    They didn't tell Hogweed flowers just in the second year of growing.

    And it generates thousands of seeds!

      Some bored soul counted the seeds and it averages out at 50,000 per plant
      As you hint, the easiest way is to cut and remove the roots. I find that if you cut roots at 6" below soil level and remove the plant then repeat if it re-grows, it will kill it. If you cut it when it is flowering or near to flowering, there is enough sap remaining in the stem to allow it to set and mature seeds. Burn material immediately and keep out of the smoke. If you are working with hogweed, suit up and wear a full face mask. Work on a cloudy day, and be sure to hose down the suit before removing it and then take a shower yourself. I learnt the hard way so, hopefully, you don't have to.
      [total root removal is impossible - I have tracked them down over 3 feet and given up]

      When I cut down many trees, especially things that live in America's Temperate Rain Forest, such as the Western Red Maple, AKA Acer Macrophyllum/Acer Rubus (Take your pick), I need to spray the Cambium Layer with Garlon, or some other Herbicide, or all I did was just shorten the tree, and to the ground, at that. Sometimes I let that happen on Dolphin, though, but, when the tree is in "The wrong place..."
      Some form of Herbicide sounds called for in this case.

    • @Tuberuser187
      @Tuberuser187 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really, Knotweed is a problem but its not phototoxic and it doesn't make the ground around it toxic like Giant Hogweed does in critical mass. In the USSR they had the idea of using this as silage for cattle feed and planted it as a crop, now decades on its destroyed almost 40% of the arable land because it went uncontrolled after the collapse of the USSR. It shares all the traits Knotweed has, deep roots, growing fast and ability to get a foothold in almost any condition and is resistant to drought and frost too.

    They have left out so much information. If you are getting rid of it while it is young, you must remove it with the root. If you are lazy like me and don't want to dig, then let it flower and hack it down before it goes to seed. The rest of it will just die on its own as it has spent all of its energy in the flower. But it is important you do it before it goes into seed. The seeds can lay dormant in the ground several years, so you have to revisit that area regularly and repeat the process if necessary till all the seeds have grown and all the plants hacked.

      That wasn't giant hogweed. If it was, the moment you touched it, your immunity to the UV rays from the sun is removed. So, yeah that wasn't GIANT hogweed. There are other species which are usually smaller and cant harm you if you touch them

      Standard hogweed / cow parsley grows tall (about 3 feet high) but is not dangerous even though it looks similar. GHW is pretty obvious as it will literally tower over you when fully grown.
