You saved my tracker brother! Really appreciate you man!! Hwy83 for the win! Thanks Tony!!! I bought this thing and belts were screaming, I thought no big deal I've been a mechanic all my life. The belts were cutting into the timing cover and I realized something was very wrong. With this trick I'm Rockin and Rollin again buddy! 👍
Good fix, I have a Volkswagen Beetle alternator that the previous owner buggered up the pulley. The thing is practically brand new otherwise. I may give this a shot. Thanks much!
I used the book. I learned that the keyway tick sounds just like lifters not filling up. When I put the next one back back together, will be cranking it down to 94lb +.
Mine (B18C1 GS-R) doesn’t look that bad but the space looks worn out, edges aren’t crisp. The key itself is pretty chewed up though. My issue is the crankshaft bolt came loose and wallowed out the harmonic balancer key way and the key way on the crankshaft
How do you lock the shaft so you can torque to 94 ft. pounds on an automatic transmission car? Will you be doing an oil seal and oil pump replacement in the future?
Hey 83 beer in hand you rule broke bolt on crank gear drilled out threads may be damaged can it be taped if nessery thanks for reply early still need that gear from you depending on answer
You said to replace the gear if its wollared out. Mine is in not bad but not idea plus i droppednit and crackes the thing tootbed wall. Where can i buy a new one? Do uou have a source?
Can anyone help me with something? My 90 sidekick starts great and idles a little high as it warms up but after a minute or so the isle goes crazy. It gets really high and then cuts out but before it stops turning it kicks in again and starts to rev up again followed by it cutting out again. Looking down the TB I can actually see the injector spraying fuel and it just stops and starts and stops and starts. It has an even rhythm and if I depress the throttle the rpm goes up and the frequency of the cut out cycles faster. I've changed the throttle position sensor and injector, cleaned the Pcv. Any thoughts?
Is there a way to check for the wallowed out key way without taking off the crank gear? I’m trying to time the engine and I can’t get it to time no matter what so I’m wondering if the issue is a wallowed keyway
Sometimes you can physically see the crank pulley is wobbling. Symptoms you may notice from the engine will be a misfire code or extreme loss of power. The vehicle idle well but have no power throughout the RPM range until you reach 5000 RPM then it will pick up slightly
@@Hwy83SUZUKI These were exactly my symptoms! In more detail - it felt like it was slow to shift gears, I just assumed it was because it's an older car and I'm coming from a Civic. But then one day it started downshifting constantly when it used to coast nicely in 2nd or 3rd (I have an automatic). Then all of the sudden it just would not get into first from idle. If I feathered the gas I was able to get it to catch and it would roll a bit. Hoping this solution works for me, thank you for the video!
I did it, very hard never used JB weld, I used a thicker key and made what they call a 2 point key. Bottom part that fill the gap and then the upper portion on the correct time position!
I had a question that I really hope you can answer!🙏🏽 I have a 1996 Geo tracker and it came stock with no a/c, so I found a 1995 with ac and took all the components out to swap into my 96, and I ran into a problem... I was told I was Gona be able to hook all the wires up but there’s no hvac🤦🏼♂️ and now I need to search junk yards or search the inter web for a wiring harness for my ac🥺 and here in Hawaii it’s hot all year long so this would be a nice upgrade
So I’m running into an issue with my tracker 1.6l 16v with getting the crank gear off to replace the seal. I tried reinstalling the old timing belt and putting a screw driver through the timing gear and it just broke the belt. I even went and bought a new impact and hammered on it and I can’t get the thing to come loose. I was about to get a monkey wrench and then I thought “ I wonder what highway 83 would do. Any advice would be appreciated
An impact gun almost always rips the crank bolt off. If not adding heat will do the trick. Last technique would be a long breaker bar and rotate the engine until the bar is resting on the driver frame rail, then bump the key to spin the starter, the engine will turn and break the bolt free
I made a wrench that bolts to an adjacent bolt ( alternator) and hold the other end with the crank pulley, then tighten the bolt ! That wrench safe my engine !
It lets the key be too lose so this ends up a raping/damaging the crankshaft AND the pulley. So the pulley ends up wobbling, which can lead to more parts getting damaged, eg the crankshaft and the engine internals In my case I spotted a wobbly pulley, stripped it down get get a good look, turned out it was just like this guy said, the crankshaft had damage that needed filled, so that the keyway stays still and stops causing havoc.
dude put some oil /cooking spray on the crank pin, this will allow you to pull it out once the epoxy is hardened also the lock tight is enough on the bolt 🔩
This guy is what happens when John Rambo isn't run out of town by a power-tripping sheriff but instead stays and builds his own successful mechanics business.
Yes absolutely, during the video I mention some guys do fill in the void with an actual Weld and grind it smooth. Although the majority of Geo Tracker owners are either new to working on vehicles and or not experienced enough to tackle a proper weld in this circumstance. So this is a simple tried-and-true method that has worked over the years.
@@Hwy83SUZUKI ah, I must have missed that - I like JBWeld, but if I'm gonna make that crank work for the last time it'll work, I wanna feel like I'm making it last a bit longer :) though I have no idea how JBWeld will handle a rotating assembly and the heat, it could be better than a weld for all I know.
The funniest thing about this too me is that the bolt needs to be torqued to 94fpt. The engine doesn't even make enough torque to tighten its own crank bolt.
This process works 100% and has saved countless engines. The epoxy is just filling the void. The loctite sleeve retainer is the key & does an amazing job on areas of lost tolerances. With the final torque to 94 pounds we've never had a failure with this procedure 😀👍

So glad I found this. Just had this happen on 1999 Metro. It was my mom's car. Gonna give it a try. Thanks
I had done this same repair on my old Chevy 235 years ago, and I’m about to do it on a Chevy small block. Yes, it does work.
Keep it up brother. You are becoming the Guru of the Geo world.
This guy is amazing ! Hilarious and informational
Glad you are enjoying the videos 😁

Dude that was sweeeeeet! my daily Sidekick just showed me it's problem, this is the problem, Damn, I need another beer.
I'll drink to that 🍻 good luck on the repair!
How do you lock the crankshaft (engine in car) on cars with automatic transmissions when torquing the bolt to 94 ft. lbs.?
Hey man came here looking to learn about fixing keyways and you have great positive outlook on things and i just enjoyed your content man… great stuff

Would the key rattling cause cylinder 3 and 4 to misfire? I have that problem and I’m about to fix the key and I’m worried if it’s more than just this
Yes. Usually a code for random misfire

Do you sell the crankcase for 1990 Suzuki sidekick
I'm gonna try this on my 2004 flywing mx 150 stator and crankshaft keyway
Thanks allot brother. Enjoy your Miller

How would you go about getting the pulley off after doing this procedure? They did not do the oil seal when they fixed mine, now it needs it.
Buy a pulley puller
Bro what engine can I put in a 1990 sidekick keeping the original transmission (I want a toyota engine).
what size (make or No#) camshaft seal do you use , I removed both timing & cam ( front) seals & the ones removed both are the same NOK 32038

Bro. The shop the Suzukis. The brewski. I don't usually say this. But let's party!
do i need to take out the entire engine to do this?

The key is not being JB welded in. The JB weld is used to fill the void.
hah! i believe i`ve found what im looking for... ill be watching this now... thanks!
Where can I find crank gear with teeth on back every one I find base no teeth on back to read possible crank sender 98 Trac
I took mine apart and key looks fine. Why the wobble?
Harmonic balancer pulley damage is possible

Someone tried fixing mine with loctite when I rebuilt mine I ended up welding a new key on the crank haven't had a issue since
It is very common ! Needs to be tight to specs !
How do you keep the motor from turning when torqueing it down?
If it's a 5 speed you can leave the transmission in gear and put chock on wheel.
I made a wrench that bolts to an adjacent bolt ( alternator) and hold the other end with the crank pulley, then tighten the bolt ! That wrench safe my engine !
My sandpaper makes that sound every time. 😂😂😂
Pretty sure I can see the "Pliny the Elder" bottle on the shelf!
Damn straight!! nice EYE my GUY 👀👌
Finally someone with just as bad keyway as me. Rip my miata
I’m having the same prob with my Miata 😢
They have a Miata save kit. Google it up
@1supernumero those only fit the long nose 1.6s not the short nose (the one that usually shears the keyway)
I have a deformed key, sprocket very hard to remove. Some idiot did timing job and , just f’d it All the way up

What are the problems that you can expect with a bad keyway?
It lets the key be too lose so this ends up a raping/damaging the crankshaft AND the pulley.

In the video we use both

put some oil /cooking spray on the crank pin, this will allow you to pull it out once the epoxy is hardened
also the lock tight is enough on the bolt 🔩

Why not just use some tig weld in there, just make sure it cools between layers.?

Although the majority of Geo Tracker owners are either new to working on vehicles and or not experienced enough to tackle a proper weld in this circumstance. If anyone tries this you might want to use a dissimilar metal key like aluminum so the weld doesn't stick to it.
