day hike up a trail to a falls. Tenba made their Solstice bags but they seem to not carry a tripod in an efficient way like the Shimoda. the colors are spot on...so since they seem to listen to you... hit em up with we need an 18-20 liter version for the whiny guy! Awesome review as always Nick.

      It's definitely something I have thought about, unfortunately we were just not ready to do it yet. Need to sort through some design adjustments first. It requires a structural change (from these) and I need to work that out better.

    • @ShimodaDesigns
      @ShimodaDesigns 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Prices rarely go down for materials used in backpacks (and almost everything else). When pricing increases its because of materials and the technicality of the construction, manufacturing process and the complications of the logistics involved. With most packs, you really do get what you pay for. When something is cheap... there is reason and its not because the company is run by a bunch of nice guys who want you to save your money... :)

      @@ShimodaDesigns I think these bags should be more padded, I mean exterior, this is a main reason right now why I'm not hitting place order button. I'm not sure, got feeling that it will not give me enough protection from impacts. Unlike for example Vanguard alta sky 53 or similar, it seems to me that it lacks at least some kind of stiffness.

    Great review and a really nice bag. I love the roll-top option, which allows you to pack any extra gear, say coat, gloves, waterproofs etc when needed and is rolled up and out of the way when not in use, but still accessible/usable via the zip!..great idea.
    It looks very durable and very good build quality and also a good looking bag, pretty slick imo.
    I'm definitely considering getting one, mainly for landscape/woodland photography and I think the 30L will be ample for my needs and a days ramble out in the field...oh, and the fact that it's pretty much waterproof and waterproof zips is a major plus.

I was eyeing and am on the fence about the 70L myself only due to the fact that it accepts the new DV ICU's - trying to find a better bag to carry an 8x10 / holders / lenses into the field more comfortably - so kind of cool they now have an option. But, that 50L you showed looks really nice for just doing the normal digital haul.

      Thanks for responding to my shocking experience on Shimoda's newest range of action bags, I can assure you my X50 has not lasted well on my first few seascape photography outings and it's a shame Shimoda chose to use a poorer material on the base of the bag the actual area where most abrasion occurs. If they had continued with the coated ripstop reinforced nylon as used over their ranges to date this weakness would probably never has come to light. They claim the base is newly reinforced, but this is with an inferior finish to the bags main material. It won't last like the rest of the bag and damage has occurred very quickly on mine. I am upset as this bag was at the top end of my budget, and I haven't yet been able to afford the additional cost of the insert. I don't get given free products unfortunately to write glittering reviews so I can boost sales. P.S. I'm no gear hater, rather the contrary I was recommended the Shimoda range by a friend who had the earlier bag, but I can see you will buy into a brand regardless, good luck with yours.

  • @MarkRomine
    @MarkRomine 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I purchased one of their bags earlier this year based upon your fine review and the good reviews of several other photographers and now I can say I too love mine. But I will say that their customer service is poor at best. I had a few pre-order questions that I tried to get answers to. I tried e-mailing and never got a response. I called the CS number on their website and left voice messages and never got a return call. Somehow I found out that the MAC Group was filling their orders for them so I called them but I could not get anyone to talk to there either. This was all very frustrating because I was leaving for a trip to Europe and I had these pre-order questions so I just ended up buying more ICUs than I needed and sending back the rest before leaving on my trip. Again, a good product but bad CS.

      @ShimodaDesigns 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark, sorry to hear about your experience. We are a unique brand where we are not a stand alone operation, we share resources with numerous other brands. This can lead to a bit of a watered down CS experience some times. But, sharing resources allows me to put more resources in product developed and moving the brand forward. I put my personal email out in many places and most of the CS emails we get come directly to me - you are always welcome to try me at ian@shimodadesigns.com - Ian

    • @MarkRomine
      @MarkRomine 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shimoda Designs thank you Ian. At this time I have no further questions and I’m enjoying my pack! At the time it was extremely frustrating because I could not find the answer on the Shimoda website. Since I had travel reservations already set I had to over purchase and then return what would not fit because I did not know what size(s) of Core Units would fit in the Explorer 30 and I needed them for a trip to Europe. So it cost me lots of time and unnecessary shipping fees. The animated Gif for the Explorer 30 on the product page would probably have answered my question if it rotated slower and was a larger size so that I could have studied it more closely.

    The ONLY thing I'm not crazy about with the Explore 60 (first generation large Shimoda bag) is that you have to remove the frame in order for it to be "carry on" size. It looks like this X 50 is just smaller enough to be a carry on? Would love to know your experience with that, Nick.

    I was so not Down on the Rolltop.....Until I saw the zipper access..SOld! very cool.. I had the 40L and now the 60L (much improved), but like the 40L being a big bag was so tiny for bulking jackets etc... the Rolltop on all sizes is a simple and great solution.The Zip out bags or whatever they are called- haven't been a fan, was actually just hoping to see a dedicated side pockets- those are actually just useful (shimoda is kinda just overthinking that part of the bag imho). Overall looks like a great gen 2.

      I wish I'd chosen the 60 over the 40 myself, not an issue in the summer but when the weather gets colder and you need to stow that heavy jacket while exerting yourself that extra room is needed. On the other hand I went with the 40 to be carry-on compliant, not sure the 60 is, the 50 though seems to be the best solution with the expandable top portion.

    • @ShimodaDesigns

      Hi, biased insider info but, when the bag is on the left shoulder tends to slip off easier and create an awkward body position try to keep it in place. When its on your right shoulder, your right elbow pinches the bag keeping it place. This issue increases with more weight. So thats why its on the right. - Ian

    Thanks, Nick. I have had the X30 for about 20 months now. I love it. Had the earlier Shimoda bag. Changed it out for the Atlas Athlete (which I now need to sell) which had a lot of features I preferred over the original Shimoda bag - but I struggled a bit with the fit. With this new bag Shimoda has addressed all those features and made a number of other improvements and the fit is awesome. One question, do you find that accessory pouch useful - that one hanging on the outside. I ordered it with my kit but never received it. I'm wondering if I should cancel it or press them on it. Oh, and I accidentally ordered a set of ICU dividers but I mistakenly ordered the DSLR dividers, not the "mirrorless" size. They don't work with my mirrorless ICU and the shipping to return them is as much as the price. So I wouldn't save any money sending them back. Do you want them? Ha ha! Oh, and it is hilarious that the F4 crew all have the Shimoda bags in green.

    Interesting that you said this 50 seems roomier than the old 60, I currently own the 40 and find in the winter it's a bit small for jackets and extra clothes, in many ways wish I'd gotten the 60. I"m wondering how big the 70 really is, from your review it seems it's enormous. I'm curious if they beefed up the buckle some, I found the waist buckle to seem flimsy and while it hasn't broken yet would prefer something heavier duty like those on my backpacks which are also easier to buckle. It's great to see these companies listening to us and making revisions accordingly.

    • @NickPage
      @NickPage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know Adam Gibbs has the 70, I suspect he will do some kind of review on it and give you an idea of size

    • @ShimodaDesigns
      @ShimodaDesigns 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Consider the buckle beefed up. Its why we will make a new Belt Booster to fit Action X (as Nick mention in the video). I may have made the mistake of not using precise liter naming with the Explore series, there is a bit of tolerance in the numerical naming. The X50 is about the same size as the 60. You can max the 50 at 57L and bring it down to a very small amount (much less than 50) with the compression straps.

  • @Jantonvid
    @Jantonvid 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you feel the straps are any different comfort wise to the original straps? Are they different at all in construction as in the way that they curve? How about the straps on the 70 L are they more comfortable?

    • @NickPage
      @NickPage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The straps are pretty much identical from the original, with the exception of the larger pockets and the ones designed for women. The ones on the 70 L I believe are the same straps as the smaller bags

    Seems a great bag. Just a shame they don’t do a wildlife long lens version as the weight, rugged style and space for waterproofs would seem perfect but unless I am missing something, the large DSLR cube is too small for even a 400 mm f2.8 (it’s just long enough for the lens off the camera but it’s not deep enough for the lens diameter)
