Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond and motor racing legend Sir Stirling Moss share the same life-altering experience - they had their lives changed forever by terrible car accidents.
The pair recovered quickly from their respective physical injuries, but the acquired brain injuries of those major impacts meant their minds took much longer to heal. But why should brain tissue take so much longer to repair itself than skin and bone and what kind of trauma does the organ go through when trying to 're-boot' itself?
In an engaging and intimate conversation punctuated by some extraordinary medical insights and archive footage of both of their accidents, the two men exchange their experiences.

When I was ten, I was in the Isles of Scilly in a tree, when I lost my balance on a particularly high branch and fell backwards out of it. I remember seeing before I fell that there was a rather sharp rock right below where I was about to fall, and as I fell I thought: "I'm going to hit that, aren't I? My back is going to break." but as Hammond said, I didn't feel any fear. I fell over six feet, which is a long way to go for a ten year old, but I just about managed to miss the rock. I landed heavily on my back, and had to be carried out on a stretcher. They initially thought I had broken my spine and that there may be permanent damage, but thanks to sheer chance I survived and within two days I was walking again.
But I still remember the sensation of falling, and everything playing before my eyes in slow motion. I will never forget it, and I know this sounds weird but I hope to feel it again some day. It wasn't scary, as I felt no fear. A death of that sort would be quick and painless, and I would rather die that way than slowly through natural causes. As a result, I am not scared of death. I'm not suicidal, but I hope that someday I am killed in an accident, which sounds like a weird thing to say.
"If I was to have a really bad accident, I would rather be killed than spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair." - Ayrton Senna (I think)

I remember when I had my head on collision on my motorbike doing 80kmh as a car jumped out in front of me. The same thought of calm exception of death came over as described in this clip. The thought that just before the impact was "I am about to have an accident that will probably kill me, and their is nothing I can do about it". It was the clearest and calmest moment of my life. Life did not flash before my eyes, but death did. It was the most realistic moment in my life.

@SuperAparition ok I know Hammond isn't the same league of racer or anything but in terms of crash survivors they are certainly equal! Hammond was doing 280 MPH when his tyre blew, he was still doing over 200 while the car was travelling upside down in the grass! Previously to the crash he was traveling at 318MPH thats faster than the official British land speed record He was extremely fortunate to survive that.

Same I was driving and I was going over some rail road tracks at night and I seen something out of the corner of my eye and of course figured it was a train I just shut my eyes and just thought that's it. After realizing that I wasn't dead I got on the brakes and looked back for what I saw and it was a stupid deer. A damn deer made me think I lost my life.

same. last year i had a car pull out infront of my motorbike. i was concussed for about 5 minutes at a guess. the bike was written off and i was bruised down my left side with a communuted collar bone in 5-6 peices. all i remembered was when the bike and myself were going towards the tarmac that "oh well this must be it" convinced i was going to die or worse. i then just recalled being sat in the ambulance and bits and peices after. i never had a scan. i have had bad crashes before and again was never CT or mri scanned. but i feel a lot more tired since and sometimes forget things people tell me

    "I'm going to die".
I cannot even begin to comprehend the significance of what Moss is saying here. Just to think about this in the safety of my study sends a chill up my spine. Just think about your steering breaking at 170 mph....My God!
I have heard so many people that have been in serious accidents say that at the moment something goes wrong, time seems to slow down. I suppose then you can become aware of the fact that you are going to die, but it's that realisation that is so profound.

  • @VonTripps
    @VonTripps 14 ปีที่แล้ว

@afthefragile ...and don't forget that the average race track didn't have crash barriers let alone viable medical equipment. Quite often the only choice was either the trees or the spectators but either way, those four words would be resonating loud inside your mind.

I've been in one significant motorbike accident and a "speed wobble" slowing down from a little over 120 on a V65 magna. The speed wobble had me thinking the exact same thing they were talking about ( "oh... Well, that's it then. Guess I won't be going out for dinner tonight."), but flying over a guardrail into the woods after being clipped by an oncoming car... It was weird. It really happenned so fast I didn't have time to think past "COCKS***ER!!".

Its wierd I had the same feeling when I was 9 I got into a 40 mp/h car crash and as soon as the car hit everything went into slow motion and I thought "this must be it my life will end at 9 and no more" but Like they said I felt no fear, Just... empty like I was sort of pointless seen although im going to die in such a standard way, nothing intresting. The only fear I had was the fear of not being rememberd I would just be a lamb to the slaughter of life. And I can never describe the feeling I felt after I woke up ALIVE! It wasnt happiness or relief it was a sort of confusion that I managed to walk away with my life and that my mother (the driver) survived aswell Im 14 now and thats impacted me in a good way for I dont fear death anymore. its wierd shit

I have respect for your brother for having gone to Afghanistan (as you'll find it's spelt)
but regardless of whether or not you believe all Hammond does is drive cars, that should not mean his possible death after his car crash is a lesser loss than some who in your opinion does more
I for one stand by what I said before and am VERY glad Hammond did not die but that does not at all mean I do not appreciate the lost lives of other non-celebrities

well, I guess we'll just have to accept our different opinions... the use of the word legend doesn't always have to apply to traditional figures such as King Arthur lets say... why can't they apply to modern figures such as Hammond...
I called Hammond a legend due to the fact that the guy nearly died and he never milked the story once, didn't feel sorry for himself and talked opnely and freely about it many times on Top Gear... to me that's significant, celebrity or not

@HHGFHJGFHJGFJTYFJDGY Yup. It's a shame with this one actually, as it feels like more of an education and a help with understanding about head injuries, rather than just an interview. I was hoping my Nan could watch it in Canada, as she had a very bad head injury when she was younger, and had to learn how to walk, talk, eat again. It would have been great for them to be able to see it too.

@HHGFHJGFHJGFJTYFJDGY I would hardly call that stupid. ITV and the advertising channels in the US get paid via advertising, yes, but that advertising isn't paid by magic. It gets paid by higher-priced goods. So you end up paying just as much (if not more) through adverts, it's merely hidden, not honestly presented and paid by everyone whether they watch TV or not. The license fee for the BBC is only paid by those with a TV. Besides, do you see ITV shows free on here? No? So what's their excuse?
