      Because she is making vinegar wrong... It's already an easy two step process. You have to turn it into alcohol first which requires an anaerobic environment. After that you do the step she is showing. The coffee filter is not air-tight, which allows bacteria in to consume the alcohol, turning it into vinegar.

      You are SO sweet!! My blouse was rubbing a lot on the mic this time - LOL!! - but I will eventually get the hang of it. All of this equipment used to belong to my son and I am so impressed with it!! I am grateful he left it for me when he went to college and encouraged me to start a TH-cam Channel!! I wish that I could put a card to your channel in my video, but TH-cam won't let me do that until I have 1,000 subscribers/4000 watch hours and am accepted into the "Partner Program". Once I can do that, I will link directly to your channel in the video. I am so grateful to you for all I have learned!! :-) Love, Mary

      I did not realize they had changed it that much since I got started right at two years ago. However, I can understand the importance of making sure people are serious and are going to have good and consistent content first with so many new channels being started every day now. I think you will grow quickly though and should get the amount of subscribers and views you need in no time :)

      Rain Country - Yes, it really has changed a lot from what I have heard from other people. But I forge on. 😀 It’s really fun. And I can put in cards to other videos that I have made that might get people interested in other topics. But once, I meet TH-cam’s requirements, then I can link to other peoples videos using the cards. I think you are right. They want to make sure that people are going to stick with it and also to make sure that they are putting up helpful or entertaining content. I just love your channel and so happy I discovered it from Dough and Stacy!! Love, Mary ❤️😘❤️

    Mary, can you use other kinds of sugars other than cane sugar for making vinegar? I have a sensitivity to cane sugar. But perhaps the fermenting process changes the cane sugar into something harmless to me. Not sure. I think I'd rather use coconut sugar or some other sugar than cane. TY for your time and great info!

    Hello Mary,
    I so love all your cooking and creating videos! So I tried the strawberry scrap vinegar, so pretty and I got the strips to test ph.. looking at the dipped strip looks like a 5 to me... so tried my organic purchased apple cider vinegar and its the same color. Thinking it's probably good to go?? Also I opened one of the sealed strained bottles .....let's just say it coated me and my entire kitchen, so much pressure !! Still have another 2 bottles
    Is that normal? Can It be used?
    Thanks again!! Love your videos!!

    • @MarysNest
      @MarysNest  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Thank you SO much for the kind words...you are SO sweet!! I usually decant it into a glass bottle with a plastic top - similar to the ones vinegar comes in at the grocery store. I think vinegar can pretty much last indefinitely. There are "expatriation" dates at the ones sold at the grocery store because I think there are laws about all that. But personally, I have never worried about it. All I have found is that overtime, it just gets stronger. Love, Mary

    Hi Mary, Thanks for this great idea. It took me three tries before I was successful but I was able to make the strawberry vinegar. Here's the mistakes I think I made for others to know. I don't think I stirred low enough in the jar and the sugar wasn't being stirred enough to feed the scraps and it was too cold in my house. This time I placed it on top of my refrigerator that's in my garage and it worked perfectly. Next time I'm going to test it at 25 days because it is actually a little acidic for my taste. However, now that I have it, I was trying to find recipes to use it in but I can't find any. Mary, do you have a salad dressing, etc. that I now can use this vinegar in? Thank you for your great ideas.

    I have a question. I am using a 64 oz mason jar. I put 1/2 a cup of sugar in on day one and then another 1/2 cup of sugar in on day 5. I'm on day 13 everything looks and smells as if it is going well. My question is, did I mess up by putting more than 1/4 cup at a time? I thought I had more than what was described in the video and I doubled everything because I thought I had so many more strawberries from my jam and I also thought I had a larger jar. I could use some insight. I'm hoping I didn't mess it up. Loving your videos. I'm super happy I stumbled across them 😊

      mary nguyen - Hi Mary, Thanks so much for visiting! The formula is the same. Fill a 1/2 gallon jar 1/2 full with carrots and beets, add 1/4 cup sugar, and fill with water leaving about 2 inches of head space. Stir everyday. After a few days, add another 1/4 cup of sugar. You should have vinegar after 30 days. So glad you’re here!! Love, Mary❤️😘❤️

    Thank you for this! In a few days, I will be decanting my vinegar. Does it still need to breathe or can I cap it tightly?

    HIYA Mary :-D
    I've had this video up ever since you posted it. I do that on videos that I want to comment on, but, don't have the time right at that minute. So, here I am, 10 days later, at 5am, HOPEFULLY with a few minutes for myself. You're SUCH a SWEETHEART, and I am THOROUGHLY enjoying your videos!!! I NEVER seem to tire of vinegar videos. Heidi got me HOOKED. LOL! Please do a video on apple cider vinegar and any other vinegars you feel moved to make. I will be here to watch them :-D
    I"d LOVE to know where you got that really loooong chopstick! I've searched the internet, and all I can find are the "cooking" chopsticks that are fancy, and painted on the top. Problem is ... the paint comes down past the top of a half gallon jar.
    Might you have a link to Amazon for the test strips?
    Love & prayers

      Hi Kathleen!! YOU are the Sweetheart!! Hmmm...that is a good question about the chopsticks!! My husband is of Asian ancestry so we have a lot of those around the house that my MIL has given us but I am not sure where those specific ones came from. They are 10 1/2 inches long. These are similar: amzn.to/2OUBttV Also, those test strips are great - they come in all different varieties. You can get individual strips or a roll. Here are the ones I use: amzn.to/2N6DJxS Hope these links help! (Affiliate Links). As always, thanks so much for visiting my channel!! You are the best!! Love, Mary

    Love your videos!
    I had a gallon of fresh apple cider that I experimented with. I put a coffee filter on the top, and left it. First it got fizzy and tasted alcoholic, pretty yummy actually. But then I left it longer, and after about a month it tasted like really strong vinegar, and has a mother.
    I'm wondering why people don't make cider this way, and if there's a difference?

    Thanks Mary, you put anyone to rock with great passion for decanting our own vinager.
    Have you used those brown bottles to store the new decanted vinager to slow the acidity doesn't go sky rocketing after decanting the vinager ?
    Be blessed !

    Update, Mary I’ve made my strawberry vinegar following you and I’m now ready to bottle. Following you made it easy and mine vinegar is the same colour as your and taste great.. I used the tops and frozen whole strawberries. Now I’m ready to start apple cider vinegar. I do have a question do you have a video how to make hard cider? Thanks you are the best.

      Hi Joyce, glad to hear the strawberry vinegar turned out great. Hope the Apple cider vinegar will too. I don’t have a video on hard cider. So sorry about that! The ACV I show how to make is using apples. But I don’t make apple cider first. I just hate to waste Apple cider to make apple cider vinegar Love, Mary❤️🤗❤️

    Hi Mary, I have made the strawberry vinegar. I started it on 1/29 and followed the directions you gave. I am seeing what looks like mold on the top. Do you think my vinegar will be ok?

    Mary what a great idea. Could you use pasteurized honey instead of sugar? Thanks!!!

    • @MarysNest
      @MarysNest  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a good question. I think because it’s pasteurized, it might work. The good bacteria need something to eat. Generally honey is antibacterial but if it’s been pasteurized, it may be OK. It’s worth a try. Love, Mary
