    If you want to do an epoxy floor in your garage, you NEED to do this if you want it to turn out well and last. I'm talking about concrete prep. A lot of times, companies or DIYers will acid wash to save time, but if you want to do it right, you're gonna want to diamond grind. So, that's what we're doing today! I learned a lot about what works and what doesn't, what's easy and what will just make your life harder. So let's get into it and start The Ultimate Dream Garage Build Series!

    Just did this a couple months ago, my first house and epoxied garage. I used Hellfire Concrete Coating which isn't an epoxy but the same prep work. Definitely agree and recommend renting the Diamabrush maintainer. A couple things that I learned though. 1. Even though you're doing a wet grind, I would highly recommend anyone to wea a silica respirator as silica dust is no joke to you lungs. 2. I found that filling the cracks (if you choose to do so), angle grinding, and then the floor maintainer yielded the best results. The maintainer smooths out the angle grinders 'kiss' marks. 3. Give the garage plenty of time to dry out which is a little hard since we've gotten so much rain in TX this past week. Just because its dry on top doesn't mean all that water you've injected with the power wash is gone. 4. The day you're putting down the primer, run your shop vac over the entire floor and/or broom sweep several times to get all the remaining bugs/dust/crap off the floor. 5. Have help when you're putting the epoxy down and make sure you have extra of whatever you need (brushes, rollers, etc). Since its time based, you may not have time to stop and make a trip to the store, especially with the COVID stuff, if you screw up. 6. Full flake is the only way to lessen the effects of UV on epoxy, at some point it will yellow and it doesn't matter what product you use. The quality of product and amount of UV determines how long it will take to yellow. My next garage, I'll be porcelain tiling as it takes just about the same amount of work, around the same price depending on what PEI rate you go with (recommend at least 4), and is the most durable of coatings. Added bonus is you have unlimited amount of time to do the work and can do it in sections, unlike epoxy. Downside is its a higher learning curve of work.

      With preping if the home is a new build do you recommand grinding the floor?

    • @YouTubeUserToo
      @YouTubeUserToo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You read my mind - I’m skipping the epoxy and going straight for the porcelain tile.

    • @mechanicalcanvas
      @mechanicalcanvas 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shaunmurray7677 Very late on the responding here. You likely do not need to grind and could get away with just acid etching but you will need to wait a certain duration before you can epoxy new concrete. I believe many recommend waiting at least 2 months or more. It would be recommended to perform moisture tests prior to ensure the slab has had enough time to cure.

      @@mechanicalcanvas A mechanical grind is almost always required per manufacturer's tds. Only low quality products would allow acid etching as proper preparation.

    Removing paint and prepping interior concrete floors for stain and polish. Had the same problem with the dust shroud bristles being too long and ended up cutting them. And I thought about doing it all using the angle grinder, too, but it kills your back. Will be renting the floor maintainer and Diamonbrush next weekend. Thanks for the video.

    Hi everyone. Concrete coatings professional here. Not trying to critique my guys process here however, just want to make everyone aware:
    1- concrete dust is incredibly super fine. Shop vacs do not have appropriate HEPA filters, yes that’s right you need multiple, to help make sure your air stays clean. Why do you need it to stay clean you ask? Because that super fine dust creates silica which if inhaled can cause MAJOR respiratory problems. So, just keep that in mind when you get the urge to do things like this yourself. :)
    2- That Home Depot Diama brush unfortunately is garbage. Simply because there’s not enough weight behind the machine.
    3-“ floor maintainers” as he described it, are not designed for this kind of work. They’re made for cleaning, not grinding.
    A professional with the right tools would be able to get this garage done in less than a day with even better results. That includes prep, and coating installation.
    Be safe out there and remember, cheap labor isn’t skilledC and skilled labor isn’t cheap :)

      I'd question any so-called pro that puts down an epoxy floor including grinding/cleaning, in half a day, as it requires a lot of down time for drying from the cleaning, between putting down layers or primer, epoxy, sealer, etc.
      This is why a lot of times I choose to not use a so-called pro even if money isn't the issue, because they will cut every corner they can to get the job done faster to do more jobs. 2 years later when the epoxy starts coming up, good luck getting ahold of them, let alone forcing them to fix their shoddy work.
      With the right knowledge and tools, this kind of job does not need a so-called pro.

  • @ericmacintosh2716
    @ericmacintosh2716 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Added bonus of wet grinding is a lot less dust everywhere too. Don't let the days get too hot before you epoxy, and fill as many cracks and holes as you can before hand. What will you be using for anti-skid since you weren't a fan of the chips?

    Did you use the Coating Removal disc from Home Depot or just the Concrete Prep disc? Their website description is unclear which works with the floor maintainer (presumably both).
    I'll be doing my second garage epoxy floor next week. The first one I did was on a new build home and the floor was ready to go - pretty easy with very little prep required. The one I'm doing next week is older with remnants of an old pre-existing epoxy floor that's flaking up everywhere. I think the coating removal tool is good enough and I'll etch separately with citric acid but the concrete prep disc says it etches. Thoughts?

    • @thomashajicek2747
      @thomashajicek2747 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thought acid etching is what people would do when they didn't want to grind. The grinding removes any paint/sealer/etc and gives the surface the rough texture needed for the epoxy to adhere to. I've heard too many stories that etching simply doesn't do enough to create a surface for a good bond and epoxy ends up flaking away after just a couple of years.

      Really want to go that route, but they have their own issue: water getting under causing mold/mildew, popping up, especially when you have aa car on them and turn the wheels, costly for what they are compared with the cost of DIY epoxy.

    Maybe lose the "How to" from the title? or the DIY ? both together doesn't seem right.

    How to do the minimum work with the minimum equipment and still expect a professional job, and then tell everyone to do it the same way you did

    Lasted 2 minutes...does anyone make a simple go-to guide versus some guy staring into clthe camera talking crap not relevant to the DIY? Cripes.

    After all that I think maybe just hire a pro? Nice job though. Seems like quite a bit of time- 3 days just getting ready

    the reason why i only chemically etch concrete, and only grind when it is uneven

    • @thomashajicek2747
      @thomashajicek2747 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heard way too many stories about how etching doesn't really create an ideal surface for the primer/epoxy to bond and it ends up flaking away after 2/3 years.
      I guess if you're doing it professionally and don't care how it looks 2 years later than etching is fine.

    do not listen to this guy, epoxy goes on bare cut concrete do not use a primer!

    Hyper-speeding thru the actual only part of the video of value makes no sense. We can't learn any technique from this.

    • @thomashajicek2747
      @thomashajicek2747 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's no real technique, just go slowly over the surface until you have a clean surface with even texture needed for the primer to properly adhere.

    Sorry but this is Too long and it’s only part one. Maybe just do a separate “steps” video under 4 minutes on the side…for people who know their tools but just want a quick layout of the job
