How to make Wind Chimes (that sound really good)

- This time I'm making some wind chimes. One for a gift and one for me to keep. This is a fun project using some Electrical Conduit, and Fishing line, for the chimes.

My Dad had wind chimes just like this kind. He loved them. He told me one morning he went outside and found all the chimes bent in half. He said, he quickly got the message that perhaps some neighbour may not have loved his wind chimes as much as he did. That was the last of my Dad’s wind chimes. So funny. We laughed so hard at the story. So now whenever I here chimes, I think of my Dad. He passed about 5yrs ago.

These are pretty much the same as the wind chimes I made except instead of the conduit, I used beer cans. And instead of stringing them up, I just toss them into the yard after drinking the beer. The wind still blows them around the same though.

No need for expensive materials and tools...I made mine with off-cuts of 50mm curtain rods and a Ryobi hand drill a jig-saw and a file. 5 tubes, top disc and clapper, tear-drop shaped piece of leather from an old school brief-case...lovely tones!

I made a wind chime a few years ago with the tubes from another chime. I guess you could say that I repaired the chime, but I had to make all the wood parts from scratch. Instead of drilling one hole for an eyelet, I drilled 2 holes in the location of the chime and then used one long piece of line for the whole thing. Instead of fishing line though, I used the stuff they use for making jewelry. It's as thick as strong fishing line but it has a steel core coated in plastic. And it's extremely flexible. That was a few years ago and the wind chime is still going. Honestly, the line is the only thing I would change from your build. The line can also simply be crimped instead of tying. Although you can tie it also. Thank you for the great video. You have a new subscriber.

@@homebuiltshop I just re-watched the video. Still enjoyed it. I'm finally in a position where I can do more projects and this is what I'm choosing as one of the first projects. Also, recording that extra footage is where you get the "Bloopers". LoL!

Great video. Thanks. Just a note for someone who may not be a fisherman. Easiest way to cut squirmy fishing line is with finger nail clippers. However I used aluminum wire for durability.

The reason you want to drill the thread hole in different places for different length chines is what is called the node or nodal and anti node or anti nodal points. This has to do with the vibration of the chime. The middle and ends vibrate the most and the anti nodal points vibrate the least and if done perfectly(not around this shop) doesn't vibrate at all.

not it's not a good chocie at all..it's an endangered species of hardwood...think of the planet when you'remaking windchines...
give up on rare hardwoods...use recycled wood and some paint..same effect ..lots less impact. If you're a planet health denier...thenyou don't belong here anyway.
I did this too and found that painting them really cut the lasting tone . The second resonating tones. I redid it with out paint and sounded way better . Awesome vid !

Jeff, What a great video. You not only describe step-by-step on this project clearly but your sense of humor is appreciated. My workshop is similar to yours and I really enjoy building things like the windchimes to give as gifts. At times (as any workshop enthusiast would agree) things can get frustrating and your humor is spot on for stuff like breaking critical parts and having to repeat visits to the store for small stuff. I have found you just have to walk away sometimes and laugh at the stupid stuff that is bound to happen. Plus it gets your creative juices going trying to figure out solutions 'on the fly'. I discovered after watching your video that a flashlight shining from one end of the tubes will illuminate any burs on the inside. Just a hack I figured out. Keep up the good work and thanks for the informative video!

Found a broken one of these and I am repairing it. Instead of fishing line I am using a leather cord. Thank you for the eyelet idea this one was just hung with more fishing line. The chain and eyelets will make this more durable. I need that in West Texas.
Well done... I used a guitar tuner to adjust the length of pipes to get perfect pitch on each tube... my next set I'm going to make out of exhaust pipe.
I thought about trying to use a tuner to get it exact. Exaust Pipe should sound cool. I bet it starts getting pretty low toned with the bigger pipe.

Cool project. Just an FYI, the pipe cutter should have a burr tool. It's a flip out triangle. 😎👍
It does but I feel the file gets it smoother. Either way works though.
Also if you work with conduit much, there is a specific "conduit reamer" tool (Klein & Greenlee both have it) with a screwdriver handle, makes quick work of that. Standard tool belt pouch item for most any electrician.

nice video! to prevent broken screws scraping them over beeswax or over a bar of soap works as well, and pre drilling deep enough so they don't bottom out is a must in hard woods!
Thanks. I have gotten used to waxing the screws now. It works much better.
Beeswax or parowax but avoid soap, especially if exposed to high humidity (like outside). Long term the moisture can cause cheapo hardware to rust into wood fibers & maybe rust through. Those eye screws have a thin plating at best.

You were very smart wearing a dust mask when sanding purple heart. But you should've worn it when bandsawing and routing it as well. And completely enclosed eye goggles.

Nice build I've used purple hart in the past it looses it's color if it's out side ,you can oil it easier to refinish if you choose to .on the acrylic sail sand the edges like you did then use a blow torch the edges will turn clear no sanding marks great job on the chimes

I was surprised that aluminum tubing worked. It was thicker and a harder aluminum (7075?) than some. I used that guy's site for some advice and they mightn't be at perfect pitch but they sustain and are well-liked. The slight dissonance makes for a mysterious sound, so I'm happy.
I really think you could use most anything. I too like a little bit of dissonance.
You asked... Aesthetics - Need to lose the 'chain' and replace it with the line you used to hang the pipes. The chain sticks out like a sore thumb, gaudy. I love these kinds of chimes. I have a pair that are tuned to C mas 9. Thanks for the video... I think I might try and make one!

I really enjoyed your video on how to make wind chimes I wanted to make some wind chimes out of some electrical pipes that I had leftover from when I had my electric done in my house and a 10 and I didn't want to throw them away so when I saw your video I saw one video once before I don't know what the guy's name was but he had a similar video on how to make wind chimes out of pipes to but I really enjoyed yours because you are very detailed you are very descriptive you show everything you tell us everything that you're doing and what you're using for tools so it gives me an idea of what I need to have before I get started because I was clueless before the guy that showed before he didn't really give you you a whole lot he showed you how but I needed some very specific Direction so you really nailed it and I want to thank you and I enjoyed you thank you so much

I've found that the 50lb line will degrade in the sun after a full season with weight on it.
I replaced the line with picture frame wire. A tad clunky but far more durable. Chimes still sound good too. Thanks for the build advice.
I wonder if different brands of line have different properties. So far, I haven't had one of these break. They've been outside in the elements since I made them. Thanks for sharing your experience. Its something to take note of.

Next time you want to get the burrs from the tube holes, use either a round, half round, or oval jewellers file from the outside.

Large deep or tough wood screw insertion trick -- save and utilize all those small slivers of shower/bath bar soap. It makes a great no-mess lubricant.

I didn't know wind chimes were so technical to make. I thought you just cut the pipe different lengths and hang. I didn't even think about tuning them.
I always thought that too. Turns out theres quite a lot that goes into it. Who knew!
