1:42 This painting reminds me of 19th century watercolours; it’s so romantic! I’ve wondered how the artists applied their paints and watching you paint is like looking through a window into the past. Thank you 🙂.

A lot of people say my painting style is like 'old nature illustrations' which is totally fine by me 😀 I guess I think in a similar way to people of that era??

We love how you captured this scenery! It's so easy to see why the Romantics connected with the severe beauty of landscapes like this, how it evokes the sense of ancient mystery. Thanks for including the oh-so-satisfying sound of the tape peeling off the edges!

Ooh, so WONDERFUL! I travelled many times to Scotland, and the colors, especially in Glencoe, always mesmerized me so much. Have you ever been to Iceland? The colors there are also breathtaking! I thought I wouldn't like it, because they have almost no trees. Just teeny tiny ones. Or maybe I should say some wee trees 😂But I loved it. But for living I would need trees. Deeply. Trees are my most loved plants.

On this absolutely dreary, dreary day we are having here, the view of sun drenched hills and sparkling waterfalls is indeed welcome! ❤
    Love the paintings!
I finally tried plein air ( when we still had decent weather conditions) and I wonder, if you have the same feeling - when you paint outside, it looks to me that even if the painting lacks in technical "department", it has more to it, than the same painting,of the same subject, made at home. Although, thinking logically, it should be the other way around, as you probably have more time,no wind and no glaring sunlight or rain on your page, when inside? 😮 strange...
Also, your brushes are my favourites now, it's a pure joy to use them! Thank you, I can see that you poured your soul into them! They are going to be cherished and looked after , and used a lot! 👍
    Happy painting!

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes I absolutely agree. I can NEVER replicate the freshness, immediacy, life, or energy of a plein air painting back in the studio. That's probably why I'm mostly painting outside nowadays. I still find studio work important for progressing ideas and technical skills but it feels less meaningful compared to my outdoor sketches.
Also I'm so happy to hear you are enjoying the brushes as much as I am!

Oh Glencoe! My husband and I were there in June as well! Although we only passed by briefly (we stayed one night in Loch Lomond and then drove from there to Inveraray, Oban, Glencoe, Bridge of Orchy and then back to Edinburgh. Lovely landscape! I'm sure it'll inspire you for a long time! Your painting is wonderful. Love the details on the mountain tops.
And glad you were able to take a breather after having such a shitty May. Looking forward to the next vid!

FYI, M. Graham Gouache and watercolours contains pure pigment in a gum arabic and honey binder. They use blackberry honey, which acts as a natural humectant. They say this keeps the paint semi-moist and allows the paint to be easily reconstituted.
I personally don’t use M. Graham in my Plein air or travel palettes because the paint is more liquidity and tends to leak out of them. I do love using it in my studio though. For my travel palettes I use Daniel Smith.
If anyone is allergic to bee stings, keep in mind that these insects are attracted to M. Graham paints because of the honey binder. It’s unlikely you’ll get swarmed but there might be one or two who will investigate.
Sarah, it’s always a joy to see you on adventures and watch you sketch and paint. Thank you for sharing!

I've been with you on your painting videos journey for about a year. It's wonderful seeing your skills improve while your style still shows through. I see the biggest growth at 3:50 with the waterfall and loved watching the progress to this stage. You have inspired me to try more gouache. It had never been my preference because I didn't think it could move as well as transparent watercolor, but you've shown me otherwise. I rejected gouache awhile ago because the opacity was dull and chalky. Changing to M. Graham gouache (white, alizarin crimson, azo and hansa yellow, and cobalt blue) was a game changer. With those colors, I can mix anything, including purples and oranges that are vibrant yet not neon. The paints rewet easily (of course, with honey) and thin to transparency. The ability to paint opaque details is so valuable. Thank you for bringing me into the world of gouache ... along with James Gurney ... so I can continue my love of transparent watercolor while allowing for the properties of gouache to enhance my work.

I know, when I came here I was like "this is paradise...why would anyone leave!?"
Now that I've lived here for a while, I can see why someone who grew up here might leave. 1. The weather; 2. People here think you can buy anything and everything in America much cheaper and more readily which is very appealing to most; 3. There's a sense of much more space and cheaper home prices in America...'land of the free where you can make a better life for yourself'...All of which is perpetuated by media/Hollywood

I’m planing a 67km (+ a summit hike(?)) hike in the mountains in aug-sep and would like to bring some watercolors with me. I haven’t tried plein air painting before but I’m really tempted to bring some supplies anyways (but there is still sometime until then to give it ago before I go on my longer trip).
