I used to be in the Methodist Church. I learned from reading the new testament that God's people were never called Methodists, and as the result I understood that methodism exists without divine authority. God's people were called Christians because they followed Christ, not the teachings of John Wesley. (1 Peter 4: 16) A person cannot believe and obey the New Testament, and become a Methodist. Why not believe and obey the New testament and become a Christian by believing, changing one's ways, and being immersed into Christ Jesus in order to be forgiven of all past sins? (Acts 2:38; Acts 22:16; Romans 6:3-4; 1 Peter 3:21; John 14:6)
Well number 1 John Wesley was never intending to start a denomination. It was really a very vibrant revival movement. Then the movement branched out and it just became a denomination. 2. Methodists are Christians, we place primary authority in the teachings of Christ, as did John Wesley. Methodists are so because we believe that the way John Wesley organized was the most effective way to disciple. Methodism is not a replacement for our identity in Christ just a word used to describe the way we do church.
