I once found a carrier task force, got so excited, it was a perfect set up. Large convoy but for some reason the HMS Illustrious was positioned as the furthest ship to the right of the convoy (for some odd reason but I wasn't complaining) and I happen to be off the right side of said convoy. Lined up my shots three of the four hit her, the last went long. She began listing heavy and the destroyers started searching. Dove and went silent, depth charged at 150 meters during the night is quite scary when you're in external view. I somehow snaked past them and left. Came back the next night to try again as she was still floating. Started lining up my shot when tracers started past my periscope. I panicked and fired with what I had, one of my torpedoes struck her right on the tip of her nose. She didn't sink. I went to 160 meters this time, at least an hour of depth charges while I was at a snails pace. I got away and headed off with my final 5 torpedoes. Came back the next night, she was in the same position, I got my sights on her, Captain, hydrophone, and officer on observation scope all got a 100% fix on her (I know, easy mode noob) and I fired with all five torpedoes this time from what I thought was a safer distance. It wasn't. More tracers came past and the destroyers started coming in but I wanted to SEE it, I wanted to stay at periscope depth and watch her take all five. So stay at periscope depth I did and watcher her take all five I did not. A destroyer clipped her bow and slowed her to an absolute crawl. All missed.

Two quick tips. If the ships name starts with "Empire" it is definitely a cargo ship. Also if you want to check the depth you can open up the map and wherever your cursor is it'll show you the depth of that exact location.
I love how the AI just immediately lawn darted itself into the ocean floor when Woflpack gave the Escape command and he didn't notice until they surfaced again

I was interested in this game but wow!! Wayyy more complex than I ever thought. You are fantastic at this though I must say! Well done indeed! Love watching you run these missions.
Good stuff Wolfpack, I have a few tips for you 1.Torpedoes will detonate at any angle, and duds are impossible as long as torps are pre-heated(Though they do need like 300Metres to arm) 2. I believe the HMS Nelson is a super rare spawn, I've only ran into her once in about 100 hours of gameplay while raiding Scapa Flow 3. The large amount of U-boats you ran into is likely because you have the 'Uboat Expanded' mod enabled. 4. Manual hydrophone operation doesn't really work yet 5. If you're closing in on a contact and your watch crew can't quite see it yet, you should take a look yourself especially during good conditions. 6. For some reason the vast majority of freighters you'll run into will be the Empire Bell/Tower/Explorer or NA-1 7. All merchants apart from the Liberty Cargo and C3 Freighter are unarmed
I saw in another vid of this game that ships that get sunk sometimes leave boxes floating on the sea that you can recover with stuff in them. This could allow you to replenish your food at sea

It's quite different from Silent hunter. There is far more micro management than Silent hunter which can take a while to get efficient at, but on the other hand actually finding and engaging ships is far easier since torpedoes very very rarely malfunction and the AI is fairly stupid for the most part, also planes aren't nearly as dangerous and it's entirely possible to outfit your U-boat with late war equipment like snorkels , advanced radar detectors, better conning towers, hyrdophones etc before the start of 1942. However in its current state the game seems to become far more unstable the longer the war goes on and game breaking bugs become common.

you can do better on crew management.. if you send an officer to bed, also 'release' the persons on him to let them go to rest as well. also you can overassign crew to a certain task, all the green bars represent the help needed at that station.. so 1 green 1 yellow, means you can assign a crew member to someone else.
