    Glenn have your guitar tech put a shim in the neck pocket to get a little more back angle. That should make the action more adjustable.

    • @serendipityrecordco9380
      @serendipityrecordco9380 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Was just about to comment the same. My preference for bolt on guitars in the entry level quality range is from personal experience with cheaper set neck/thru guitars that were not adjustable to decent spec due to improper neck angle. Relief and neck angle seem like 90% of setting action. Bridge height is the fine tuning.

    • @jeffkellogg76
      @jeffkellogg76 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@serendipityrecordco9380 you definitely start with a straight neck and then give it a little relief. Set the action at the nut and then the bridge. The incorrect back angle on the neck makes low action somewhat impossible. I use masking tape to build a slight wedge in the neck pocket then check the action at the twelfth fret. This usually works well for me and I feel that masking tape, which is made from wood, gives me a wedge that fully supports the neck in the pocket as opposed to the thin shims placed at one end of the pocket. This can result in a hump in the neck over time and the shim is easily lost if you remove the neck.

    • @razztastic

      You shouldn't have to do that to get a quality product from a company with such a near spotless track record like Harley Benton.

    • @jeffkellogg76
      @jeffkellogg76 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@razztastic just about any and every guitar company that has bolt on necks, will occasionally have a neck that needs shimming. It up to quality control to ensure that it gets done right. Some guitars get by QC and need adjustment as do the truss rods . That’s why they make them so they CAN BE ADJUSTED

    We can't expect perfection, I guess, but they should make guitars 'plug and play' for beginners. Mind you, compared to cheap guitars when I started out, this is still miles ahead. You get what you pay for. Which is something everyone should remember.

    • @Broccoli_Highkicks
      @Broccoli_Highkicks ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I largely agree. But the "you get what you pay for" rule doesn't seem to actually apply to guitars. There are plenty of brands who do no better on QC and set-up than HB at 3 to 5 times the price. Some I could mention can't even consistently provide flawless instruments that are playable out of the box at 10 times the price.

    • @teddy3k3
      @teddy3k3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm a firm believer in "you get what you pay for" but like the other commenter said, I also don't think it applies to guitars either. But here's my take.
      A part of learning guitar, at least for me, is learning how to take care of it. The playability of these HB guitars might not be so great as other guitars that are taken care of better, but if you learn to set the action, change strings, clean and oil the fretboard, sand frets, and solder, you can make any guitar play amazing.
      I think that these skills are important to learn if you are a guitarist.

      @@teddy3k3 I’m with you on this one. My playing has become so much better after learning how to setup my guitars to my liking. To the point where a $75 bullet strat is becoming my favourite one I own after changing the pickups, wiring, tuners, and nut.
      It didn’t need any fretwork (my HB tele did though, which is also phenomenal). It’s got great bones and just feels awesome to play. I’ve learned so much building it and I’m less than $250 into it all together

    I’ve noticed a pretty rough streak in Harley Benton’s quality over the past about year or so - I’ve bought a good dozen of their guitars to review and each one seemed to get progressively more disappointing. Their ST-20 I bought a year ago was killer, but since then it’s been issue after issue.
    It’s never big things, either - it’s always small, QC-related issues that just compound over time. First it was a Fusion with fret sprout, then a TE-62 with bum electronics, a CST-24 whose electronics died TEN MINUTES into playing, and most recently the notorious JA-20 and Victory Active. (And don’t get me started on how HIDEOUSLY DRY the fretboards are!)
    I really do love Harley Benton’s - the bang for the buck is pretty insane all things considered. I’m really hoping they’re aware of it and start getting their act together, or at least start doing a better job of QC before shipping. A guitarist can hope, right? 🤷‍♂️

    Hey Glen,
    Been watching your channel for a while now and I love your fearless gear reviews. I was wondering if you could revisit one of those reviews on the Boss Katana Head MKII 100 watt amp head. I'm not sure if you're familiar with Lambchopper678, but he's a big thrash guy who chases tone from megadeth and Metallica and it seems like this boss katana does a great job. Your review is around 5 years old and I’m curious if the software has updated and if it’s for the better and also how does it compare with modern amp sims. Five years is a long time and amp sims have increased immensely since then and I’m curious if it’s more worth it to purchase the Katana over an amp sim. I think it could be a cool video and it would be neat to see if you can get certain tones from various metal albums.
    Looking forward to the next video!

    Just learn how to adjust the action. The newer versions come with the special tool but you can also use pliers. You need to loose only two screws to change a string. It should take about 5 seconds per screw. Buy a set of high quality metric allen keys. There are guitars that don’t need any tools for changing strings but those guitars don’t have the tuning stability of locking nut and bridge. The headless design also has much better portability and tuner accuracy.

    One of the guitarists in my band had one of these, and I bought one too (I'm a bassist who plays a bit of guitar, and I like headless instruments). We both found that a shim sorted out issues with the action - presumably once you've got the action how you like it, you're not going to change it on a regular basis. A further advantage to headless tuners is that you can tune in either direction to a note, rather than having to tune to a note from flat as you do with headed instruments. And a bonus to a headless - you only stick it in the singer's ear if you really mean to.

    Very fair. Although, as far as I can tell this is the first iteration of this model, and based on what you said, the only major thing they need to fix is the bridge, so if they can engineer a better solution for that (instead of using an off-the shelf one, to keep the price low) this does have the potential to become an awesome model in the future.

I’d like to see separate bridge and tuner systems: a roller tune-o-matic bridge for easy height and intonation plus designed-in maintaining of string radius. Tuners can have easier to operate size when separate from the bridge and have design flexibility regarding positioning on the body.

    Bought one, played fine, changed the strings and the bridge fell apart and the locking “head” wouldn’t lock the strings in place. The tool for the action is not included so its a mess.

    Do you actually have an older Model? afaik they made some improvements on the bridge (who am i to say i haven't tried it out) so if the bridge parts are screwed in directly on the body then it is deffo an older model. The newer ones have a piece of metal between the Wood and the bridge. But idk even after that change they didnt have the best action ever. (ie see Hennings video on them)

  • @lfaf9509
    @lfaf9509 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The fret issue is likely going to happen on a lot of HB guitars, as they don't do the best job of drying the wood before they make guitars with it. The bridge issue he had though, seemed to be mostly about issues that almost all headless guitars are going to have, such as the manner in which you adjust the action. Though by the sound of it, this one needs a shim in the neck pocket. The shim will raise the neck, so depending on how thick it is, he may need to actually raise the bridge and pickups lol.

      I own several HB guitars and some are around ten years old. No wood problems whatsoever. Your argument was 50 years maybe valid but not any more.

      @@narvul
      I didn't make a argument, but rather a statement. I said "a lot of HB guitars" not "all HB guitars." but I didn't go into detail as to why that is.
      When you live in a environment that has less moisture in it, the fretboard will loose water and thus it will shrink. When the fretboard shrinks, your frets will get closer and closer to sprouting. If your environment is more dry then the wood was exposed to before it was finished at a factory, then your fretboard will shrink to smaller than it has ever been, and bang you have fretsprout.
      Now that can be a issue with any guitar, no matter the company that makes them. It actually just depends on how dry the wood is in the factory vs how dry it gets in your home. Folks who live in dry areas, deal with fretsprout a lot more than folks who don't. This is why I said, "a lot" and its likely why yours are not having that issue.
      I am not saying HB guitars are not good, but they are made as cheaply as possible and as fast as possible... For obvious reasons :)
      I would even recommend them to people who are new, along with getting a good setup of course. Honestly, once they are dialed in, they work just as good as any other guitar.

    As a person who mainly plays a Legator Ghost 8 string headless id say i perfer changing the strings in a headless than on a guitar with a headstock cuz i hate having to do that counter-intuitive winding for the strings and shit. Its just never made sense to me im not saying i dont know how to but its more effort than its worth to me.
    I will admit though that the learning curve is steep when you get a headless but after it clicks after the first or second string you change you can finish in about 10-15 minutes tops

    I was at a Guitar Center a few weeks ago, and saw they had THREE decapitated Gibsons/Epiphones in for repair! Occurred to me that somebody should develop a luthier’s kit to convert a broken Gibson into an actual headless guitar: New headpiece to secure the strings, roller saddles to replace the Tune-O-Matic, and tuning machinery in place of the stop-tail.

    I shimmed the neck on mine and it made it a little better, but for some reason this guitar is just hard to play...sometimes when I play it I feel like I feel like I suck at guitar...this may be true but it feels more like I forgot how to play when using it. The tuners are better than my Strandberg with the spacing though. Also they do now include the string height tool and also the hardware is properly grounded so that's a plus. Overall this guitar unfortunately lives in its case and does not have a spot on my wall/guitar stand since I wouldn't be able to hang it if I wanted to :)

    Can we have a blind comparison of the harley benton SH you love and the same guitar with the pickups from that headless in it, particulalry in the context of pinch harmonic parts? You highlighted this as a major difference between the guitars. I think this is a difference that pickup sensitivities and cutoff frequencies in the context ogf high gain metal tones actully make.

    Used a Harley Benton Bass at a jam session last week when I heard the price of 130 euro I thought that it was nothing but the thing played really good, low action fast playing, a surprise. Great paint finish aswell. You understand the price by the sometimes cheap feeling neck and frets, and the tuners were razer thin metal and the intonation was a bit off. All in all a great suprise from HB but I stick with mine Yamaha. Not all HB guitars are equal apperently.

    A lot of people do not care for headless guitars. I own one headless guitar and it pretty old an 80s Hondo Sting H-795 still in mint condition. I bought it for the style it's pretty pointy almost a lightning shaped guitar in a red and yellow paint scheme. No where on the guitar does it say Hondo just The Sting on the body. I paid a whole $85.00 brand new at a local shop. Surprisingly it plays great but the pick ups were junk microphonic, tons of feed back etc. They had to be changed. I actually love the guitar it was the only one I kept when I sold off my first collection. Mainly no one wanted it, today it sells for any where from around $400.00 and I saw one on Ebay sell for $800.00! I do not know who made the tail piece or if it's a copy of another brand but it's very easy to set up and restring. I did have a Steinberger full body that was stolen and recovered at the bottom of the Charles River it was pretty much ruined! I am open to buying another headless guitar I won't buy new I'll wait to find a good price on preowned for the right price i would try out an HB headless guitar.

    You should always have a backup guitar on stage anyway, much quicker to switch guitars on a string break than restringing it. Also applies for something else breaking, dead battery, etc., I've needed to switch to my backup a few times in these situations over my playing "career".

    What i personally experienced with HB guitars that ar Bolt on is the following.
    If you can't get the action to you liking, and the trussrod is set up properly the problem might be in the neckpocket. I had a bolt on HB with the issue that i couldn't get the action to my liking, brought it to my luthier and he took the neck of because it sat in the neck pocket at a slight angle and then he put in some special plates, don't what they're called, and then the neck was dead straight in the pocket and everything else was perfect afterwards.
    So maybe that's your problem too with this guitar.

    Aren't you in Canada? It's Winter brother! The humdity variation between where a guitar is assembled and where it ends up living can vary wildly. Not saying it's always the case. But it often IS the case that seasonal "fret end creep" due to a drastic drop in humidity during Winter months. I live in south Alabama. Our average humidity is around 55%. In Summer it's not unusual for it to get up in the 80% range. If l took my guitars to Canada in Winter l can almost guarantee every one of the will have exposed fret ends.
    So I'm not saying it's always the case. But ir frequently is. Especially in Winter months in northern latitudes.
    A case helps. But it's no magic bullet. Best thing you can do is to,in addition to a case, keep your guitars in a humidty controlled environment.
    This is probably stuff you already know. But maybe it'll help some other folks.

    @JoeBaermann ปีที่แล้ว

    Get the neck angle set correct and you should be able to drop the action down.
    Will see if I can find the TH-cam video where method of meassurement and calculations are included, its basically making sure that a completely straight necks last fret meets where the string rest in the saddle with the bridge and saddles all the way down towards the body with the addition of wanted string clearance and angle nedded to have a straight edge to sit straigth on all frets while meeting that point.
    Depending on if the neck sits to high or to low, it can be shimmed (full size shim with angle) or material can be renoved from the pocket or neck.
    Nothing wrong in using small shims either, I just prefer that the fill the entire pocket.
    Your hands are large enough making it possible to have the action so high that you can park trucks under them strings while still bring able to shred, but that requires practice.

    • @JoeBaermann
      @JoeBaermann ปีที่แล้ว

      Don’t be to sure about that Graphtech nut btw.
      The so called Tusqxl that was on my Fusion 2 is not the same material as the real deal, the printing also came off very easy unlike the real one which seems to be embossed.
      Guess it’s some licensed crap.
      Changing strings on headless guitars is a PITA in general, and if not there are other issues, they need to use more time to come up with a good system.

    I gotta agree with Glen. Making stuff a pain in the ass to service gets old fast when you're touring, gigging frequently and/or in the studio. It's a common problem: making it look cool vs making it practical sometimes doesn't work in a mutually agreeable manner. Then again, some designers might hate players?

  • @gumbomudderx7503
    @gumbomudderx7503 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It sounds to me like it’s not the bridge’s problem so much, but the neck needs to be shimmed. That would lower your action and fix the problem with the high E being maxed out for as low as it can go. I still get that the bridge is a pain in the ass though. I have a Hohner headless guitar from the 80’s, and it has a Steinberger tremolo bridge on it. I can’t say enough good things about the Steinberger bridge! They do require an Allen wrench like a strat to adjust the action, but they are an amazing design. Looks like the biggest swing and miss they made with your guitar is they should have made it to accept double ball end strings. With double ball strings, string changes are fast and simple. The only down side is finding them in lots of different gauges or finding them in stock at your local guitar store at all. Most people don’t want to custom order guitar strings. I buy most of my shit on line anyway though, so it’s not that big of a deal to me.

    So what I really want to know is why you have trouble getting pinch harmonics from one guitar but it's easy on another. The headless has 2 more frets, which means the pickups are in a slightly different spot relative to the strings, has 20mm longer scale length (doesn't that affect where the harmonis are???), and finally (and according to your experiment, least relevant), has completely different pickups. I'm thinking it's the scale length, causing you to have to pinch the string in a slightly different spot.
    What say you Glenn?
    And dude....500k SUBS!
    FUCK YEAH!!!

    I don't understand some of the modern headless guitars being hard to string up. I have an 84 or so Steinberger (original owner) and it's a snap to string up, and I use the string clamp accessory so can use regular strings and not double end strings. I've heard other stringing complaints on the HB guitar you have.
