I once had this nightmare where I was swimming, when suddenly I was in the middle of the ocean. I looked down and I saw this ginormous, snake-like shadow under me. The creature swam all the way down then turned around and opened it’s mouth, but the mouth was so massive that it caused a whirlpool, and as I sunk into the whirlpool, the creature was ascending towards me, and it’s forked tongue wrapped around me as it’s jaws closed around me.

I truly love this one. My admiration for the sea holds no bounds. Regardless of our advances, the sea holds and always will - an unparalleled mysticism. Given their context of the Leviathan, my favorite interpretation lies beyond it's representation of the sea. It is a representation of how the Universe was constructed from subjugating the Leviathan; the essence of chaos. Chaos itself being stateless, formless, and timeless is restrained to create our reality and it is because it was made from such a beast that we could have free will. Those who exercise their power being made in the image of God can eat from the Leviathan by exercising free will instead of being deterministic. This also gives context, in my view, to why this is God's response to Job. God didn't need to give us free will and if we seek it we shall find and eat from it as his children. Anyway, this also integrates quantum behaviour in my mind as it is the nature of the Leviathan/Chaos displaying formlessness, timelessness, and statelessness until forced to collapse. You can use mythologies to better understand how different ideas have been perceived historically by the human experience. I don't need to believe in them literally for them to have meaningful interpretations. This was a really good video. I remember reading about the Leviathan in my Bible when I was just 7 years old, and it awakened in me a deep admiration for the ocean depths, all creatures within it, and the God I believe placed them there to thrive. That fascination with the abyss has stayed with me even into adulthood, and I thank the Lord for it. In regards to what I believe the Leviathan is actually supposed to be... I don't know. I wasn't sure back then, and I'm still not sure now. I'm absolutely certain that it's use in Isaiah was to be taken as a metaphor, with some scholars I've read understanding it as representing Babylon or other enemies/threats to Israel, but in regards to Job and the Psalms, I'm torn between thinking it a myth or symbol, a misrepresentation of a less extravagant beast, or a true colossus of the deep. With how little we really know about our oceans, and evidence of abyssal gigantism in the marine sciences, I find it to treat the notion of such a creature as nothing more than legend.

John Minton I don’t think job was sinning tho. The whole point was to find a person who loved god and didn’t sin and make his life into shit to test his faith. Regardless of who took away what. God orchestrated the whole event and caused undue suffering for no reason. There’s certain versions where god gives job almost everything back and then some. The Bible is a book of wisdom. Wisdom is knowledge gained through life experience. We can learn from the bible, or we can learn from the 'school of hard knocks' - better to learn from other's mistakes. Great Job looking at so many different theories of one of the Bibles most mysterious and fascinating creatures. As this vid is a year old someone may have already brought this up; in my research I learned that Leviathan is a left over reference to an older version of the creation myth. Leviathan refers to the primordial entity of chaos that existed before the world, or even time. In this story God, battles, subdues and binds the beast to end Chaos and establish the order needed to create the heavens and the Earth. Here Leviathan can be compared with Canaanite and Babylonian myths of Baal defeating Lotan, and Marduk defeating Tiamat... both of whom take the form of giant serpents. Ironically it also has a parallel in Norse Mythology in the character of the world serpent, Jormungandr, who battles the sky god Thor.
I remember seeing another comment in a pirates of the Caribbean video that stated that the speech that Davy Jones gives when summoning the kraken parallels what Job in the Bible says when he first mentions it. I think Leviathan is a hold over from a common myth in the area in which a ruler god had to overcome a primordial sea monster, such as Marduk vs. Tiamat, or Zeus vs. Typhon. However, when they bring that myth to the Hebrew God who is already the primordial being, the story looses it's meaning, so your just left with the monster as a reference.

Leviathan is symbolic for the constellation of the sea monster Cetus in the sky. Cetus lies in the region of the sky called the water. It's also referred to as the whale, I think the same one that swallowed Jonah, but in mythology is a giant sea serpent.
Remember the sea and the deep or great deep all refer to hell and are symbolic of he'll because no one can see and plunge its depths. But leviathan is also knows what this beast is . It is a type of sea dragon and is first among the sea creatures he ( God) created and is completely wild.
My interpretation comes from the literal point of view (I take the Bible literally where possible. Obviously some of the stories of leviathan are metaphorical here, though Job appears to be a literal story). The reason why many animals are believed to be fantasy is because we don’t have any similar creatures existing currently. So for example, snakes that can eject and spit venom over a small distance. If none of these creatures existed currently, we’d assume that they didn’t exist at all and would categorize them as “mythological.” The way that leviathan is described in Job, it’s obviously an animal that lives in the sea, but has a scaly and hardened Hide. Obviously a reptile. For me, I have decided to pick the Sarcosuchus as the likely candidate for this creature and I’ll explain why. It’s a Giant reptilian crocodile type creature. It fits all of the descriptions quite well, except the fact that this creature can shoot fire from its mouth, obviously bringing thoughts of dragons to most minds. In Florida, there is a race of beetle called the bombardier beetle. This creature has a sac on its back that has a small membrane that divides the sac into two halves. Each half contains a liquid that when shot out of the back of the beetle and mixed, produces a flame that burn over 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. So if an insect can produce a flame, there’s no reason to assume that this is a mythological Power. The Sarcosuschus is anatomically similar to all other crocodile-esque creatures in every regard except one. In the very back of the throat, high up behind the brain is an additional cavity that no one can account for or figure out why it’s there. My assumption is that this creature had a membrane sac very similar to the ones that bombardier beetles have in this cavity and with it could produce flames from its mouth and smoke from its nostrils as it floated on the top of the water as crocs do. There’s a few other reasons I’d give but this post is already getting long. I might write an addendum later. I’ll just finish by saying this: the locals within the Congo told the westerners that the creature known now as the gorilla existed for over 100 years before they were discovered, all the while denying the locals’ stories and believing the creatures to be myths. The Portuguese did the same for several centuries with the Orangutan as well until it was discovered also calling it a fabrication of children. Theres also many creatures that exist today (I have a list of nearly 70 myself) of so called living fossils with Megaladons being one of the more recent that is coming under scrutiny as many scientists now believe that the creature might still be alive today, with recent discoveries of teeth and whatnot; this of course spawned the recent Meg movie as the discovery of gorillas spawned in turn King Kong. - This to say that even though the Sarcosuchus supposedly died out millions of years ago does not make it so as there’s only conjecture to say it is so.

I once had this nightmare where I was swimming, when suddenly I was in the middle of the ocean. I looked down and I saw this ginormous, snake-like shadow under me. The creature swam all the way down then turned around and opened it’s mouth, but the mouth was so massive that it caused a whirlpool, and as I sunk into the whirlpool, the creature was ascending towards me, and it’s forked tongue wrapped around me as it’s jaws closed around me.
I love swimming and snorkeling in the ocean so much. But I hate scuba diving. Also the first time I saw a big bull shark I stopped snorkeling for a week then I got the guts to face them and now I don't even really get scared even when sharks are around

Given their context of the Leviathan, my favorite interpretation lies beyond it's representation of the sea. It is a representation of how the Universe was constructed from subjugating the Leviathan; the essence of chaos. Chaos itself being stateless, formless, and timeless is restrained to create our reality and it is because it was made from such a beast that we could have free will. Those who exercise their power being made in the image of God can eat from the Leviathan by exercising free will instead of being deterministic. This also gives context, in my view, to why this is God's response to Job. God didn't need to give us free will and if we seek it we shall find and eat from it as his children. Anyway, this also integrates quantum behaviour in my mind as it is the nature of the Leviathan/Chaos displaying formlessness, timelessness, and statelessness until forced to collapse. This was a really good video. I remember reading about the Leviathan in my Bible when I was just 7 years old, and it awakened in me a deep admiration for the ocean depths, all creatures within it, and the God I believe placed them there to thrive. That fascination with the abyss has stayed with me even into adulthood, and I thank the Lord for it.
In regards to what I believe the Leviathan is actually supposed to be... I don't know. I wasn't sure back then, and I'm still not sure now. I'm absolutely certain that it's use in Isaiah was to be taken as a metaphor, with some scholars I've read understanding it as representing Babylon or other enemies/threats to Israel, but in regards to Job and the Psalms, I'm torn between thinking it a myth or symbol, a misrepresentation of a less extravagant beast, or a true colossus of the deep. With how little we really know about our oceans, and evidence of abyssal gigantism in the marine sciences, I find it to treat the notion of such a creature as nothing more than legend.
I've oftentime wondered if there's another reason besides the scientific ones why no submarines etc cannot go beyond a certain Dept in the sea maybe there is something down there that humans are not meant to see as yet?

First whenever we hear the term "beast" it is referring to "fleshly matters", or desires of the fleshly realm. Money, property, power, prestige, fame ect.

Fun fact: In the movie Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Leviathan and the Loch Ness Monster are one and the same creature. It was one of the Titans awakened by King Ghidorah (along with its rival, Behemoth, which resembles a mammoth/gorilla/sloth hybrid).

Great Job looking at so many different theories of one of the Bibles most mysterious and fascinating creatures. As this vid is a year old someone may have already brought this up; in my research I learned that Leviathan is a left over reference to an older version of the creation myth. Leviathan refers to the primordial entity of chaos that existed before the world, or even time. In this story God, battles, subdues and binds the beast to end Chaos and establish the order needed to create the heavens and the Earth. Here Leviathan can be compared with Canaanite and Babylonian myths of Baal defeating Lotan, and Marduk defeating Tiamat... both of whom take the form of giant serpents. Ironically it also has a parallel in Norse Mythology in the character of the world serpent, Jormungandr, who battles the sky god Thor.
It's real, and it's still very much so with us.

I think Leviathan is a hold over from a common myth in the area in which a ruler god had to overcome a primordial sea monster, such as Marduk vs. Tiamat, or Zeus vs. Typhon. However, when they bring that myth to the Hebrew God who is already the primordial being, the story looses it's meaning, so your just left with the monster as a reference.

Leviathan is symbolic for the constellation of the sea monster Cetus in the sky. Cetus lies in the region of the sky called the water. It's also referred to as the whale, I think the same one that swallowed Jonah, but in mythology is a giant sea serpent.

My interpretation comes from the literal point of view (I take the Bible literally where possible. Obviously some of the stories of leviathan are metaphorical here, though Job appears to be a literal story).
The reason why many animals are believed to be fantasy is because we don’t have any similar creatures existing currently. So for example, snakes that can eject and spit venom over a small distance. If none of these creatures existed currently, we’d assume that they didn’t exist at all and would categorize them as “mythological.”
The way that leviathan is described in Job, it’s obviously an animal that lives in the sea, but has a scaly and hardened Hide. Obviously a reptile. For me, I have decided to pick the Sarcosuchus as the likely candidate for this creature and I’ll explain why.
It’s a Giant reptilian crocodile type creature. It fits all of the descriptions quite well, except the fact that this creature can shoot fire from its mouth, obviously bringing thoughts of dragons to most minds.
In Florida, there is a race of beetle called the bombardier beetle. This creature has a sac on its back that has a small membrane that divides the sac into two halves. Each half contains a liquid that when shot out of the back of the beetle and mixed, produces a flame that burn over 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. So if an insect can produce a flame, there’s no reason to assume that this is a mythological Power.
The Sarcosuschus is anatomically similar to all other crocodile-esque creatures in every regard except one. In the very back of the throat, high up behind the brain is an additional cavity that no one can account for or figure out why it’s there. My assumption is that this creature had a membrane sac very similar to the ones that bombardier beetles have in this cavity and with it could produce flames from its mouth and smoke from its nostrils as it floated on the top of the water as crocs do.
There’s a few other reasons I’d give but this post is already getting long. I might write an addendum later. I’ll just finish by saying this: the locals within the Congo told the westerners that the creature known now as the gorilla existed for over 100 years before they were discovered, all the while denying the locals’ stories and believing the creatures to be myths. The Portuguese did the same for several centuries with the Orangutan as well until it was discovered also calling it a fabrication of children.
Theres also many creatures that exist today (I have a list of nearly 70 myself) of so called living fossils with Megaladons being one of the more recent that is coming under scrutiny as many scientists now believe that the creature might still be alive today, with recent discoveries of teeth and whatnot; this of course spawned the recent Meg movie as the discovery of gorillas spawned in turn King Kong.
- This to say that even though the Sarcosuchus supposedly died out millions of years ago does not make it so as there’s only conjecture to say it is so.
