  • VESSELS OF THE UNCONSCIOUS
    Curated by Laurencia Strauss
Moving seamlessly between film and sculpture, Claudio Marcotulli uses light, color, and aerodynamics principles to explore existential questions around cosmology and flight.
Vessels of the Unconscious gathers works produced from 2019 to early 2023, where Marcotulli materializes investigations about physics and metaphysics through the creation of large, vibrantly illuminated gravitational sculptures, resin encapsulated assemblages, and videos of thermal soaring birds and paragliders. Wood, metal, circular saw blades, coins and reflective dark surfaces are recurring elements in his dark matter series.
Models and sketches on a dedicated shelf reveal the playful nature of his thought processes, reminiscent of his youth when he became fascinated with the materiality and immateriality of air through remote control airplanes and paragliders. In his art practice he relates to air as a source of astrophysical connection and creativity.
The title of the exhibition references the idea of navigating the visible and the invisible in the quest of bringing to the fore notions of existence. In this exhibit, take-offs, soarings and landings observed in birds and aerodynamic vessels punctuate Marcotulli’s perception of the universe - some place between reality, utopia and unknown multiverses.
