    Thank you. I just found out that my 3rd great grandparents (Eastwoods) were married there in 1817 at St. James Chapel. He was a weaver.

    I loved this video. I live in the U.S. but my father was descended from the Farrar family of Heptonstall and Ewood Hall at Mytholmroyd. They were a gentry family of the 1400’s and 1500’s in the area who were in the cloth business in London. One of the younger sons went to Virginia in 1618 with Lord De la Warr, the colonial governor, and was an ancestor of my father. I am told the earlier family was buried in St. Thomas Becket church in Heptonstall. I hope to visit the area on another trip to England in the future.

      Ha ha Heptonstall really is as idyllic as it gets! I suppose the price for all that serenity is climbing a very steep hill every day up from Hebden Bridge, but it would certainly be worth it to live in a place as spectacular as this :)
      Thank you so much for watching - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!

      Living in a small community like Heptonstall you have to respect your neighbours because you see them every day, and with houses being so close together you don't just upset one but many, which can make life difficult. ;)

      And an expensive one these days ! I wish I'd known what would happen to prices there because I in the early 70's I could have bought Longfield House (at 1:20) for less than the cost of the computer I'm writing this on !

    I go to Heptonstall every week and it is a pure delight and your video does it justice. Just a little story for you. The open fireplace in the Cross Inn was opened in 2014 up after being hidden away for 250 years. I was there when it was reopened. Read up on the Cragg Vale Coiners and the Cross Inn to know why

    What a beautiful church - was there any reason why they didn't protect the medieval church from the elements? as an historical and important building to be preserved for posterity...

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's an interesting question - as far as I understand the official practice of protecting/listing buildings for historical purposes only began in 1882, with more widespread protection coming in through the 20th century. I assume then - as the original church was largely ruined by the floods in the early 19th century - that nobody really thought to protect it from the elements, but I'm delighted that it's now a Scheduled Ancient Monument, and is regularly looked after in its current state :)
      I hope that was helpful - it's a really good question to ask though! Thank you very much for watching - I do hope that you enjoyed the video!

    I used to live in Hebden Bridge in the '80s and nearly bought a house in Heptonstall, I dread to think how much it would be worth now, the locals can't afford to live here, so it's normally commuters from Manchester or Leeds.

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @KeithLancaster-df4ir

    The video is interesting but not quite accurate. Visitors don't have to climb up the hill as there is a regular bus service from Hebden Bridge. Also the cobbles were not laid in the 1980's but, uncovered then and it was decided to leave them on top to slow down the traffic.
