Americas Longest Passenger Train, Street Running! Amtrak Auto Train In Ashland Virginia On CSX Main

- At times, this is the Worlds Longest Passenger Train! I caught it street running in Ashland, Virginia on the CSX main line. Amtrak Auto Train has double decker passenger cars and double decker auto racks. It runs from Lorton, Virginia to Sanford, Florida a total of 855 miles. These are the only 2 train stations in America that you can put your vehicle on the train and ride the train. I filmed it street running with CSX freight trains and a few more Amtrak trains, including one that arrived and departed in the rain. Other railfans including Millenniumforce were here also. I like this town with the tracks right in the middle of the road. You can actually drive right next to a train. Filmed September 25, 2018CE. Thanks for watching! I live in Northeastern Indiana, but I grew up in Richmond, VA which is near Ashland. My aunt had a farm near Ashland. My mother and I used to take trains to and from Ashland to visit my aunt in the summertime. The tracks in Ashland are the old Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac lines of Civil War fame. They are the main North/South rail lines on the East Coast. We used to board trains from the station that was right by the tracks in the middle of town. I don't know if the station is still there. One of my many early memories of these tracks was a time when I saw some diesels pulling a line of rusting steam engines to meet their fate. This video brings back many railroad memories. Thank you for that.

Great video, love the Passenger Cars. My wife and I have taken the Amtrak from Connellsville Pennsylvania to Harper's Ferry West Virginia a few times. At that time, due to track conditions, there were slow areas in travelling (track maintenance going on), but it would speed up nicely much of the time. But we were going to stay at the HillTop Hotel in Harper's Ferry (the Hotel is now gone), so even the slower moments were just more time on the train, what's to complain? The food was great, in the dining car, we were seated with strangers, after all, it's not a restaurant. But again, the food was worth it. The observation car was full length, and at night, when there wasn't much to see, in the observation car, they'd play movies, and they seemed like recently released ones, or ones still in the theater. Fun stuff. Still figuring to go to Reno Nevada one day on the Amtrak, we have relatives there. Thanks again, great show.

Wife's account and not her opinions Awesome to see this we moved to Florida but we were from Rappahannock County VA west of Fredericksburg and spent many days in Ashland just to see the street running your video brought back many happy memories love your content I grew up in Chicago and remember Milwaukee Road and Chicago Northwestern IC North Shore South Shore and many now merged or defunked railways thank you for your hard work really appreciate it oh almost forgot the SP Daylight when it was the Freedom Train in 1976 was unforgetable

Longest passenger train in the UK is the overnight sleeper train from London Euston to Inverness/Fort William/Aberdeen. It leaves Euston with 16 coaches and splits into three portions in Edinburgh.
Cool video Brian. I believe Virtual Railfan has cameras set up in Adhland VA and you can see how often the freights and Amtrak pass by during the course of the day.
Mary and I rode the Amtrak from Florence SC to Richmond VA. Took a cab to Ashland, because of train scheduling, and stayed at the Inn in behind the train station. Our first and as yet only train travel/fanning trip. Cant say I'm in love with the travel but we did enjoy a lot of it. Ashland was a hoot!

Ashland sure is a hot spot for trains. The auto train must be very successful with a consist like that. Here in the Poconos we have nothing. It used to be a big rail hub, but not anymore.

Well, this is a first, a single leveled Amtrak train.. with the baggage car at the end instead of behind the locomotive at 4:55.

Florida trains often have the baggage car on the rear when heading North. And as Hialeah was the maintenance base for them when new, there often were more than one baggage car on a train.
As a regular on the Ashland webcam, I can fill you in on all the Amtrak trains:
Long Distance:
Auto Train
Palmetto
Silver Star (nicknamed Silver Starvation due to its lack of a dining car)
Silver Meteor
All these trains do not stop in Ashland
Northeast Regional, which do stop in Ashland:
3 Northbound and 1 Southbound in the morning
3 Southbound and 1 Northbound in the evening
The evening northbound I've nicknamed "The Midnight Train" as it arrives in Boston after Midnight, and is usually the last Northeast Regional of the night.
Also, the 'regulars' of the Ashland webcam have a daily 'wager' on the consist of Amtrak #53, the Southbound Auto Train. Winner gets a virtual cookie. The longest the train can be is 3/17/33, 3 locomotives, 17 superliners, 33 auto racks. Links to webcam:

Looks like the "take your car, too!" train that runs between DC and Florida. There's a good video on YT that shows how they load cars onto the train cars.

Nice video of railroad street running but I wish it was the old school railroad street running where the rails are embedded in the tracks without the roadbed all the way out. But this is still great and love all of the Amtrak passenger trains, really cool.

If those tracks are active, I would not advise to park your vehicle in that driveway. Maybe those rails were taken out of service a while ago.
Your comment reminded me of a 'novelty' song popular in 1950's or 60's titled "The Railroad Runs Through the Middle of the House". Can't remember the singer though, but was hilarious to kids in those days.

However, near the end...your youthful assistant announcing “There’s more” ....just goes to show that you also need a tripod too...so you can make announcements without the ‘floating, detached head’ effect that the ‘selfie’ produces! We’d get a complete view of Jawtooth then. I wish I could join you on your trips...they’re great....but my travelling days are over. Keep up your excellent work...much appreciated! Why are passenger engines different than the ones used for freight?
@@mikepottle6647 Passenger engines are geared to run at high speeds. For example, 79-110 mph. Freight trains run at slower speeds such as 35-65 mph.
There different becuase passenger trains carry people and fright trains carry goods like food and logs

We did see the juice train but they have combined the juice cars in with other trains now. No more dedicated juice trains thanks to Precision Railroading

The train that stopped at Ashland @12:30 looked like all the cars were empty. How sad. :(
There used to be an Amtrak Auto Train from Louisville, Kentucky to Florida we took back in the early 70s to go to Disney World when it first opened.
This isn’t street running it’s 2 tracks between 2 roads lol
Wrongo-pal; this is a divided highway; the track pair (two tracks) eat the median strip - which is NOT a block wide. This track runs north of Lorton (where the Auto-Train starts) all the way to Washington, DC (where the Carolinian starts). Along the way, it passes through the old RFP Intermodal in Arlington, VA (south of Amazon HQ2). When Norfolk Southern was created, the RFP Intermodal was declared surplus and became a real estate play. (If you're curious, take a drive alone US 1 between HQ2 and the northern city limits of Alexandria; most of this was the site of RFP Intermodal and the associated switching yard.
I take it they don't have a " U Turn" problem in Ashland with those trains in the middle of a dual carriage way, love that live action as does the local folks !

Funnily enough I’ve been looking in on the Ashland live cams recently on Virtual Railfan’s TH-cam channel. What a great railfanning place and Jaw Tooth - this is a great video - very well done. The filming of the night time freight in the crossing street lights - looks great. Really enjoyed it.
Wow. You should have checked it out pre SCL early 60s. RF&P. Trains every 10 minutes during the winter. Multiple sections of Champion,Florida Special ,Silver Meteror,Star ,freights. It was a train watchers paradise.

It is very busy Jaw Tooth! I live ten minutes away from Emporia in North Carolina and I live by that same line. It’s hardly a dull moment.

First time seeing eighteen Superliners on the AT. I had read a few years ago (TRAINS, 1/2015) that Amtrak had upgraded the A-T's Superliners with LED lighting to save power so the HEP could accomodate a 17th car. Must've saved more power than I initially heard.
This is right after I completed a project to retrofit my O-Gauge Superliners with LED lights so I could run a model of this train--at the time, 9 Superliners and 12 autoracks--but now I have enough equipment to run 10-12 Superliners and 21 autoracks. After five years, I still have the only video on TH-cam of a model Amtrak Auto-Train in O-Gauge :)
There have been days in the winter when they exceeded that number. Longest one I've been on had a total of 45 cars. And had 3 locos. We did not waste any time on that trip although the fuel stop in Florence was a little bit longer than normal.They could run 30+ passenger cars if needed but it would tie up a third loco just for the HEP. Don't think the FRA would look too kindly upon it providing motive power on the rear although I have ridden on a passenger train with two Amtrak locos on the front and a MRL SD-40 on the rear pushing.
I find it interesting that Amtrack cars are never marked up with graffiti.

Yo Jawtooth, is that crossing you were filming at in Ashland, VA a NO HORN ZONE after a specific time?
I noticed that the CSX mixed freight never blew their horn as they approached or crossed through, but yet the night Amtrak did...?
Now why does the passenger train blow it's horn, but the mixed freight didn't? Or did that particular Amtrak forget that it was a NO HORN ZONE at the time they passed through?
Because the 2nd night Amtrak didn't blow its horn either! But I guess bells don't count, even though they can be just as annoying??? LOL
We have been to Ashland and stayed in a home that was right next to the train tracks. The first night we stayed, a train went by at night, the house shook, we thought the train was coming through the house. Really scary.
