Thokoza khehla... My parents were married properly, but my father's family homestead is in FS, he left home in the FS and started a life in GP. Now when he married mom, aba khongi were his the family that he stayed with when he got to GP and they are of the same surname not related by clan. My father's family was present though (apparently). He hasn't set foot at his homestead for years now, so how do you perform important rituals on his side(umshado)? and he was absent after they got divorced... But my mother hasn't set foot at FS, she was welcomed as a bride at the GP family where my father stayed as a tenant.
Very informative Siya. But for us amaXhosa we have a surname and a clan name. Clan name being the import one. I assume then, when u talk about changing of surname in your examples, for us would be the clan names? Do you have any view on this?
Thokoza baba. What we are referring to is a surname. Not clan name. This is the one which you and ithongo identity with and is inherited depending on the nature of conception and rituals performed. Please let us know if you need further elaboration.

Im a Swati lady. from Swaziland. we seem to take our fathers surnames no matter if our parents married or not. is this correct? how do I find out the truth of a culture? is it culture perversion or something that is true how we seem to be doing things in our little land. then when i want to get married where am i taken out? my fathers home who never raised me but i have his surname? or my mothers personal home ( hhayi ekhaya) but a property she bought n is her house and now her home, or at her official home? what do we do as Amaswati coz we all are taking fathers surnames who rejected us and have zero to do with our lives?
Nge SiSwati what I know is if there was no marriage, for the child to use the father's surname there must be six cattle latikhiphako; 2 inhlawulo/ umdzalaso (these are both killed), 2 tinkhomo temvimba ( these are never killed but remain ekhaya kini, they will be used in the event that babe wemntfwana akakuloboli and you end up ulobolwa ngulenye indvodza), and the last 2 tinkhomo tekutsenga sibongo ( these are also killed, in the ritual to have you use sibongo sababe wakho). If all this hasn't happened, or has partially happened, sibongo sakho samake wakho. Hope this helps.
