I was wrong about the towing mirror thing- you legally need them for any trailer that is wider than your car (but from a practical, non-legal standpoint you don’t need them)
So do you need them for the frontier?
Isn't being able to see behind you practical enough of a reason lol...? Wtf.
@@toddavis8151the Cub Frontier is the almost the same width as the Prado - 1.94m v 1.88m / under 3cm each side. Technically you should get extension mirrors
@@toddavis8151teeeechnically (it’s wider by 7.5mm each side) but I have great vision behind it so never use them
@@firetofork I’m towing a Cub Scout with a Mitsubishi challenger and I have no complaints with vision. However I’m very conscientious about not breaking the law
I know Sam doesn't like to be on camera much, but it was good to see the whole family enjoying some time together. These vans are way beyond my budget, but it is good to see what is possible.
There is absolutely no way a child can be spoon-fed without you opening your mouth at the same time. Well done, you passed the, I love my kid test.
Kid with 2 kids😂😂😂
All mums make dad jokes they just think they are funnyer
No matter which way you camp, we've found the most important things are to make memories with your family.
Strangely enough we are in the middle of a series comparing all sorts of rigs. We are sharing our experience with all the different types we have used over the years. Caravans are hatd to beat for pure convenience. Personally I do prefer full height vans though. The one thing I have learned is, thete is no such thing as a perfect rig.
Honestly the distinct lack of cooking in this episode kinda makes me think that your approach to camping with a family needs to be a whole series called "Fire to FAMILY". Could be a good shout, I'd watch it
I like that name!!
Beautiful looking spot for camping with the family. No doubt a good serenity vs vibe ratio. Thanks for the video, we are currently tossing up between getting a hybrid or a camper so thanks for the help and looking forward to the next episode. Love the channel dude.
Nice one Harry! Good family trip.
I have three young kids and you need to find away to make getting away as simple as possible, otherwise it’s too hard and un enjoyable. We brought a 10year single axle expanda, and that’s made a massive difference for us and in our price range. They are only young for a little while 👍🏻
After camping with a poptop for 12 years, just changed to a hybrid. Agree with all your comments. It's a strange feeling being set up in a few minutes. Love the liw weight and size, I've got a Reconn R2
Having only had camper trailers and full caravans, it was very interesting to see your family perspective on hybrids. Looking forward to the next video.
It was a surprise running into you and your family at the MA Baker at Booral on the Bucketts way. Even though it was brief it was nice to meet you.
Hey man, what a family... start them young and they will do it for life. Both of my boys had their 1st birthdays camping on Frazer Island. All of my 4 kids have 4wds and campertrailers and they will use them regularly. You are doing well!!
Great video, however, not all hybrids are the H16. In fact we are currently have a H16 on order as a step up from our current beloved ZoneRV Expedition 12 (which we have just put up for sale). We are at that stage where we will compromise the ability to get really off road (which our expedition 12 gives us) for a larger van with a few more bells and whistles 😁. Super content keep it up
That was hilarious Harry.
Sam, "that's genuinely very nice" she seemed surprised you can cook 😅😅😅
😂😂😂😂
Okay, not even half way through video and you've convinced me that a hybrid van is the go, eventually... Was thinking of upgrading my budget trailer/ RTT camper for a forward fold for "family" camping (me, 6yo boy, 5yo girl, occasionally mum and/ or dog), but will make do for now and save for one of these. Hopefully get one second hand closer to when we set off for our lap (waiting for kids to get a bit older/ long service leave to kick in)
Looking at the H16 vs a Frontier/ Drifter I think for a family the forward folds are the way to go.
I have a drifter myself and are planning to add one grasshopper to the brood and the Drifter will be perfect for a family of 4. The rear bed is plenty of room for one or both kids and the collapsible table gives you another bed.
One day the kids will want to longer sleep in the camper with Mum and Dad and move out to the annexe or their own tent/ swag which will suit us. Still leaves you with a fantastic interior and that spare double bed if you bring a friend or need a little more storage space.
On the flipside IF you got the H16 with the bunks for the kids you lose a lot of that interior space that makes the inside so liveable in a H16. And then once the kids say "eww gross im not sharing a room with my parents" you are left with a kid sized bunk bed taking up half the living space in the H16.
I think the H16 is amazing and would suit either a couple looking for something a bit more luxurious than a camper but not as hefty as a fullsize OR a family with older kids who sleep outside in a tent or swag already. I feel like optioning it with the bunk severely limits its usefulness and lifetime with you and when it starts at 80k you would want thing to last a loooong time.
The big thing is that we never use the inside area of the Frontier for anything except sleeping. We never use the lounge
I love how surprised Samantha sounded about how good the rice was. My wife always sounds surprised that my cooking is good... which it is nearly always good. Bec and I have been looking at hybrids as well, we've got 3 kids and want to do a lap of Aus, but we're not keen on towing a giant van all the way around.
Considering that Sam is generally uncomfortable on your videos I think that possibly the most telling part of this video was how comfortable she appeared in the van. Looking at how she was in the van and comparing that to how she was on the lounge at the end, she seemed about the same and when your "family" are comfortable then they're obviously happy.
As a camper trailer person never getting a caravan, buying a hybrid was the best compromise i ever made.😂
Cracking video Harry. From a single bloke who just had a swag, then a wife and kids upgraded to a camper van and then a van to accommodate us all and fit in amongst a growing family, the best thing is everyone is happy, to be able to camp with the family and keep the wife happy with young kids and everyone enjoys the experience, nothing beats it. So adjust the accommodation to suit the age of the kids and revert back later on. Caravan park camping teaches your kids social skills which will be beyond any other experience available and stand them in good stead for life. Keep up the great work.
Hybrid is a great option for a young family - anything that maintains sanity is key!! 🙃
The one thing that makes my soft floor camper a bit of a downer is waiting for the canvas to dry before packing up.
Nothing beat camping with the family
Great video mate, also top work showing a balance of work/family life.
So glad to see your whole family together this episode. Bubby seems to be doing well. Interesting review of this camper. Loved the way the roof is raised. You didn't comment on the east/west bed layout and your thoughts there.
When my family was your children’s age , we used to tent camp in the VHC often, they would have a bath in a food crate with the water heated with a glind in-line heater . Love the memories you are making…
They say that it's impossible to spoon feed a child without opening your own mouth at the same time.....12:00 is further proof 🤣
😂😂😂😮
@harryfishaman trust me, I'm speaking from my own experience 🤣
Another great video too. Thank you for your content
I grew up camping with my family. Great to see your family out and about. How good is a quick set up!
I’ve been following you for years and I agree it’s all about outdoors and cooking with the fire. BUT then kids happened and it all changed “FAMILY”. I am now looking at a hybrid camper from the toilet / shower / kitchen benefit.
Awesome setup for a ‘family’
@harryfishaman - are you able to provide info for the location that you camped by the river - looked amazing and would love to give it a go.
As someone who has done it all camping & never wanted to tow a van, the only thing we miss is the ability to tie-down stuff on the camper trailer & being able to see behind you. The ease of set up & pack down, being able to pull over nearly anywhere & be able to access everything, even catch 40 winks & the fact it is more secure when you leave camp has been a game changer for us. We have an off-road teardrop (only the two of us now) & don’t plan on getting a bigger van, but if we did it would probably be a hybrid. Every set up has some compromises, whatever works best at the time & just makes life easier, I am all for it.
We ended up getting towing mirrors & they do make a big difference, worth having in my opinion.
Family, Just ordered a H16 from ORE, upgrading from a Mountain Trail after a lifetime of campers and tents, enjoyed your video and even happier about the decision now.
You will love it!!
re caravan parks, likes and dislikes. I am an older guy, single happy to camp "bush" but a caravan park gives me the option of social intercourse (or not) Camp kitchens, bathrooms, recreation rooms are all part of the deal.
Could you jig up a GoPro suction cup mount for your main camera and put it on the camper for filming? Could be alright for a birds eye view. (Probs not a GoPro one for a bigger camera but you get the idea)
What makes this caravan a hybryd and other vans not, hybryd is combination of different things, ie two things combined, nothing in these vans are combined to make one thing, we have a van that uses gas, diesel, solar, and 240 volt, does that constitute a hybryd, in van speak yes, in reality no, nevertheless it looks like a good rig, get out there and enjoy it, we only live once, cheers
We loved the cub 16 but at over 100 grand it's out of our price range 😢 it's an awesome set up
I was anti towed caravan , but once i have a kids currently my mind changed, now i just design my own one and tried to make small and multi purposed camper trailer..
So u use ac in the Van but u draw a line at using a Gas Cooker lol lol just givin ya shit m8,love ya vids as always
Our Stealth Overlander in South Africa is very similar to this but much lighter. Not sure why Aussie vans are so heavy.
Hi Harry
Jez and I made a decision at the begginning of COVID to buy a forward fold camper thinking this would be good for us , wrong it was a mistake pushing 70 years old not the fittest we didn't realise how physicall putting up a camper trailer would be, so we decide a Hybrid was the way to go , so thats what we did , literally push a button and 7 to 10 minutes later its all done never looked back , any chance you can divuldge your camping spot.
Cheers
Jonno and Jez
There is a diagram of requirements for mirrors. If you can see down the side of the van, and an area near the rear corner, that meets requirements.
I can send something through if you like? Need a message.
Crumbs, I honestly thought CUB stood for Carlton United Breweries! 😂
If that cowboytuned bloke would pay a bit of child support you wouldn't have to tow around that glorified tent on wheels
Enjoyed that, especially with it being sunny. Here in the UK we have the European version of the Hybrid Caravan.
Towing mirrors or not maybe that is why you crossed the double lines so much. Sorry but it looks so bad it the first minute of the video.
Family. What a great review, I often wonder if the pop tops are too hot or cold in different temps, look forward to the next video.
Looking for something to take the "Family" round Auz in..
Partner and 8mth baby..
Watched entire vid to see the bathroom LOL, did I just miss it?
Does it have a wet bathroom with chemical toilet or just the shower?
Oh yeah sorry I missed that, yes it has a big wet bathroom with toilet and shower
Just wondering what portacot you were using? Looks like a good compact one 😊
hey mate, you used gas some time ago on one of your vid's because of a total fire ban day, Just saying
Product placement, little disappointed for this channel. To get the first camper made, it must be for a plug. Back to cooking please.
It was actually just a timing thing. My wife had to be in Sydney for a medical conference and I had already been trying to test out a Hybrid with Cub, but when it lined up it just happened that there was only one available and it was the first one. To get the family over for another trip when there was a 2nd one with a bunk available wasn’t practical. But also yes, Cub is a sponsor and I’ve never pretended otherwise. This channel is how I feel my family and keep a roof over our heads, but this was not a paid thing with Cub
Family ive got ur book already and its totally awesome i got it through a not so Secret Santa a few years back so pass my gift on to someone more desurving than me,Happy Days
Glad your making coin, but couldn’t get through this one
Hey Harry, with regard to the power setup and consumption with aircon etc, I’d strongly suggest sussing out a QLD-based company called “Safiery”. I visited their HQ and met the lead dude “Bruce” a while back now, they showed us through a bunch of their setups and what it allows you to do as far as freedom off the grid. Pretty crazy setups (3kw+ charging from a 250a alternator, instant hot water, induction 😂, aircon) as well as heaps of other niceties that you just won’t get out of other 12v based setups.
They use (mostly) 48v setups with a heap of Victron equipment and a bunch of proprietary components too.
Knowing how hard you gush for “good gear” makes me think you’d be pretty blown away with what they have to offer.
It’s not cheap, but it’s really, really good stuff. They’re on TH-cam/Instagram etc too.
Worth checking it out, it’s chalk and cheese compared to consumer grade stuff like redarc/enerdrive/etc.
Cheers!
Enjoyed this, thanks Harry. We’re still Brumby ppl I think, Kayaks on top and off road capability, kids in sleeping bags on the hard floor.
Have been curious about the H16, stoked to have you road test for all of us.
Still thinking the Frontier would be our step up, especially if future models have the kitchen all connected like the H16.
“Family” camping, woot!
Hi Guys, if you want to save power when running the aircon the industry standards are 23C for summer and 19C for winter. For every degree that you move in the wrong direction you increase your power consumption by 10%. I'm looking forward to next weeks clip.. 👍🍺
Great video. We have just put an order in on a hybrid as an upgrade from our forward fold. Our "family" is two fur kids. We are heading to Adelaide from Perth shortly with a swag, a German Shepard and a husky cross to pick it up. Coming back in comfort. I'm looking forward to both legs.
A great infomercial but At $ 98,000 this is out of the reach of most Australians who just want to camp minimalist style. But at that price I’d still like to have an indoor kitchen and maybe ensuite. Good luck cooking outside in bad rainy, windy weather or when pesky flies and mosquitoes insects and wildlife are about.
Now what happens when the weather goes to shit? That's the downside to hybrids.
We had a Cub Drover for a couple of years we had an amazing time in that up the Cape , Bungles Gibb Road lots of outback WA and all over outback Australia in general that’s why we bought it, we have now gone into a full size caravan with the washing machines, air conditioning a big fridge don’t get me wrong, but it’s definitely not the camping experience we have had…we can’t take our van into our favourite Fitzroy River campsite with the big salty gliding past us and having a big Jabiru walking thru our campsite.
Hubby and I have all grown kids, with grandkids now. We have a hybrid and love it, truly! Like you said, your own cabin. We also have the option of putting a bunk bed above the dinette in grandkids come. Our is a 4wd twin axle and Hubby is a truck driver and loves how easy towing it is. PS, thanks for the tuna recipe 😊
Welcome to the fold brother 😂😂 I only wished we got into one at your age, apparently I’m a slow learner, but I’m onto it now 👍👍. At this price point you are spoilt for choice. Let the good times roll 👁️👁️😎😇🐕🦺❤️🙏🇦🇺
Next time you are at Newie, you can get CBCo's at First Choice liquor (Glendale, not sure where else). You might also find them at at Dan Murphy's which are scattered all around newie but I haven't found it at my nearest one. First Choice had all the flavours
Nice video!! Our family of 5 spent 5 months in a Goldstream Storm this year. That had its limitations particularly weather and each extreme temp. This option looked incredible. Bring from Newcastle are see a few more Cubs around but I reckon they are still few and far between because of their price, albeit they are Aussie made.
Anyways. Keen for the next one.
Code word....family
We sold our camper trailer and picked up our Lifestyle Reconn 2 Hybrid after a 2plus year wait. But it's a game changer. 2mins 30sec and we're setup. Oh and our Reconn is only 2.1mtra high so pretty much the same height as a landcruiser. Can't go back now.
I remember your first camping trip with Billy and it went downhill very quickly (I think he got a really high temperature…). I admired at the time how honest your video was (not just showing the Instagramable photos. Nice to hear your thoughts on the hybrid camper.
Family.
Hi Harry, We bought a Stoney creek scout 11. We really like it, it’s easy to tow and narrow so don’t have towing mirrors and it gets down narrow tracks.
It’s tiny but we squeeze 4 of us and a dog under one of the kids beds and it’s way better than our old camper.
We are actually up at Coffs currently in the flogging down rain and we are perfectly dry watching your show.
Well done, going thru the same dilemma with having a camper trailer & been looking at Hybrids although we are empty nesters..
Also where was the spot where you are set up with your camper trailer at 26.10 min mark.
Looks amazing
Looks like a great camper, unfortunately at over $70k it''s out of my price range. I doubt you'll be dissapointed based on the brand's history. Thanks for the content. Cheers
great to see the family mate.
fwiw, I think the Cub is a bit under cooked, but then again, I'm comparing to the much more expensive Kimberley vans. I'm also living full time in mine.
While I think it’s a great option with all the thing I need, there is no way I could ever get access to $80,000 to spend on it to own
@harryfishaman thanks for this vid I've been looking at hybrid van for a auslap and I think I'm sold now... code word FAMILY would love a cook book mate
Have a look at the Ezi-Trail hybrid. I bought one after spending a year researching Hybrids and found them better and cheaper than the CUB's.
Great review guys it’s all about “ family”
Try a set of MSA towing mirrors, I have them on my DMax and they are not ridiculously big Iike truck mirrors. Make a family getaway just a little safer.
FAMILY
Always enjoy your videos and real world reviews. I still love taking the kids out in the swags, but id get one if i had the money. Keep up the quality content 🍻
That’s the evolution of camping!
Single bloke yeah a swag plus esky is fine.
Then the family comes along and boom caravan!
I did exactly the same thing, sometimes I miss the swag but in inclement weather I loooooove my caravan
Watched this (first time on this channel) after reinforcement at the recent Caravan Show on how suitable the C16 would be for us to own and finished up cooking two of the three pizzas from a previous video - they were delicious.
Hi Harry and FAMILY, totally agree with your run down of the Hybrid. Never having towed before we bought a 13" Hybrid van and have been travelling everywhere (in the first year we visited 57 campsites). Just wanted to mention that while you physically don't need towing mirrors to tow because you have good line of sight, legally you have to have tow mirrors. Crazy right, but if you have the option perhaps you could clarify that some states require towing mirrors regardless of sight. I ask this because getting a fine for not having mirrors is just like throwing away money and could wreck a persons holiday. Cheers Sharyn
Interesting about the mirrors. Is that a van thing? I’ve never used towing mirrors with my camper
@@firetofork I'm certainly not an expert but our Hybrid is the width of our Prado so we thought we didn't need them. In the pick up notes for the company it included "have you got your towing mirrors". When we asked ACT roads they said it was illegal to tow our van without mirrors. Not sure if it's a height thing and maybe that's why you don't need them with your camper. Also talked to a guy who installed pull out mirrors on his Prado and said he'd never use them. After getting a warning from police in NSW he now uses them. That's basically my foundation for sending you the comment. Happy to be wrong but I would rather use them than get a fine. Cheers
Just had a look and it looks like I would need them for my Prado. You need them if the trailer is wider than the tow vehicle. Prado is 1885mm and the van is 2.2m. I technically need them for the camper because it’s 1900 but I doubt I’d get in trouble over 15mm!
Exactly what I found out this morning after commenting. The only place you'd probably get pulled over is QLD at the moment. I hear they are pulling everyone over and doings weight checks and the whole lot. Thanks for the great videos. Cheers Sharyn@@firetofork
Im loving all your videos mate so happy I've finally got someone who I can enjoy watching their life what a beauty. As once what Vin diesel said... Family
Some of those comments in the end really hit home and has made some of our decisions for when we take delivery of ours early next year, especially the one about the fridge, even though we'll be going the other way, and the portable induction cooker. As we've deleted the inside hob and sink, that's going to be a good place to place it, if needed.
Brilliant video!
Try an opus 4 camper. Half the price. Press a button it inflates. Annex is fully inclosed. Loads more head room. We love ours.
Great to see you over on this side of the country and welcome to Newy. Had I known, I could have dropped you off some CBCo IPAs :)
Yep, changing circumstances necessitate change, and adding a #2 to the tribe does just that - cars, campers, houses and so on It's hard to go back to packing away wet canvas and stuffy shower tents and the lady of your life tends to enjoy the creature comforts (and while we secretly do love it too when it's so easy to set up, just don't admit it openly!).
Code Word?...did I miss something? great video and the H16 looks fantastic
Nobody likes towing mirrors.
But you can't see far enough behind u without them, and that makes them a legal requirement, at least in QLD.
"FAMILY" makes life better, i thi k its a great van.Hang your camera of the side of van, there are suction clamps
FAMILY
Love that you do this and show us all its easy. Just sold a tourer with a roof top tent and now have a fam car and a trailer. Showing my wife this vid and she us know frothing to get a tent again and take our 2 year old and soon to be newborn! Winning.
That was neat and there are so many options when it comes to camper, hybrid etc. I could have sworn, we saw glimpses of the other van in the video, guess will have to wait to next week to see full vid and not just views from above lol😅
Sounds great! We had a Cub camper, can’t remember the model, however it was great. Now we’ve evolved over many, six I think campers and caravans, to a motorhome.
Love the set up! Pull up, put fridge onto gas, turn seats around!
Set up, get a beer!
If you you lucky enough to keep doing this show for another 10-15 years , it will be interesting to watch the boys grow up and be involved in the production.
Really enjoyed the video with your family. Great moments the kids will remember forever. Great to see the cub review. Enjoy the east coast, catch you round one day.
Mate. I’d give anything to be able to spend time away with my family in a beautiful place like that. Drone footage was on spec. Thanks mate.
How did you rate the BT50 as a tow rig? They are on my list of candidates to replace our rubbish Pajero Sport.
it towed well, it just needs something in the tray
Im currently doing 6 months (4 months in) in an L16 and can tell ypu when its 45 degrees having an insulated shell and air conditioning is amazing
Hey Harry, with a young family comfort is important. It's also good for the wife especially with a little one. But the price tag is a hard think.
Thank you and your family for this great review.
Ps.
Great to see a good bloke with his family.
Well done.
Very enjoyable video. Whether Hybrid or caravan having a easy setup and some home comforts like shower etc makes camping comfy and easier for parents and kids.
Awesome ep mate, thoroughly enjoyed it . We've done the same thing, started with swags did the tent thing, campers and with two boys the pop up van it makes camping/glamping a lot easier with a young "family"
Nice to see a video with your family. Just bought myself a hybrid, waiting for delivery, different make though.
Thanks for sharing your family trip. We have a small hybrid camper which we take off road. I look forward to seeing your next video.
