Bioactive Ghost Mantis Vivarium w/ Realistic DIY Background (pt2)

  • It's finally time to get my Ghost Mantis into a proper bioactive vivarium. You've seen me make vivariums before, but this one is a little different. I decided to make a realistic background using Drylok Masonry Paint.
    I know that some hobbyists use it to seal plywood enclosures, but I never would've thought to use it on a background. I found it very easy to use and will definitely mix it in with some of the other techniques I've show before. Let me know what you think of the finished piece. I personally really like how it turned out.
    Although I've never seen him use it like this, I originally got the idea to use this paint from Troy Goldberg. He uses it to make backgrounds for poison dart frogs on his channel. Check it out!

    If you missed the first installment of this series on the tank build, then check out the video below. It was pretty easy to build.

    The new mantis vivarium is setup and ready to go! I'm really excited to start bringing insects into the lineup and will most likely get more in the future. What else would you want to see a setup for? Also, let me know what thought of the new background? I found it to be a great and easy alternative to other methods I've shown in the past. Have a great weekend SerpaSquad!

    I had a ghost mantis a few years ago. She was my first pet bug. I got her as an L2 or 3. Itty bitty, but she did amazingly, she was a bright red baby(I named her Clyde after the red ghost in pacman) and turned a deep almost black auburn color. She was insanely curious and great about handling when I had to. She would move to the front of her enclosure and watch me work when I came to my desk. She was a great friend in such an unexpected way- I didn't expect her to be so observant of her environment. After her I tried to keep a few more mantids, but had issues with all of them for one reason or another. I was unfortunately very attached to them(never expected to be sobbing over losing a pet insect but the day I saw Clyde going I sat with her in my hands and cried), and even though this seems common in the bug keeping hobby(losing pets who had seemingly been in perfect health), I felt to blame. I eventually stopped trying after losing a Devils Flower Mantis to a bad shed where she had fallen in the middle of molting. It's been a few years but seeing this makes me want to try again.
    I hope you got the most out of your time with your little guy. He's very pretty. :)

    • @_soulcraft_
      @_soulcraft_ ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have basically the same story. Raised ghosts successfully. Eventually tried devils flower and they had the same issues with molting. I actually found mine on the ground and successfully assisted it in completing its molts nearly 3 times... but all 3 of mine died when my idiot housemate was tasked with feeding them while I was out of town. They poured the ENTIRE hatchery of feeder bugs into the enclosure and the mantids were literally stressed to death.

    You truly are an artist, you made that foam look amazing! I recently started my crested gecko build this week and I used some of your techniques from your crestie video to make it look good. I do have a question- did you go to any classes or school that taught you how to work with wood so well, or did you learn on your own? I'm going to take woodworking next year but I feel like that isn't going to be nearly enough to help me get to your skill level. I hope you had a good Christmas Tanner!

    • @BeetleBuns
      @BeetleBuns 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if anyone else is wondering, ficus (and many other plants) cuttings can be rooted pretty easily just by cutting at a leaf node, putting that leaf node into the dirt, and keeping the leaves moist. You can keep it from drying out as fast by only keeping 2 or 3 leaves on the stem, as the leaves are the main way the plant loses water. Keep the soil moist but never wet, or it'll rot. It takes a bit of looking after, but other than the time put in it's pretty easy and rewarding.

    Hey Tanner , i live in east Texas , and every year around May/ June my house is invaded by striped bark scorpions.
    while it hurts like a wasp sting , they are not truly dangerous to humans . generally i just catch them and walk out into the woods on our property and release them .
    but they are cool creatures and glow under a black light .
    so i'll cut to the chase.
    if , you'd like to have one , next spring i will catch and ship you one. i won't go out and hunt one up , i'll just wait till my wife discovers another one in the sink or whatever and catch him.

    I had some experience with begonia rex... mine died after a month and do any of you know how to take care of them?

    • @TehSlan
      @TehSlan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my experience they need constantly moist soil, decent airflow, and a very specific light amount. Moist soil makes them prone to root rots. Most root rots are edible to springtails, so it's not really an issue in bioactive builds. Airflow in this build is high thanks to the fan setup but as long as they're not crowded I've not had issues with them. Finally, for light, they'll tend to grow to a height they're comfortable with. Burning them with too much light is easier than overshading them, since they can grow upwards towards the light but not down away from it, but if you do find them growing long stems with few leaves, they're probably not getting enough light.

    This was the perfect build inspiration for me. Not too big not too small, showy yet quaint just like i was looking for.

    Looks awesome. yeah the short life expectancy is what keeps me from getting one. I get too attached and sad.

    Building all those textured features reminds me of building table-top game terrain. It'd be cool to have a vivarium/paludarium build with a scene from something like D&D or Warhammer. A jungle scene, or overgrown ruin would be cool but the possibilities are endless.
    Also, a kinocorium would be cool. Bonus points for bioluminescent fungi.
    Happy holidays! :D

    Awesome background Tanner! I love watching your videos and learning through each one a new way to scape or build enclosures. I know it would be kind of a big project, but I would love to see another snake enclosure build. I love your work and I saw the care and effort you put into Houdini’s build, and I wonder how you would do one for like a Brazilian rainbow boa. I loved this video and Merry Christmas!
