Hey guys, thanks for all the great advice! I had the same thing happen to my brassicas that Greg did. I put a fence around my garden and replanted my seed trays. My transplants aren't ready but the plants the rabbits got to have started to come back. They are putting on leaves and starting to grow. My question is, am I better off just pulling them up and putting in the transplants or will the original plants continue to grow and put on veggies? I love your show.

We had 2 inches of rain where i live in North Central Florida. Max wind was 25 I believe. It blew about half my stalks part way down. I'm hoping for the best.
What can I use on my cabbages to keep them free of insects? We live in Savannah, Georgia. Our garden is located in our backyard which is an East-facing orientation. Most of our plants have a slight lean as if they are reaching for the sunlight. We have huge oak trees across the path behind our backyard, so we cannot control how much sun exposure our garden gets. This is first year gardening! We have had many heartbreaking failures due to insects/pests. Thank you for the recommendations on pest control products! Are they organic?
i am north east Texas, I have really enjoyed your shows !!!! I have a couple of question. 1. I have noticed you do not mulch your gardens. what is your reasoning not to mulch, 2. i am going to start most of my veggies by seed this year, how soon do you need to start your seeds to have the transplants ready.
I live in North Texas. If you mulch, just be on standby with the Sluggo Plus. I tried mulching and I became over run with snails. My garden looked like I was growing green lace.
We don't mulch because we're constantly turning over crops and planting new ones, which often have a different row spacing than the previous crop. So mulch would be quite the impedance to replanting each time. Also, we like to do quite a bit of cover cropping, which can be tough to do in mulch.
@@gardeningwithhoss thank you so much I appreciate it I placed a order last night for about 90.00 worth of seeds can't wait till I can start a garden. 🤗🤗🤗
Travis if you will start spraying your peas when you see the first bloom and spray every week and after each rain. Also spray a 4 foot border in the grass around your garden. You will have clean peas.
We did that just a couple years ago where our "dream garden" currently sits. Our soils were quite poor initially. But cover cropping and adding lots of compost has made it much better. There's not going to be a quick fix, but it will get better year after year. Make sure you do a soil test so you can get your pH right.
I also have rabbit problems. Where I'm at central CA you can't shoot after dark and we are next to a 4 lane very busy road. I've tried animal repellant, but not seeing much if any results.
Some of my corn blows over maybe every other year. It’s a small patch, so I stake up the blown over stalks with bamboo stakes. Tedious but the corn will mature. For critters we have 7 1/2 ft fencing and add electric for raccoons. Nothing else works. The mid Atlantic deer herd lives in my yard.
Show Ideas: Soil testing- kits, places to send off to, how to collect sample, how to correct issues once you get results. Harvesting- what time of day to harvest, how to tell when different things are ready to harvest, when to pull the plant vs let it produce more. Frost- protecting plants from late surprise frost, growing in low tunnels.
Guys thanks for the great advice and info . I have a problem , I don't know if you can help me with . I've had whole plants pulled out , nothing left and no tracks , maybe a deer or a person messing with me . Young squash and collard plants .
Thanks fellas. As I suspected it's the neem oil damaging my corn leaves. Watched a dozen vids on it and none said anything about not using in hot weather. I'll never use it on corn again under any circumstances.

I'm new to Hoss Tool, you guys have help me, with my question, today. Are you 2 brothers? I do have question about grasshoppers, how do I get rid of them ? New customer here. Thank you
😂 We are father and son. 20 years and 20 days apart. Grasshoppers, like any insect, are going to be tough to eliminate in the adult stage. Start spraying a rotation of spinosad and pyrethrin (both organic) when plants are small. Focus on killing the nymphs to break the reproductive cycles.
If the cutworm larvae is in the soil should I spray the plant only or treat the soil? Which combination for cut worms? The garden insect control with BT or Sluggo plus? I sprayed BT and made a mix for soil and it did nothing 😢Thank you
Each product has its own mixing ratio. Most of the ratios are 1-2 ounces per gallon of water. The mixing rate is on the product label and on the product pages on our site.
Do you have any idea of how to deal with hammerhead worms ? I am infested for now I spray with vinegar I have boards around the garden and i find them under the boards Thank you

You have to start early, almost right after transplanting. Once you get a ton of adults on the plants, there's not much you can do. We use a rotation of spinosad and pyrethrin, both organic, and start spraying early and at least once a week.
I have installed alot of drip tape and have had some of the emitters not putting out water. Is there a tip or trick to share on how to get them going without putting splices on the run of drip tape?
That would be neat if we could do that. However, we prepack those 5 packs in our warehouse for fast processing and shipping. If we had to customize each one, it would slow down our warehouse tremendously and our ability to ship orders fast would likely suffer.
Question or topic for you. Mushroom compost? Is it all it's cracked up to be? Pros and Cons. Alternative composts and their correct and general applications. No till and soil amendment becoming a priority as more and more first-timers are attempting veggie growing suicide...lol..love you guys!
Great show guys as always. I have the perfect solution for rabbits - a Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Bayou, that loves to eat the baby ones and even the bigger ones.
Are you in the Southern Hemisphere? Tomatoes are self-pollinating with perfect flowers, so accidental cross pollination is pretty rare unless you have a ton of very active pollinating insects and many plants in very close proximity flowering at the same time. Most gardeners can grow multiple varieties of tomato and save seed without a problem. If you aren’t saving seed, then it doesn’t matter at all if there is cross pollination. Cross pollinating diff tomato varieties usually has to be intentional and involves emasculating flowers and moving pollen from other flowers with forceps.
If you just want to grow tomatoes to eat, there’s no need to worry about cross pollination. Its only a concern if you want to save pure seed for planting. Either way, tomato cross doesn’t readily occur in most garden settings
Tomatoes are self-pollinating, so they shouldn't cross pollinate. Even if they did, you would only notice it in the second generation if you saved the seeds.
Have a question or two, has planted just a few of the Kentucy blue pole bean and the jade bush bean amount a month ago, while they did germinate the are still only 4-5” tall and not very vibrant in color, plus have a lot of brown spots.i have used the 202020 every week or so and have them on a drip ( not tape) and have sprayed neem oil every week or so.its still in the mid 80’s here in sw Fl.what am I missing here? Also tried starting Bella Rosa tomatoes in trays with seed starting mix, only 1-2 in 10 germinated and they were very wiry and then stand straight up.i did not let soil dry out ,although seems to hold moisture for a long time. Have tried it indoors and outside under covered patio..any help would be appreciated...thanks again
Sounds like the beans may have rust. That happens to use sometimes if we plant them too early in the fall. Sorry to hear that on the Bella Rosa Tomatoes. Most folks are getting 100% germination on those. Send us an email to custserv@hosstools.com if you'd like to try again.
Thats funny, I keep a headlamp and scatter gun at the back door too. The stray cats keep the small varmints to a minimum. I've got to replace the batteries in the headlamp before I run out of stray cats though. Cant hardly see what I'm killin 😂
I hate garden pests , I had a couple rows of green beans and they were starting to get blossoms on them, went out to the garden one morning and there was nothing left but stems sticking out of the ground, the culprit was a ground hog.
Had some make it a month or two. They'd probably store longer if harvested in late summer or early fall. Ours were harvested in the middle of our hot months.
I got A few questions for you Hi guys i am from the augusta ga area. Do you need a Water Hose Filter for your Garden to filter the chlorine have you used one. Should i start stocking up on seeds due to the pandemic that might be here this coming year we have no idea what the government or people is going to do. Do you think there will be a widespread a seed shortage? I see alot of seed stores are out of seeds but you guys do have seeds in stock. What are The Best Conditions for Storing Seeds and containers for Long-term Storage? Thank you
1) You probably don't want to use chlorinated water on your garden. So you might want to filter that if your water is chlorinated. 2) There might be a few varieties that aren't available, but we don't foresee a seed shortage. Most of the issues with companies has been that they can't keep seeds packed, not necessarily the seeds themselves. 3) Just put the seeds in a ziploc bag and store in the fridge.
We haven't ever grafted tomato plants. Seems like most of the people doing tomato grafting are doing it for greenhouse tomatoes. Since we don't grow tomatoes in our high-tunnel, I guess we've never had the need for grafting.
Hi Travis, the Savoy King Cabbage, Collards, and Kale seeds all produced wonderful veggies. Our 1st harvest of Collards were fabulous, a real taste of home, thankyou! The kale was excellent, and the cabbage is a new favorite for fall plantings for our garden (zone 7a). Looking forward to ordering my irrigation kits.
@@gardeningwithhoss but what’s good for thick walls for container gardening? I’ve tried eating them even as they start to turn red thinking... okay finally rip, but the taste is definitely not rip, bitter!

Hold the phone on seed talk! What about seedless watermelon? Are you all gonna do them ? I remember trav talking about a pollinator plant and female plants but have you figured out anything about seeds for them?
Rabbits. That's the best reason for putting a "fish in the hole". Not under a plant but around the edge of the garden. It will bring in foxes. They will take care of the rabbits.
Good video. These are caterpillars. Caterpillars suck. Bt is very effective for killing caterpillars. I can’t afford Bt, so I rely on trying to attract paper wasps, assassin bugs, yellow jackets, and other predators to control the caterpillars. Happy gardening
Have had a few folks mention this variety, but not really sure why. We can get it, but I'm not really impressed with the disease package on Jet Star. Seems to be an old hybrid that doesn't have the vigor of the newer hybrids.
UPS has a feature called "surepost" where they use USPS. It is less costly than standard UPS, but is typically very slow. It usually takes a week or two for delivery. As a result, we don't use it.
Travis so sorry about your brassicas. Now you're ate up with rabbits, but squirrels are my nemesis. I know they're God's creation but I hate a squirrel. They did what the rabbits did to your broccoli and brussel sprouts. I've received my elephant garlic, sunsugar, big beef tomato, and the gypsy pepper. May go ahead and order the lemon boy and the purple boy.
@@gardeningwithhoss I definitely will. I'm growing Fall Corn for the first time and it has tasselled, set ears with silk. I've fed it with Chilean Nitrate, 20-20-20, and micro boost yet it seems to be slow growing. Could the cold snap have slowed the growth? Great show guys as always. I have the perfect solution for rabbits - a Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Bayou, that loves to eat the baby ones and even the bigger ones.
Heck yeah!
I’m planting 4 different types of tomatoes. What do you do to keep them from cross pollination. Small garden space dedicated to tomatoes.
I have never had Tomatoes cross pollinate it very rare. only way would be a bee going from one flower to the other.
@@gardeningwithhoss ok will do, and is there any treatment for rust, copper spray?
Liquid Copper (hosstools.com/product/liquid-copper-fungicide/)
Thats funny, I keep a headlamp and scatter gun at the back door too. The stray cats keep the small varmints to a minimum. I've got to replace the batteries in the headlamp before I run out of stray cats though. Cant hardly see what I'm killin 😂
I hate garden pests , I had a couple rows of green beans and they were starting to get blossoms on them, went out to the garden one morning and there was nothing left but stems sticking out of the ground, the culprit was a ground hog.
really frustrating when that happens
So, how long did the canary melon store for? I'm going to grow it this coming summer. Just curious if it keeps for a while.
Had some make it a month or two. They'd probably store longer if harvested in late summer or early fall. Ours were harvested in the middle of our hot months.
Future topic - pest infection controls for common issues plus rust treatment for fig trees. Thanks
Wrote this before y’all started talking about pest controls - thanks
Are you guys gonna add some pimento peppers??
I hope to have them. Was planning on adding them last year, but couldn't get the seeds.
Have either of you had any experience grafting tomato plants ?
We haven't ever grafted tomato plants. Seems like most of the people doing tomato grafting are doing it for greenhouse tomatoes. Since we don't grow tomatoes in our high-tunnel, I guess we've never had the need for grafting.
@@gardeningwithhoss may try a few this year with eggplant, just to what kind of results I get. Thanks
Let us know how it works for you!
I used Apple Pay to pay for my orders. I noticed on the new site that it is not an option. Would you consider bringing it back?
Yes, I will check on that.
I usually grow indeterminate but I want to give those Red Snappers a try
I can't find the red snapper tomatoes in stock
They'll be back within a month or so.
@@ronniehiggins1439 I left a restock request notification on email
Hi Travis, the Savoy King Cabbage, Collards, and Kale seeds all produced wonderful veggies. Our 1st harvest of Collards were fabulous, a real taste of home, thankyou! The kale was excellent, and the cabbage is a new favorite for fall plantings for our garden (zone 7a). Looking forward to ordering my irrigation kits.
Glad you liked them!
Talk about one that’s on the fence? Pun alert
Speaking of corn... I’ve been looking for a dwarf corn here in Cali in the city need to keep my crop under 6ft. HELP HELP
The supersweet varieties can tend to be a little shorter than the traditional varieties like Silver Queen. Might want to give one of those a shot.
Which of these tools would make weeding easier for an older lady? The Push Pull Hoe or the Stirrup Hoe?
You'll probably find the push pull hoe a little lighter and easier to use.
@@gardeningwithhoss Thank you. That's the one I was considering, but wasn't sure.
I can’t get thick skins on my sweet bell peppers. They’re kind of nasty tasting. How do I get them to thicker skins
Some varieties have thicker walls than others.
@@gardeningwithhoss but what’s good for thick walls for container gardening? I’ve tried eating them even as they start to turn red thinking... okay finally rip, but the taste is definitely not rip, bitter!
Try the King Arthur. It is known for having thick walls.
@@gardeningwithhoss thanks...
I smell rabbit on the menu for eating next Thursday!!
😂
You had 27 likes when I turned on your show, i hit the like and it stayed at 27. At least I get to watch your show. The youtube gods hate me. Thanks for another great show though.
Sorry the like button isn't working for you, but we certainly appreciate you watching!
Hold the phone on seed talk! What about seedless watermelon? Are you all gonna do them ? I remember trav talking about a pollinator plant and female plants but have you figured out anything about seeds for them?
Yes, we already have one variety on the site (Tailgate) and will be adding more in the next few months.
how do you control flea beetles
Horticultural Oil usually works pretty well if applied regularly.
Rabbits. That's the best reason for putting a "fish in the hole". Not under a plant but around the edge of the garden. It will bring in foxes. They will take care of the rabbits.
'Sounds like the Key family is fixin' to have rabbit stew for dinner....
Nothing wrong with some good rabbit stew!
Good video. These are caterpillars. Caterpillars suck. Bt is very effective for killing caterpillars. I can’t afford Bt, so I rely on trying to attract paper wasps, assassin bugs, yellow jackets, and other predators to control the caterpillars. Happy gardening
Do what you gotta do to save those greens!
I was almost getting excited with the tomatoes. I was hoping you was gonna carry jet star seeds 😑
I agree a DEFINITE must for me this year!
Have had a few folks mention this variety, but not really sure why. We can get it, but I'm not really impressed with the disease package on Jet Star. Seems to be an old hybrid that doesn't have the vigor of the newer hybrids.
@@gardeningwithhoss Living Traditions Homestead was promoting it as a go-to for production and overall quality(and we know Sarah don't lie..lol)
I'd put Bella Rosa or Red Snapper up against it any day without any doubts.
@@gardeningwithhoss I guess we going to have a "double dawg" shootout here in Texas this spring...lol
UPS sends some of their packages thru the USPS! What does that tell you. They over charge their costumers!
UPS has a feature called "surepost" where they use USPS. It is less costly than standard UPS, but is typically very slow. It usually takes a week or two for delivery. As a result, we don't use it.
I fight the horned tobacco worms every year. Big giant green beast will eat half a mater in one night
Just came in. 3 grinners met their end in the last 20 minutes. They were destroying my fruit and gardens.
Get 'em!
You’re shooting bunnies?? 😢😢😢
Rabbits, not bunnies.
Let us know how you like the Purple Boy and Lemon Boy if you grow them!
I'm in Jackson, MS zone 8b and we've even had 39 degree weather around the beginning of November.
Why can you not say gypsy?
That goes back to a show we did earlier this year, probably around late January or so.
