Wow, when i saw that big block of green in the corner. All i could think was “how is he going to pull this one off” This is way better as a painting then it was a photograph. Congratulations you knocked this one out of the park.

Beautiful painting, Michael. The tree mass on the left sure looked a daunting challenge. But you stuck with it, and made all the right calls. End result was subtle and very natural.

Great painting! I think when we push through the hard dilemmas it's always a breakthrough of sorts. I too also spend a lot of time looking at other artist's work because I think that's how we grow, learning from others.

Thanks Brian! That's a good point about the simplicity on the left. I'm thinking about that sort of thing a lot more lately. Trying to make decisions that direct the eye to the areas that I want to feature. I miss painting with you! Hopefully we'll get to painting again sometime soon.

I've recently discovered your channel and I'm really enjoying it. Your way of framing I will be adopting because I have always added strips of thin pine around paintings at the three quarters finished stage as what I call 'studio frames', which are temporary but really help when it comes to seeing the crux of the matter at that crucial stage before finishing with them. But I have been undecided about how to go about proper framing of them. I think that the problem that you have had with this painting is that the blue of the water, or rather the reflected light of the sky above, has always been just too high in value across the whole lake. And I think this why you have struggled so much with the rocks below the surface which look now as if they are the reflections of the underside of the pine, but not rocks. To find the correct blue I would be inclined to mask off the whole lake with a sheet of paper and then concentrate upon finding the correct hue and value of blue through the sky holes only. Jeff

Great to see how you tackle obstacles and that you too have moments of doubt and the searching process of what to do. Also put a smile on my face when you mentioned Isaac Levitan. Had him pop-up (A collection of 437 paintings) some days ago and I'm still only at less than 25% of all his paintings. Absolutely awesome! What a shame to die so young. MICHAEL. - ( at 11:29 to 11 : 30 into video you make a circular motion tree limb area, that motion in the video helps to show a spiral, like a vortex, similar to your motion you make as you critique , to me you captured time in the spiral, the water through the trees you spoke of, that’s the bottom “” of the time captured” , although not being a center , because the spiral isn’t exacting spheres, just wanted to tell you of that one mental flash, also i like the painting. ) Reflections off a transparency with shadow on and through it, with a top surface and a bottom. Many things in this painting.

How you deal with only having that amount of information that the photo offers and doing an amazing painting anyways, as if it was on location. Amazing. I learn a lot from you. You could talk more in the future about how to work from a photo, what are the pitfalls, how to deal with distortion in perspective, limited information etc, what mindset to keep when doing it.

I think paintings say things, Sound, Emotion, beauty, movement, , dozen things each on these four words, you spoke to pushing, stretching yourself, viewing 200 to perhaps a 1000 different paintings sometimes per night, admiral pursuit. In your closing, at mark 12 : 41, listening to you with the crash of “ waves on the easel “ , is it just me ? I think you are getting there, you’ve touched what you’re pursuing, it tastes good, keep going.

The channel I usually watch is called LearnWtihTheMasters, maybe it's the same you watch. Man this painting you made could be my worst nightmare, all that greenery to the left...you really like to challenge yourself. As you can imagine I have a ton of pictures that I could use to paint a landscape, but I can't decide because I find them too challenging. I'll stick to paint figures and objects. Can't paint landscapes anymore, I don't know why maybe fear to fail. That's why I admire you, it's your ethics, hard work and challenges you get into. Its' like you are my painter alter ego, kind of like in the Fight Club but for real lol.

It’s unfortunate when people can edit things on social media so much that it looks like things go perfectly all the time....it’s just not realistic. I think I know why this scene was so difficult for you. Normally to paint that much detail and shades, painters would go with multiple layers, small brushes and glazing. To paint this alla prima means you would have to think like a laser printer to make this work. More importantly, this isn't the type of painting you do. It looks like something off a calendar - kind of banal. Your normal work is more interesting than this!
