It was fun to watch you guys. You both were so excited about the possibilities of this bot you were hardly able to get the words out fast enough. Ha Ha Ha Boy! these are amazing times. At the age of 78 I am glad I was able the live long enough to see these advancements actually happen. I am super glad that Elon is on our side and that his mind is concentrating on "peaceful improvements that will benefit all of mankind".
God Bless Elon Musk. I tell people all the time that he is the smartest guy on the planet. Then they give me that "i don't know about that look". Then I ask them who they think the smartest guy on the planet is and they stutter with no answer. His ability to create a vision and actually actually turn that vision into reality is truly amazing. The other amazing thing is his ability to attract SMART people to come and WORK WITH HIM.😊

A lot of inspiration comes from SciFi of decades ago, of space.
It’s cultural, so likely Western ideals, not oriental.
Not much at all rooted in natural environment. (eg play piano)
Also mostly male. (trying to not mimic woke talking points)

I agree as well! And, yes, certainly sci-fi drives the imagination. There have been others in history (many, but not enough - more, recently, since the world population is larger) who have been similarly innovative and paradigm-shifting. Walter Isaacson has chronicled a few. Stephen Wolfram writes about others. In philosophy, all disciplines of science and technology, jurisprudence, etc., we stand on their shoulders. Indeed, amazing times.

If optimus doesn't change it will leave lots of room for nitch manufacturing by others, either as a competitor bot, or as a aftermarket parts, assembly, accessory maker for optimus.
The secret will be to make sure your nitch isn't too small. I was thinking of the standing two wheeled Boston dynamics bot. Something where smooth high-speed transport is highly prized. There could be enough demand for a trait like that to be viable.

19:12 Interesting comparing LLMs that predict the next word from text training on Internet prose to the amount of visual information (and tactical and audible, etc) that a child of 4 years old has experienced. The latter is vast compared to the former. But that reminds me of the work Tesla and others are doing to train networks to predict the content of future visual frames, based on recently experienced past sequences of visual frames. They certainly have the data for that for cars and huge amounts of real-world human purposeful video action on the Internet. This, of course, is what humans do; imagine what is likely or should happen next and select a plan (or plans) to deal with that accordingly.

26:10 - I did NOT know that Leonard Nimoy could not do that. I do know that his mother - on the show - could not do it; she had to put both hands behind her back with camera on close up of her face, and used one hand to separate the fingers on the other, before presenting the Vulcan greeting.

Tesla does not have the advantage in Optimus that they have in FSD. There is nothing corresponding to the enormous video data available to train FSD. That is why they decline to count their Optimus chickens before they are hatched. Elon quotes other peoples' projections rather than offer his own. Most discussion of Optimus is arround hardware not software. Am I missing something?

    • @justohird5685

Their advantage will be in manufacturing, and their ability to train very quickly for factory work. They will also be their first customer, which is much better than working with a third party for training and development.

@@justohird5685 What you say is true, but it presupposes that they have something worth manufacturing at scale. Am I the only Tesla fan slightly embarrassed by the bumbling performance of their current prototypes?

So glad you brought up the idea of Optimus possibly walking upright without the bent knees. You're absolutely right that it may not serve a useful enough purpose. But I guarantee that for the average person who doesn't follow this everyday, seeing a robot do that will be a profound moment.
Optimus 2 is an elegant robot and everyone I know who's seen it said it left a lasting impression.
Having one fully move as we do will elicit a visceral and emotional reaction that no amount of marketing can come close to.
If that's the only thing such an ability accomplishes, it will be worth it.

Face to face discussion works far better than separate remote studios.
Maybe Musk has a point about work from home?
Might be why he needed to sleep on factory floor, not just phone in …

One of the most fascinating things about the Giga-Factory (and some other factories too) is the degree of computer control and synchronization. All those displays everywhere are just human interfaces. The real I/O must be the whole factory network, including Tesla One (isn't that the name of the factory controller?). That alone is a tremendous asset for Tesla and a home-grown differentiator very hard for most other companies to match. I would very much appreciate an entire video on this alone (from John and Scott or Connecting the Dots or The Limiting Factor, etc. - maybe sort of like a CSI Starbase deep dive).

Elon should put 1,000 bots together find a open field and line up all the Bots and perform some Martial Arts in Sync. Like the Martial Artist that you see in China when everyone do their morning exercise in sync. That would show respect to the Chinese people who's culture is to perform Marital Arts in Sync with many Martial Artist.
