I'm from Toronto originally, and been to many Massey Hall shows. Great sounding venue. They did a really nice restoration recently, took a couple years to get it back to it's glory.
Ken great interview of Nick - can’t wait to pick up Hothouse. Craft is kicking ass right now - the new OJCs rival the Tone Poets and they have so much available to reissue. Tsubo is on my list as well.
Nick mentioned that in the video. Probably some kind of weird copyright issue with the fact that Parker was then recording for a different label. Either way, this is an amazing complete re-issue. That totally blew my mind.
…. always a pleasure to hear NP talk about his projects. I love that Hot House release (being in my top 10 Jazz reissues of the year) and mostly all of Craft‘s Jazz reissues for the music and the quality they provide it on vinyl. Great interview, Ken! Many thanks!
Great content lately, Ken! I pulled the trigger on the Hot House vinyl set after watching this. It truly is fantastic sounding. I haven’t heard the CDs but the vinyl is much better than what is available via streaming. Much better.
Interesting interview, Ken. I have both those albums: the original UK (blue label mono) of 'Full House' and a Japanese (1976 Victor) reissue of 'Jazz at the Massey Hall'. Mysteriously, Parker is credited as 'Charlie Chan' on the sleeve. I bought the record in Kyoto while on holiday and didn't immediately make the connection with Charlie Parker. 🤔I have yet to play the latter but the Montgomery album sounds pretty amazing.
… torn between the original live recording and the overdubbed version. Leaving Roach aside, the original is a „Gillespie and Parker without Mingus“ one and the overdubbed is a „Mingus dominated“ one. Glad to have both :-) The Powell Trio recording sounds awful in my ears but musically it is a fine time piece.
My dear friend ken, those vinyls of Craft Recordings are easy items to Christmas time. Do you know the new of Sam Records? "Sahib Shihab and the Danish Jazz Radio Group": marvellous, Ken. Best regards from Spain. 😎
