Started listening to this at 1 PM on Monday afternoon, 25 September 2017. I am age 72, retired, and if I want to listen to Bach all afternoon, I can and will. Unless the cats need attention or something, of course >^..^
Of all the works you have contributed Paul, this is a true gift to the world; I can only imagine the pleasure this will give in perpetuity, not to mention the amount of work it will inspire. Thank you.
Paul, I found you recently - 2-3 yrs ago - but somehow missed your Goldberg. Until today when seeking to lose myself in music while I pack my house for moving in one month. I love your work in Art and Music and how well you have taught Emilie in all matters of education. I follow her own narrations also. So today the Goldberg volunteered itself and I right straightaway am ordering it. This will be my “one more great work” to learn in my lifetime. (Now 83 so I will hurry.) since I’m underway with Chopin Gminor Ballade I can’t count it anymore and will add the great Bach masterpiece. Your edition is just what I needed! And your playing. OMG. Thank you and your family. From Memphis TN (via Josh Wright’s recommendation to hear you) Robin Davis, piano.
Thank you, Paul, for your generosity in sharing this project. It must have entailed an incredible amount of work, not just to play the pieces, but to work out the fingering from the original two manual score, plus to add the wonderful animated score.
The Goldberg Variations are a sublime intellectual and creative achievement by JS Bach. This format of presentation, showing four bars of score with the playing hands, also used by Paul Barton for the 48 preludes and fugues of the WTC, superbly showcases this magnificent work of genius, inviting the listener into the mind of Bach. Bravo and Thanks!
Paul, I have been listening to Bach for over forty years. It never ceases to astound me how many "great" piano players seem not to understand how to play Bach. For that reason, perhaps, it is such a pleasure to encounter a rendition like this. Your rendition of this and other works of Bach are an absolute joy to listen to. Another comment mentioned that this recording will stand in perpetuity - well, for however long there are still humans who can appreciate this form of music, it will.
I remember listening to a CD of glen Gould playing these variations. My mom would play this in her car during the ride back home from preschool. I guess classical music has always been part of my life
Bravo, Maestro Barton. What a beautiful interpretation of one of Bach's most enduring works. I concur with others here when they say that they prefer your interpretation to that of Gould's. That is high praise, indeed, as Glenn Gould is the one who made Bach relevant to the piano on the concert stage. You have a brilliant technique, and you color this work that really gives vibrancy, clarity, color, and life to Bach. As the late, great Virgil Fox said of Bach, "He is a red-blooded, living, breathing force. One who's music evolves and is relevant throughout time. Not to be relegated as a museum piece and only interpreted in the "purist's" narrow view. I am an organist, so Bach and Buxtehude are foundational to my repertoire, though I am more of a French Romantic person who loves Vierne, Dupre, Widor, Gigout, Messiaen, I still seek out and love to play Bach. I really enjoyed your interpretation; it is genius. So, I sure hope you will interpret and perform JS Bach's "The Art of Fugue".
I have listened to n Goldberg Variations recordings and I prefer this one to any other - even from Gould's or Schiff's. This guy knows how to play this, perfectly.
At publication, The Goldberg Variations were described as uplifting and enriching the spirit, a joy for amateurs and masters alike. It is not meant to be played as quickly as possible, but instead at a tempo that makes each note sing and allowing for all of the voices to be heard with clarity. It should not give anxiety or feel like a show piece, and Mr. Barton does this perfectly in my opinion.
I can't begin to thank Paul Barton enough for the enormous amount of stellar work he has contributed so far, and still continues to provide to the online piano playing community! 😃😃😃👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🤗🤗🤗🎹🎹🎹
No puedo parar de llorar y emocionarme cada vez que escucho el 1:20:00 a 1:21:00 por un perrito que tenemos...con una "edad" etc. Le pongo la música todos los días y sigue "Vive" con nosotros
You know what I love most about your interpretation? Other than the fact that it is SUPER clean.. it is very light. Like a breath of fresh air or eating a sponge cake with berries and cream. Ahhh. :) Bravo
Oh God!! Tears of Joy!!! Thank you so much for doing this Sir!! I only wish I were 40 years younger--spending hours and hours imitating your graceful, intelligent and enormously musical style. What Gift you have given us!!!!
this very satisfying video for an amateur shows how the piano repertoire is like encountering Ali Baba's cave. There within your reach as you enter are an astonishing array of musical jewels, among much else, but prominent, Bach's Inventions or several, as well as preludes and fugues and cantatas and so on. And then one day it maybe years later after practicing you can turn a corner in the cave, and reach up a bit and try to grasp by your fingertips some inkling about playing parts of the Goldberg Variations. Thanks for posting this public service
Unbelievable. Outstanding playing, and an achievement few pianists have the time or skill to have ticked off. Also, Paul is an outstanding Artist (Painter), to have such unprecedented talent at both playing piano and painting is almost unheard of, to me, anyway.
reduire les variations à seulement 3 morceaux est quand même réducteur, tant , pour moi en tout cas, elle m' ont enthousiasmé du début à la fin. L' émotion est tout le long, avec un changement d âme , presque imperceptible, à la seconde partie des variations.
You are a continual source of inspiration and a master of technique. The precision, sensitivity and control you display throughout your now vast repertoire is astounding and a sheer delight to observe and listen to. Thank you Paul.
Mam raka trzustki, ta muzyka daje mi ukojenie. Nie boli. Dziękuję. = I have pancreatic cancer, this music gives me relief. It does not hurt. Thank you. 💖💕
Hi Paul. Just bought your book Goldberg variations. I am so happy with it!!! Now I can focus more on learning instead of figuring the unknotting of my fingers 👍🏻👍🏻 thanks for the work
Interpretació excepcional: amb austeritat luterana, precisió germànica i claredat i puresa diamantines. Amb uns tempi exactes i mantinguts. Barton deixa que la tècnica esdevingui autènticament expressió, i quina expressió! Per molts anys!
Thank you Paul Barton for sharing this beautiful gift and magic music God bless you. Your videos really make me happy and learn techniques very complicated.
Thank you Paul for your great generosity in sharing this project and for the incredible dedication and hard work you must have done to bring it to fruition!
Bravo to the enormous share! What a gorgeous performance and the video format that is unmatched by none! You have inspired me to listen and learn! Thank you so much! 👏👏❤️🙏
Hey quick tip: if you change the timestamp of the Aria to 00:00 instead of 00:03, we will be able to see the timestamps and names in the TH-cam player :)
Got in late tonight after a hard day at work, only wanted to listen to Paul's piano to unwind to, the perfect music to de-stress and relax, thank you paul!
I listened to many pianists playing Bach(Dinu Lipatti amazes me with Bach and Chopin) and i may say that i really loved your interpretation and surpirsed me the "relaxed" tempo.By the way i love elephants too. Thanks and wish you the best.
This piece (aria) is beguiling for its apparent simplicity yet is possibly one of the more exquisitely difficult ones to interpret with clarity as Paul has done.
Hey Paul, Thanks for this wonderful recording. To be honest I've often had a hard time listening to Bach music. I learned to appreciate the craftsmanship in it, but there's just many aspects of it that bother my ear. Now there's a couple of these things that would often bother me in Bach, that I don't experience as such in your recording. To mention a few; I really appreciate the brightness and clarity of the sound that your recording has. As the string of 16th notes usually rattles on, melodies often becomes unclear to me... In general, ornamentations bothers me ("Unnescesary delution"), but in your playing they sound so very clean and rich. It makes me listen to them with a fresh, appreciative ear. Thanks!
Most of Bach's keyboard works sound best on a harpsichord, with a few exceptions. Goldberg Variations sounds great on either, in my opinion, but perhaps try listening to Bach on harpsichord, where the ornamentation is more appropriate due to the instruments limitations.
@@DangerRussDayZ6533 No mention of the organ in your opinion here? lol Bach was a good harpsichordist, but he was actually an organist and his work makes up the base of an organists repertoire. His and Buxtehude's. Yes, Bach's keyboard compositions, particularly his compositions for chamber music, are harpsichord based. Yet, Maestro Barton really plays them well and makes them very relevant for the piano too.

Graceful and Sublime!
B(ach) + B(arton) = a wonderful formula! How lucky we are to be blessed with this formula.
If you simplify and add like terms then it's 2Ba + Bc + Bh + Br + Bt + Bo + Bn
