    I release a weekly, Patron only podcast. This week's was about my VM usage and a bit about Discord alternatives. It's me rambling on for a bit about things that are on my mind, just for my patrons and youtube members. If you'd like to hear it, it is available to all tiers, patreon.com/thelinuxcast (or you can hit the Join button up above).

    When an abandoned project breaks. I just fix it and continue to use it. Don't need the developer. Just become one yourself.

      Same, some months I was looking for a taking-notes solution, in the same day when I left obsidian this guy uploaded a video about NB and I fell in love with this tool. So I can confirm this guy is a wizard haha.

    Great video! I used sshfs in the past as well. One thing that I had set up, which I liked more than a typical remote file server, is I was able to set the server to automatically suspend after a period of inactivity and then wake up when a network service was requested - wake on lan in the bios I believe. It was great not having to worry whether the file server was on or off. There was a noticable pause when accessing the mounted directory when the server was suspended, but still a much better experience than the alternatives that I'm aware of.

    I don't know who first pointed me towards sshfs, but I love it. All the permissions work out correctly for it unlike smb. I've got all my computers setup with static IP's on the LAN, so it's easy to reference them. If it ever dies as a project, as in maintenance becomes necessary, either I'll fork it myself or see if the current maintainer wants to hand it over, because it should definitely keep going.

    It's mature, that's why there's no development on it, it's just wrapping the ssh protocols and that's where the development is

    nice video. I too like SSHFS I use ssh keys for my home lab to eliminate having to login for each mount.

    Came across this package when trying to edit remote files and wanting to still get the benefits of my lsp server. Very nice if you'll be editing remote files for a while on a machine you can't really download a bunch of stuff on.

    sshfs also works in macOS too with homebrew, but sftp is much simpler to use and is maintained with ssh.

    I use sshfs for any network mounts I need from time to time, and nfs for anything permanent or used by services

    I don't know how many unsupported applications on my system. If it work's as attended, than I have zero problems with it. The application has reach it's goal in the developers eye. No need to continue the project if all your goals where reach when you started on that project.

    Matt - I was able to unmount by simply using the umount command. Give it a shot on your side.

      Yep, umount works for me on multiple systems. Should work for everyone is fusermount is setup fully.

    I'm not sure if you're pronouncing Samba right. I've always pronounced the first a closer to that of the first a in "salsa" or maybe like the car manufacturer, Saab. That's what I've always heard. But maybe I'm wrong.

    Great video Matt (again). I never used sshfs before. I am wondering what is the reason that you prefer sshfs over nfs (with e.g. the soft option mounted and tunneled over ash)?

    • @oscs4556
      @oscs4556 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      sshfs is encrypted and needs login credentials (you can just use your ssh keys after you ssh-copy-id to the server) and can be used remotely. Nfs is typically used on local networks without login credentials and is unencrypted - so the file transfer is faster.

    What would need to be done? sshfs is using sftp under the hood and that program is being maintained by openssh or the other ssh client distribution.
