While film school has taught me a lot of things, its also restricted my creativity over the years. Curriculums of any kind have a tendency of teaching you the "right" way to do something. In my case, that might be the right way to set up a shot, write out a scene, to capture interviews for a documentary.
I've found myself in a creative rut recently, unable to even fathom making something that didn't align with the standards I'm being taught in film school. If I'm not able to shoot something brand new with good film gear and a story I know off the bat is going to have great results, I won't want to do it.
But there are so many stories out there that can only be told in other ways. Stories from the past, internal struggles that lack a physical representation, or people who are too far away for me to afford to get to. But these things shouldn't keep anybody for telling a story they think needs to be heard.
I've been making some found footage documentaries lately, as well as broadening my horizons in the kinds of footage I want to use and how I construct my scenes. And it's allowing me to tell stories in a whole new way. I thought I'd share a bit of that journey with you. Hope you enjoy!
