Can you imagine Trump graciously unveiling the portrait of a predecessor? He wants to unveil his own portrait, sometime during his third term - with his face on Mt. Rushmore in the background.
A couple of points: 1st, I’m a descendant of Gilbert Stuart and one of the several original versions of the Washington portrait is on display in the Senate chamber of the Old Colony House in Newport, RI. What makes the portrait truly special is that, in addition to Washington’s eyes following you around the room, his foot also follows you as well. 2nd, Mo’s comment about the confidence seen in the Teddy Roosevelt portrait is a bit off. If you listen to David McCullough’s narration of the PBS American Experience four part episode on TR, he focused attention on the Singer portrait and, specifically, Roosevelt’s eyes. His explanation that you can see the pain and sadness in TR’s eyes from the tragedies he experienced in his life (early loss of his father, the loss of his mother and first wife on the same night as his first child, Alice, was born, and the depression or “black care” that plagued him most of his adult life). Singer captured his almost wistful pain intuitively and insightfully. Physically, TR appears masterful, but as soon as you focus on the eyes, his confidence his lacking.
I have to question Mo’s interpretation of TR’s portrait. Roosevelt biographer, David McCullough, described the Sargent portrait as capturing the melancholy that plagued TR following the loss of so many loved ones so early in his life - his father while he was at Harvard, both his first wife, Alice, and his mother on the same night while he was a NY state assemblyman. Alice’s death, following the birth of their daughter - also named Alice - poisoned TR’s relationship with her, one of the principal reasons for her outrageous behaviours and her disastrous marriage to Speaker of the House, Nicholas Longworth. The American Experience documentary on TR goes into his persistent depression, what he referred to in his journals as “black care.” Roosevelt’s posture in the portrait may be commanding, but his eyes are filled with pain. th-cam.com/video/SfhRWEXa9bc/w-d-xo.html The description of the darker Roosevelt starts around 21:30.
