According to available records, the hottest day in New York City in 1989 was July 22nd, with a temperature of 104°F (40°C) recorded in Central Park at 2:10 pm. This surpassed the previous record of 101°F (38°C) set on July 22, 1957. The heat index, which takes into account humidity, made it feel like an unbearable 112°F (44°C).
This sweltering day was part of a prolonged heat wave that affected the region, with temperatures remaining above average for several days. The extreme heat was accompanied by stagnant air, making it feel like a “steam bath” for many New Yorkers.
