  • To kick off Tomb Raider month this year I thought it would be fun to do a good old fashioned Top 10 list of some of the best levels in the Tomb Raider franchise. Now first and foremost this is just my personal list of favorite levels, so don’t attack me in the comments, but I do encourage you to comment your own favorite levels and what you love about them. So sit back and relax because here is my list of the top 10 levels in Tomb Raider.

    Those Maria Doria levels always creeped me out!
    Number 1 for me is the Barkhang Monastery. I just loved having the monks on my side.

      Barkhang Monastery is one of thr best levels I've ever played in any game ever! The amount of exploration, traps and interesting puzzles is right on spot. This level along with Lost Valley from TR1 summarizes well why I love this franchise so much!

      @gianmariaroza6084 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I second this.
      Barkhang Monastery is one of the best level design and level story in the main trilogy and beyond.
      You have allies if you manage not to hit them.
      You have this HUGE spiritual and beautiful place to explore.
      And you will be constantly attacked by horde of enemies.

    Angel of darkness might've had alot of issues, being basically incomplete and all, but I think it has the most atmospheric levels, my favorite being the Hall of Seasons. It is just so breathtakingly beautiful - the colors, the puzzles, the potential it had; it's truly top tier, for me.

    One of my fav. levels is "Thames Wharf" from TR3.
    To me it is the most atmospheric level. Climbing over rooftops at night, light rain, in some windows are the lights on, you can hear a train in the distance...
    My fav. level in TR2 are the "Floating Islands".

  • @Azure029

    The Nevada level really gave me a lot of Half-Life vibes, not just because of the environment but also because that 90s graphical style

    I really liked the Tibetan foothills where you first get the snowmobile. The music when you 1st start riding then the break taking jump. You knew she was going to make it but it just looks so good.

  • @TheHufflepuffSaint

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only person in the world who loves Eraser. Such an underrated Arnie flick and those EM Guns are so awesome imo.
    2. My favourite Tomb Raider Level has to be Burning Croft Manor in Underworld. It's heartbreaking but also exhilarating traversing the burning corridors that you could explore in Anniversary and Legend in a more open way to the point that you try to look out for things that you can do in those games like when you rip Lara's bedroom door from its frame and you can see her four post bed and wardrobe through the flames. And not to mention that the box you use in one of the burning corridors is from the Tokyo level in Legend and I love that crossover. 💜☺️

    • @CursedWheelieBin
      @CursedWheelieBin ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s not terrible but …. it’s like a knock off Arnie movie that just so happens to star Arnie. It’s just not quite there 😄
      Even the line “you’re luggage” after shooting a CG gator is kinda meh 🐊

  • @TM-jq6fe
    @TM-jq6fe ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I really loved the Tibetan monastery level from TR 2, and in the third game, my favorite levels are the ones in London. After clearing India, I always go to the South Pacific and then to Nevada. That way, when I start the first level in London, I take a moment to look at my surroundings, and hear the sound of cars in the background, and I say to myself "Ahh, back in civilization ."

    • @CursedWheelieBin
      @CursedWheelieBin ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I remember that one. The Tibetan monks would fight the baddies for you. That is, of course, until you accidentally shoot at them off-camera. Then they’re coming after you! 😂
      I wouldn’t have seen half these levels without the step left, right, left, right, left, left, left, backwards, turn around three times, then do a 180 front flip cheat.
      I think that’s the cheat anyway. I’m trying to remember and don’t wanna search for it 🤔

    My favourites are the haunted island levels in Tomb Raider Chronicles. Especially Gallows Tree. Such a creepy atmosphere, sound design/soundtrack. Still stuck with me after all these years. Remember being stuck forever on the water demon section because I didn't realise you just had to swim to a slightly lower level. And the priest's hair went white after a spooky encounter. Brilliant.

    • @waqasbadar300

    There’s just too much nostalgia in original TR for me to pick a handful of levels! I just love it all … Lara was my childhood hero! Any Egyptian level was always my go to though

  • @andrewuk2781
    @andrewuk2781 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Great picks! I am happy to see love thrown at Maria Doria (and I assume 40 Fathoms by extension). These are to this day some of the most atmospheric and tense levels in any video game. And technological limitation at the time really add to it.

    I think what made the original games and the Anniversary-Legend era so great was the meticulous, thoughtful level design. They really went deep into creating locations with the action, movement and puzzle solving in mind. They weren't a simple open environment exercise with baddies and objects thrown in. TR2 and Last Revelation were loaded with areas which were rewarding to explore. Venice was one of my faves which kicked off the top tier Tomb Raider 2.

  • @vindifference
    @vindifference ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You're a sucker for the presentation. And so am I, so I respect it.
    I love different levels for different reasons, but one of the things at the forefront when remembering them is always the aesthetics. And for that, TR2's Tibet, TR3's Coastal Village, Legend's Nepal, and Underworld's Remnants are the first big standouts that come to my mind. TR 2013 also has some real beauty in it when you visit areas at sunset, but it's rarely ever that time of day during the story.

    I remember being so hyped for TRU and all I had as a child was a PS2... yeah, needless to say I was a little disappointed in Thailand since that's what I saw in the Trailers and Gameplay vids back then. Lara looked like she was 30 years older than on PC but when I finally got to play it on PC after a few years I was so blown away! If they only had gotten a little more time for development to straighten out the bugs and the sometimes janky controls, this would've been one of the best TR games out there

  • @candybeans

    I’m surprised Venice wasn’t on the list cuz the way the level presents itself is so good with the music and canals that make it feel relaxing to play through. Also I think the reason none of the levels from the Survivor Trilogy made it on the list is because there isn’t anything rememberable or distinct about them and just feel like something that you see in any AAA game.

      I tried to start a new game and was bombarded with these countless niche options that I had to choose in order to proceed.

    As a child who loved exploring the forests near my home, any stage in the series that features a forest or area with large vegetation wins my heart (1st place and the early stages in India in TR3 are great examples)

  • @thatsagoodone8283
    @thatsagoodone8283 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When I was younger, I always considered aspects of TR to be scary. Like the giant spiders in the Crystal Dynamics games (Underworld, Anniversary, Legend). Or the tiger back then in TR2. Always got me so stressy.
    Then I wondered why games like Resident Evil were so clunky in comparison and why there would not be a horror TR.
    Nowadays I think because the more control you have, the less horror you feel. Like Left4Dead. If you have really nice movement, you have a stronger weapon than any gun. Because you can always outrun the AI.
    Back in the day, you often had to just jump onto a table if the enemy was forced to use melee combat :o)

      If you’re a modern gamer like me: Start with Legend, then Anniversary, then Underworld.
      If you’re into dated retro stuff then I suppose you could slog through the original trilogy. Even back when they first came out I kinda got bored with the scuffing of Lara’s feet through these grid-like environments. They just seemed very experimental and incomplete

    I love the Maria Doria levels!! They are my favourites. And the Floating Islands, it is eerie and beautiful.
    And I can understand including The 13th floor. While this level (and the other 2) are the worst levels in the whole game (and I almost couldn't finish the last one because it is a bug fest), visually are amazing. I wish they were better (and less buggy), because I really liked the setting.

    St Francis' Folly is by far the best Tomb Raider level imo. It's absolutely glorious!!!
    I don't know if it counts as a "level", but the Baba Yaga DLC in Rise Of The Tomb Raider was so much fun for me.

    My favorites: All of the London ones, especially Aldwych. Venice from TR2. All the Atlantis ones and Area 51, with the eerie aliens bodies

    Awesome choices and awesome content as always!
    As a lifelong TR fan, my favorites are:
    Temple Of Xian (TR2)
    Diving Area (TR2)
    The Cistern (Original TR 1996)
    The Lost Valley (Original TR 1996)
    Aldwych (TR3)
    Lost City Of Tinnos (RE3)
    Atlantis (Original TR 1996)
    Natla's Mines (Original TR 1996)
    St. Francis' Folley (TR 1996)
    Barkhang Monastery (TR2)
    I love the huge, challenging open levels from the classic TR Trilogy, with the original being my all-time favorite.

    For me Maria Doria was so annoying, the train level would be my number 1 and I STILL want to know after all these years where she kept those weapons in the Tokyo level.

    I always love the tombraider series even tho i'm very bad at them only 100%ing and beaten few of them.
    I know this is overrated opinion but St Francis Folly is still my favourite TR level in the original more than the remake, for 1996 it's a very smartly designed level and I never get tired of climbing up and down the main room. Also that one shot secret near the start is one of my favourite secrets.
    I love the Venice and Opera House levels, these levels can be unfair to newcomers but I love the use of using the boat to travel around and used at the end level. As a kid who enjoyed theatre I just love how creepy and messed up the Opera House looks. I never got round to beaten TR3 or 5, I did TR4 with a friend when stayed over for a week. Angel of Darkness ironically is the first TR game I even beaten as a kid.
    Back in the day I did beat the TR1 remake alot more before I finished the original game and I personally feel most of the level design is superior in the original 1996 game because there is alot of complex navigation from area to area with consistent welldone platforming, however the remake has so many transition corridors or death corridors that their disguised loading areas really take away the charm of the original also some puzzle additions in the remake didn't feel necessary.
