    It's too bad they can't have official translators at these events, it's sweet to see Armine translating for Geyla and how Geyla translated for Maria but they shouldn't be put in that position.

      I agree. Elite athletes often take motivation and pride from their country and culture that helps them compete. They deserve that resource if they are going to be asked to give answers in English. That cracked me up though when she translated the English back on accident. 😂

    They should have hired an interpreter. It's not fair to the gymnasts who don't speak English as their native language. Angelina can speak english, however speaking a foreign language to an entire room of journalists is very nerve wracking and a lot of pressure! She would have been very tired too. Some of the athletes don't speak english at all so they definitely need interpreters. It's kind of rude to ignore the fact that most gymnasts are not from english speaking countries.

    • @fredrika27
      @fredrika27 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, English is now the language of gymnastics despite it being international sport in which French was once dominant. What I find interesting is that the gymnasts from western European countries like Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium speak English well, but otbers don't. What it comes down to is a country's willingness to teach languages that are vital to its interests! It's sad to say that Russian, China, Brits, French and Americans are language lazy and feel they don't have to learn other languages while the rest of the world speaks at least two to three languages! Then there is the poor schooling of some of these gymnasts who often don't get the education they deserve after sacrificing themselves! Some can't attend college because they are not academically fit!

    As a long time gymnastics fan, I’ve seen Armine so many times over the years at competitions but I’ve never heard her speak. It’s a shame she had to be put in the position as translator. Angelina is the frickin’ world champion she should have a proper translator. Also for people wondering why Angelina didn’t speak in English. When most people learn a second language they can understand it more than they can speak it. I’m similar with Spanish. In addition the thought of speaking it makes me terrified sometimes so she is prob the same especially since this is a public press conference.

    Isn't it frustrating for the winners to know they propably/maybe only won because their hardest competitors were not present? I can't really take this year's worlds seriously with so many big names missing. I guess they are saturated when TV shows and stuff are more important than competing for a world champion title. I by no means criticize gymnasts that cannot participate due to physical and/or mental problems. However, if an athlete doesn't compete in this year's worlds because the Olympics were too stressful, I wonder how Melnikova, Murakami, Andrade and the likes managed to participate in both events. Was their training schedule better? Are they more ambitious? Stronger willed? If the latter is the case, I guess they fully deserve their newly won titles.
