    My son rescued a giant crow, he got his foot caught in our fence and the dog was trying to kill it. I grabbed the dog out of the way and he grabbed the bird. That crow and his 3 crow buddies were so grateful, they thanked us loudly, and from then on they were regular guests in our yard. I love birds! Even the hawks, though I used to throw small rocks at the hawks and yell at them for messing with the birds. Watching a mixed flock chase a hawk down the street, fricken hilarious!

    I love ravens. I've rescued two ravens in trouble at different times and I swear, they tell their friends about me. Now ravens come to sit and watch me do things in the yard or sometimes follow my car. People thought I was crazy when I told them about these things. I could probably make friends with the ones in our neighborhood really easily... Perhaps I shall...

      You're very lucky to have local ravens; I've always wanted to befriend some, but they seem to be incredibly rare in my area. Plenty of packs of crows, to include a fairly large conspiracy that frequents the empty field by my shop, but so very few ravens...
      Though, a great many years before I bothered looking up the difference between ravens and crows, I did spot what I thought was a HUGE crow by our local airport one time... Most likely a raven, but again I didn't have the time to stop and find out, nor the knowledge to differentiate. Also, the crows in the aforementioned murder that comes around are quite large for crows!! But, audibly, behaviorally, and by the tail shape, you can tell they're crows.
      (Also, I absolutely love the amount of different punny words used to describe groups of corvids; murder, conspiracy, board meeting, etc...)

      It takes time, I've been feeding my local neighbourhood birds, including the crows and other birds, as wild birds they are instinctively cautious of humans as large predators regardless of whether or not you feed them, so giving them space and walking away to let them feel safe is important to let them trust you, then they will come to you and become closer to you in their own time. After feeding my local birds including the crows for the last 6 months, my crows call me, sit on top of my roof, wait for me, watch over me making sure I'm safe when I cross the road. They're very sweet, they let me do my thing, I let them do my thing, we coexist in harmony. Good luck with yr birds too. ✌

      Try peanuts, peanuts are like crack to birds. Also dont try to rush it, or try to get close to the birds with any sort of trickery as the crows/ravens will 100% notice and get sketched out. Just take it slow and let them start to build trust in you. Also another thing ive noticed is that you should generally try to look at them with only one eye in a sort of side glance. Birds generally wont use both of there eyes to look at something unless there really concentrating on it, and will generally do the side look if there in a more chill mood. Crows/ravens can get sketched out if you stare at them straight on lol.

    Ravens are such amazingly intelligent birds, although once while hiking up cowles mountain in SD, I witness an Ariel combat between a pair of red tail hawks and several ravens, it was hard to tell who was winning but it did appear the raven were playing around just to aggravate the hawks, and another time I watch a pair of nesting falcons, with four babies, chase off a small flock of ravens!! Raven in this case were no match for the smaller determine falcons. Wish I had had a camera, but this was years ago... keep up the cool videos!! Peace

      In my area, ravens will take on and the kids will play with all kinds of hawks. But adult ravens will always ground themselves and they'll make a very unique growl when the falcons (we have peregrines) are there. Some years the kids will play in the air with the falcons, and I have a couple videos on my channel showing them doing so. As of yet, I haven't witnessed none being caught and killed by a falcon will I was there, but there's so many close calls I fear it's only a matter of time. The adults ground themselves and watch the kids and they won't do anything until the falcon decides enough and is leaving anyway, then the adult raven might take off after it and make sure it leaves their territory. Fascinating to watch! Thanks for you story!

They know us as "the noisy humans that try to talk Ravenspeak" because that's exactly what I do every day. I've mastered several of their territorial cries, a few of their food-here quarks, and the female's click-clicks to some extent. Second, um "Emerald Triangle?" like we're talking California right? : ) I could could go a number of different ways on this one ... and ask a number of silly questions, like any changes in the birds demeanor or behavior when sitting above "partying" partakers? Do they tend to eat more, more often? 😆 Anyway look forward to your future posts and certainly look forward to any link to videos or sound you post!

Unfortunately since 1972 it' been illegal to have ravens and crows for pets. This is a sad law in my opinion because prior, there where many people who had crows and ravens for pets, and they made great pets. In fact many chose to go back to the wild and then would come back for visits. To me, that's an awesome pet! Thanks for writing and for sharing your love for the birds!

    I bet you’ve noticed this before too: Sometimes, when driving on a highway, I will notice a group of ravens on the road, as if there was something tasty to eat, like roadkill. Yet, approaching closer, they all fly up and scatter with nothing to be seen on the road except a stain of blood of some unfortunate animal that got killed by a car. What’s the meaning of this? There is really nothing left to eat, yet Ravens will congregate at places like that, flying right back to the spot once a car has passed. Almost seems like some ritual. Any clues?

    • @theravendiaries
      @theravendiaries 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps? A couple times I've actually gotten out of the car to look and have been surprised to see some very minuscule quantity, hardly visible to the naked eye, of remains still there smashed into the assault. They will try to get very tiny bit.
      In one of my latest, on our winter road trip, I caught a fairly large group picking at what looked like nothing to me, but it happened to be a very small amount of food below the ice in a fast food restaurant in Moab. I even caught kind of what I would call a rare scrabbling moment where two seemed to be singling out another and chased it away.

    • @petes9878
      @petes9878 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@theravendiaries / Good observation and very likely very true.
      But I did have additional ponderings about this (which may not make sense to most, but then again, I’m not ‘most’).
      What is blood really? That is if one considers its function in any body. Does it represent spirit or soul of a being? To which I tend to ask: If it is spirit or soul or whatever that’s left on the road, could it be that Ravens know and recognize this and hang around not only because ‘it’s food’, but as a sort of act of reverence for a life passed.
      You’ve probably read Ravens in Winter, an observation by Bernd Heinrich. I found it fascinating those many years ago.
      As a sort of follow-up to it, a biologist came to Anchorage to study the local Ravens there, who typically hang around fast food waste bins in large parking lots. The idea was to trap a number of them, fit them with tracking equipment in order to learn where they roost at night. Those of us who paid attention to Ravens knew, that they routinely fly into the mountains come night time, but how far? Well, this biologist attempted to find out.
      He rented a van with a sliding side door, fitted with a contraption that would shoot out a large net to capture several Ravens at one time. He would then fit the radio collars and let them go, tracking electronics ready for action. Unsuspecting, Ravens didn’t see anything wrong with his van parked near a trash bin. With the first try only two Ravens were caught, the others reacted too quickly. Not a problem for the biologist, he would just have to try again.
      However, no matter where in the Anchorage area he went to try his luck, wherever he parked, Ravens would not come to feed. The project came to a halt and we still don’t know how far into the Chugach Mountains our Winter Ravens fly to safely roost for the night.
      Somehow Ravens area-wide were able to communicate to look out for a white van, trying to capture ‘us’ and to stay away from it.
      It’s stuff like that, which makes me wonder if there is more than food that makes Ravens gather in large groups around blood-stained parts of our roads. Just a thought ; -)

      @@petes9878 Funny, in the 20 years I've spent with "my" birds, I still can't figure out exactly where they roost at night. I've got the general areas (and each pair is different) down but that's as good as it gets. It seems they may move about night to night a little also? Keeps the Great Horned Owls guessing?
      Loved Bern's books (all of them), but found some very different traits and behavior in my west coast ravens. Most likely many reasons, first being we don't have a cold snowy winter. I also questioned some of his conclusions, like the mountain lion being led to food (a human?) stuff. My ravens naturally go on alert when any type of predator is in the area. I don't believe for a second they are leading these bobcats, coyotes, bears or mountain lions to me ...
      Great "biologist" story by the way, thanks for sharing. I keep trying to tell people science is great in classrooms, but when you actually get out into the wild, things are very different. We are dealing with beings with resolve and unique personalities.For example the whole raven communication bit seems to be one of those mysteries of life things.

      @@theravendiaries / I agree with your re: ‘when you actually get out into the wild’ observation, and I’m also glad that mysteries still exist.
      One observer explained that there is a difference between Intellect and Intelligence. The first being how we humans operate for the most part, a linear world, if one will. Intelligence however always operates in ways that includes balance and harmony with that which surrounds, supports and sustains us, without impairing the balance of the whole. Pretty much all animals operate along those terms.
      It is no wonder, that the native peoples of the Arctic considered Ravens as the creators of the world, granting them above average Intelligence.

    I see hooded crows every day and always have food for them. They know me instantly and inform others so I can have up to 20-40 crows following me. If I ride my bike they fly beside me just inches away to inform me that they have spotted me and I should give them food. Sometimes it is comical when I stop to talk some acquaintance or a friend and we are surrounded by some 30 crows on the ground patiently waiting. The way I see it is that we people caused this world to be sin ridden and that's why the Raven kind is out of paradise. They never deserved to be thrown out, so they are in fact surviving in this world because of mankind screwing it up for everyone else. Thus if I can in any way serve and help their lives to be any better, I gladly do it and consider it an honor, in fact I thank God for it every day. Cheers.

    • @theravendiaries
      @theravendiaries 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Janis, I'm not sure what part of the world you are in, but in the areas I travel the common raven has what some call a diamond shape that is most noticeable when the bird is in the air. To me, the most distinguishable traits of the raven are the sounds they make. Young ravens don't have the diamond shape of their tail until the feathers grow all the way out. But the ravens, even the young ones, make very different sounds that are easy to tell from the crows. The ravens don't CAW like a crow does.
      For a visual explanation see;
      th-cam.com/video/k9-wTnqIidY/w-d-xo.html
      and at the 1.55 mark in that video you will see the "diamond tail." Perhaps that's the V you're referring to?

      Ravens have rounder beaks, like these, whereas crows have more pointy beaks (at least here in Europe, but I think it's the same everywhere).

      I can understand how a God greater than myself could design and create something as amazing as a raven. I, to this day can't figure out how evolution could ever overcome the physics of flight let alone all the amazing symbiotic relationships a raven is a part of.
      Let me ask you, when one thanks "science" do you get an answer? Cause I swear, when I thank Jesus, I do. : )
