Absolutely beautiful ladies. Those harmonies literally made my eyes all teary in the very best of ways. Congratulations on making a lovely song your own 👏
It's not totally accurate to call it their alumnae song. All the Yale singing groups have a signature song that they invite alums in the audience to come up and sing with them. It's traditionally at the end of their concerts. This group is all seniors, and the song just seems fitting for that time of life. It's about saying goodbye, ties that bind, not knowing what the next step on the path is going to be. I can't remember if I first heard the song by this group or the Roches, but I love both versions. They do each have sort of a different flavor. This one is more nostalgic and the Roches is more...defiant? It is curious that they changed the lyrics and left out "Why don't you face the facts, you old upstart. We fall apart." I think it's because, for them, it's a song about leaving and coming back together.
Thank you. It’s a beautiful song to continue singing. As far as the meaning, I know the song from the Roches’ original recording and have understood it to be about a friend or sister who was leaving home to follow a bad relationship. Taking out the lines about “going with that fella” and “throwing your life away” would make it more open to interpretation. In any case, it’s such a beautiful tune, with gorgeous harmonies, that I can understand why an a cappella group would want to adapt it.

Beautiful..great job
.
y'all did this song justice.
Outstanding! What a lovely arrangement and performance. The Roches would be so proud.
"By the Roaches"? :) Editor please. The sisters' French name - Roche - means 'rock' and suits their solidity.
A worthy arrangement and rendition of a classic song. Did i miss it… Who made the arrangement? And… The Roches, indeed.
beautiful!!
Lovely, but you've spelled "The Roches" wrong in your description :(
Folks in NYC doing a song about Hammond Louisiana... awesome
Love this song. I wonder why this is their alumnae song?
