  • In this video we take a look at why a kayak flips. I string a kayak between to trees and have P5 demonstrate why kayaks flip on the river and some ways to avoid getting wet.

This is essential knowledge for sea kayaking too. When a breaking wave hits you from the side, it does the same thing, and bracing and recovery is exactly the same as this. The wave will push you sideways, and the water buildup on the shore side will want to roll you towards the beach and window shade you. Edge and brace into the wave to prevent window shading.

Chlid labour works every time :D Seriously - even most of us knew this, but the demo was anyway brilliant idea. I’m a calm water paddler on big waters aka. recreational weekend paddler, so my world is some way different than fast rivers or white water, but basics are always same-same - water is water is water. I really like your style to explain and your latest videos have been more and more informative (and still I like kayak/backpacking/trip videos too, because those tell more than most of viewers understand). And big hand for the most valuable point: you haven’t forgotten us beginners AND you don’t go too deep in the word of different gizmos. Sure, kayaks, paddles etc are really important but a tool is as good as user. Keep going good work!

ok… ok… i have questions i think this video may apply but not sure. I am a big person paddling a big fishing kayak and the seat is high, so high center of gravity. I come thru a bend in the river with some strong current, i make it through the bend but at the end, the swirling current catches me and dumps me right out of the boat. Would leaning (edging) downstream help this?

    • @RiverKingsKayak

  • @ChristelVinot

so yeah.. I know this stuff. It's easy to know it. But despite knowing that I'm supposed to lean into it, not grab the side of the boat and all that... I still do the exact wrong thing every time. So even though I know the right thing to do, I just never do it. How do you actually do it, instead of just knowing that you're supposed to do it? lol
