Hey ralph that's a really cool tool that black and decker valve seat cutting tool, old and built to last, man it drives me up the wall trying to lap valves in and the sucker comes off after about 3 twists .But you are making progress, and saving a old engine from the scrap heap .
Have a 71/2hp. jug, that needs total machine work yet, Will be doing a full clean up, 10 over bore, new hardened seats, and clean up head bolt holes, and carb studs, etc. Have had more than one Gravely people in the know assure me that this will be a direct fit ! Have you done anything similar with your Gravely recovery projects !?
Theirs a spring that is supposed to go around the pilot shaft and it keeps the stone lifted up some and when you put down pressure on the stone it cuts and also he should have put a little oil on the pilot shaft so as not to cause chatter . and then cut the next seat with a 60 degree stone to bring the lap mark near the center of the face of the valve so it can be lapped for a finish touch. Also I would have decked the top of the cylinder to get rid of the rough surface and give the head gasket a chance to seal properly and re do the head surface too for a good job. Nice you tube session
Wider angle at top and steeper angle below the 45 degree seat and make the seat as close to the middle if the valve angle as you can for long life. This would be a 3 angle seat grind which is the best their is and only needs to be about a 3/32 seat width max the valve face is where you want the seat to hit about as close to the middle as you can , Have fun and your tube is very educational especially those older engines .
ive never seen a valve grinder like that black and decker. Im on the hunt to find one for myself now. Do any of those type of grinder work for old V8 engines? thanks
Thanks for the video -Off topic here but I acquired couple old Model L's been sitting for 20yrs- One has bush hog / 30" mower that all oil leaked out as evident on underside - How difficult is it to put seal in the gear box? Thanks
You know you can reverse that block use exhaust for intake,, when the timing is advanced they run hot on the exhaust side, by turning it around every 2-3 years you can extend the block life
hi, i also have a gravely tractor model L, and i want to do an exhaust valve job but i want to do this without taking the cylinder off. can i get your emailadress to sent you some pictures and ask some questions.
Hi, I doubt it is possible. For one you need to get the valve retainers off to pull the valves out. I don't see how you could do that with the cylinder on the machine. Also you would not want to rick getting any valve lapping compound in the block etc.

I wonder if a new valve seat could have been put in if they may come for that❤❤❤

This is my first time using the tool. Would you make the 60 degree area on the top of the valve seat ? Thanks for the pointers.....

little tip if you put a rubber hose on the valve steam that fits snugly and twist and lap holding that

Hi this would work. They are out there also made by other companies as well
Nice job

I figured since the intake valve was always larger you couldn't reverse the cylinder.Have you done that before ?
