I was wondering if using another more objective assessment to classify growth failure/short stature with malnutrition (indicating a chronic disease or malabsorptive disorder) would be more useful and practical than comparing weight age to height age. For instance, using a weight for height SD or BMI SD.
Thanks for the input. We have shown that a BMI SDS less than -1.5 suggests the nutritional cause of growth failure. This is incorporated in our algorithms for Growth Interpreter.

Also how important is the inflammatory markers testing in the scenario of suspected malnutrition or chronic disease as a cause of growth failure?
