  • The White House hosts a unique and historic collection of artwork: Portraits of the men who have held the highest office in the land. Portraitist John Howard Sanden talks with correspondent Mo Rocca about the pressures and pleasures of committing the likeness of a U.S. president or first lady to canvas. Rocca also explores the long-held and bipartisan tradition of artfully preserving the occupants of the White House.

@@poi2587 not even close. Obama has not been respectful to his successor really at all except on two occasions: when Trump was invited to the White House and Inauguration Day. Barack Obama tried to sabotage trumps campaign twice, he wire tapped the campaign and illegally obtained a FISA warrant to spy on atleast six Trump campaign officials. He did this on order to rig the 2016 election in favor of Hillary Clinton, something called Spygate. Obama then used the FBI to sabotage the incoming Trump administration by going after the incoming national security advisor for something even the FBI didn’t think was a crime. Obama has also taken credit for most of the work Trump is actually done. For instance Barack Obama claimed that all the “economic miracles“ trump was promising promising were impossible and then tried to take credit for himself when they actually happen. Trump also got four historic peace deals in the Middle East in less than a month, Obama tried to take credit for that to. So far the only major accomplishment of the Trump administration Obama has not try to take credit for is renegotiating NAFTA. Go to be fair this is not exactly new behavior for Barack Obama, he injected himself and his accomplishments into the biographies of every American president since Calvin Coolidge with the exceptions of Eisenhower and Ford and tried to take credit for their achievements Tomas well. If I were in a similar situation to Trump and there was a president who treated me that badly and try to take credit for all of my achievements I wouldn’t let that portrait in the White House either while I’m there.

I have to question Mo’s interpretation of TR’s portrait. Roosevelt biographer, David McCullough, described the Sargent portrait as capturing the melancholy that plagued TR following the loss of so many loved ones so early in his life - his father while he was at Harvard, both his first wife, Alice, and his mother on the same night while he was a NY state assemblyman. Alice’s death, following the birth of their daughter - also named Alice - poisoned TR’s relationship with her, one of the principal reasons for her outrageous behaviours and her disastrous marriage to Speaker of the House, Nicholas Longworth. The American Experience documentary on TR goes into his persistent depression, what he referred to in his journals as “black care.” Roosevelt’s posture in the portrait may be commanding, but his eyes are filled with pain.

A couple of points: 1st, I’m a descendant of Gilbert Stuart and one of the several original versions of the Washington portrait is on display in the Senate chamber of the Old Colony House in Newport, RI. What makes the portrait truly special is that, in addition to Washington’s eyes following you around the room, his foot also follows you as well. 2nd, Mo’s comment about the confidence seen in the Teddy Roosevelt portrait is a bit off. If you listen to David McCullough’s narration of the PBS American Experience four part episode on TR, he focused attention on the Singer portrait and, specifically, Roosevelt’s eyes. His explanation that you can see the pain and sadness in TR’s eyes from the tragedies he experienced in his life (early loss of his father, the loss of his mother and first wife on the same night as his first child, Alice, was born, and the depression or “black care” that plagued him most of his adult life). Singer captured his almost wistful pain intuitively and insightfully. Physically, TR appears masterful, but as soon as you focus on the eyes, his confidence his lacking.

one gave you, Optimism, courage and hope. The current one is manipulating your fear against you, so he can benefit by lying and deceiving, in which put us back in the 1930s. where this same rhetoric was once tolerated and costed many innocent human lives. We shall continue to keep achieving for more, give those the same opportunity to have a happy life, where food and water are no longer an issue. earth has so much to offer if cultivation was a priority, but greed has poisoned our minds and neglect the same grounds that gives us life.

I think Kennedy's is the most reverent and interesting of all of them. To me, there's no doubt it was painted during the Bay of Pigs and the weight of that decision and the fallout was heavy on his mind. He famously said "It was my decision, the buck stops here with me"..... JFK was the last great democrat. He'd be a republican today.

Neighbors and friends, Robert Doel helped shape my life as an artist and visionary.
I have so many beautiful memories of Robert Doel who lived across the street from me in Russell, Kansas.
He lived in a white 2 story home and green shutters if my memory serves me. I loved his house, sometimes
visiting the interior out of curiosity, and night and day became one, with snowstorms that seemed unnatural.
I was impressed with Roberts's accomplishments throughout life.
So loved Dawsons Drug Store and the visual experience of the luxury of items available to a child.
Then imagine a dream coming true with the Dream Theater on Main street when I was 13.
Our technology age was transforming as our dreams began to manifest.
our awareness to the point that we realized it could talk to you.
You were part of my past and now you
are present, due to the shift in technology and appearing on TV ~ in my home in Hawaii 60 years later.
Growing up, I couldn't imagine TV would eventually talk to you. Did you?
Then the phone was a message that in time God would speak to me audibly, and I transformed
and created Art that the world has never experienced before, visually communicating with the soul of
Jesus and Marian of the ancient time, I shared with Jesus in a cave.
In my later years, my third eye opened and I
was taken back to the cave a year after my art creation yet still remains my awareness of my past life.
Growing up with country folks is something to be proud of and you learn
to appreciate those values of friendship, health, family, and sharing our life together.
What a joy I felt in your TV appearance, knowing the pain of getting old, as I too feel it at 80. Our consciousness
shifts and it becomes one of the beautiful memories of how our true self shaped our lives in remembrance
of our values that shaped our future. God has blessed us dear Neighbor and Friend for your awareness
of your appearance. Was it all the visits into the courthouse and the Russell State Bank?
And now another miracle in connecting with you through video and we again are part of the dream we
created, sharing God's love with you as our journey now is to return home.
Now fast forward in, remembering how Russell, Kansas shaped our lives to create miracles
As an artist, my last vision was to enter into the cave with Jesus, 2,000 years ago when I
walked with him and is now visible as our Christianity and that Jesus is Alive through my soul memories. It is a language of love.
    Happy trails Robert and Elizabeth.
